There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water. The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. Take healthy balanced diet...like boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. In general you should: • get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold • staying at home will keep you from spreading germs • drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Humidify the rooms you are in most or your whole house if possible. • Do steam inhalation once or twice daily Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

Disrupted sleep can make you obese

MD - Pharmacology, ECFMG certified , MBBS
General Physician, Navi Mumbai
Disrupted sleep can make you obese:

A bad night's sleep can affect our ability to perform daily chores, leading to excessive food intake in both kids and adults, researchers from University of Nebraska-Lincoln have found.

After a disrupted sleep, the hormone controlling appetite is affected, emotional stress is greater and more food is desired to compensate for lack of energy and impulsive behaviour.

All of these factors affect the amount of food that you will consume in a day.

Food intake is driven by biological, emotional, cognitive and environmental factors.

Disrupted sleep could lead to long-term chronic health damage in both adults and children.

It is important for people to be aware so that if they are suffering from lack of sleep, they can take greater care to consider the quality and quantity of food that they are consuming.

The paper was published in the Journal of Health Psychology.

How to Treat Acute Mastoiditis?

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Delhi
How to Treat Acute Mastoiditis?

The infection of the bone of the ear is Mastoiditis. This may be an acute infection needing hospitalisation and injectable drugs or may be in the form of slow bone eroding processes like cholesteatoma.

Let us learn more about this condition and its treatment

Understanding the mastoid bone: The mastoid bone is made up of air sacs and it looks a lot like a sponge. In this sense, it is different from the other bones that can be found in the human body. In order to function properly, this bone requires air from the other parts of the ear, including the Eustachain Tube which connects the middle part of the ear with the portion that lies at the back of the throat. If this tube gets infected due to any reason, the infection and bacteria can also travel to the Mastoid bone, leading to an infection in this area. Another form of the infection starts from the ear drum and a slowly progressive bone eroding process starts which spreads into the air sacs and can potentially spread to the brain.

Symptoms: Acute mastoiditis will present with earache, ear discharge and onset of fever and chills, as well as redness and inflammation behind the ear. Pain in the ear may be experienced along with headaches and swelling that may be experienced behind the eyes. At the very earliest sign, these symptoms must be reported to an ENT or ear throat nose specialist so that the treatment can happen at the earliest. Chronic mastoiditis may be due to repeated infections and bone eroding cholesteatoma which presents with repeated episodes of ear discharge which may be foul smelling and may even have blood.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis is mostly made on ear examination and may involve imaging tests like a CT scan as well as an MRI scan of the head and the ear. A simple X-ray of the mastoids can help in detecting the severity of the infection, and it spread.

Treatment: After diagnosing the problem with imaging tests as well as a detailed ear examination, the doctor will usually start the treatment by admitting the patient in the hospital. Antibiotic medication will be administered through intravenous methods, after which oral antibiotics will be prescribed for many days after the patient has been discharged from the hospital. Surgery may be required if the infection has not cleared up even after the use of antibiotics and is also done in cases of bone erosion. This surgery will be done to drain the infected fluid from the ear and remove a part of this Mastoid bone. Complications like facial paralysis and vertigo need to be discussed with the surgeon before the surgery.

Dear Sir/madam, Though am suffering from frequent urination so I got to know that KEGEL EXERCISES are good for controlling frequent urination. So kindly guide me how to do kegel exactly. Right now am doing KEGEL by controlling the frequency of urine while urinating

Dear Sir/madam,

To get started: find the right muscles. To identify your pelvic floor muscles, stop urination in midstream or tighten the muscles that keep you from passing gas. These maneuvers use your pelvic floor muscles. Once you've identified your pelvic floor muscles, you can do the exercises in any position, although you might find it easiest to do them lying down at first. Perfect your technique. Tighten your pelvic floor muscles, hold the contraction for three seconds, and then relax for three seconds. Try it a few times in a row. When your muscles get stronger, try doing kegel exercises while sitting, standing or walking. Maintain your focus. For best results, focus on tightening only your pelvic floor muscles. Be careful not to flex the muscles in your abdomen, thighs or buttocks. Avoid holding your breath. Instead, breathe freely during the exercises. Repeat 3 times a day. Aim for at least three sets of 10 repetitions a day. Don't make a habit of using kegel exercises to start and stop your urine stream. Some doctors think this could cause a bladder infection.

I am getting sweaty hand usually when I am excited nervous or in fear. It is a big prob I wasn't able to attempt my board maths exam fully because of this I have to rub my hand over a cloth. Please tell tell is this common. & its remedies. Thx.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

Actually you takes stress very eaily into your head and you are sensitive a well and this triggers the sweat glands to produce more sweat -during stres /fear/excitement your body tends to heat up and in reaction your brain attempts to cool your body through certain mechanisms. Specifically, the hypothalamus is the thermoregulation center of the body. This area of the brain activates the millions of sweat glands in the body to start producing sweat. Sweat is released from the glands and eventually evaporates to cool the body. Homoeopathic medicine r-32 drops (drreckeweg) drink 10 drops in 20 ml fresh water 3 time daily bramari pranayam daily for 10 times.

Pain is complex, so there are many treatment options medications, therapies, and mind-body techniques. There is evidence that certain dietary supplements and vitamins can help with certain types of pain. Fish oil is often used to reduce pain associated with swelling. Topical capsaicin, derived from chili peppers, may help with arthritis, diabetic nerve pain, and other conditions. There's evidence that glucosamine can help relieve moderate to severe pain from osteoarthritis in the knee. Do reply back for medications. Being also a general physician, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary tips taking into account patient preferences.

After getting an erection, my penis tilts to the left. I'm very worried about this. What is the solution for this?

MD - General Medicine

After getting an erection, my penis tilts to the left. I'm very worried about this. What is the solution for this?
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns t’s common for men’s erections to curve a little upward, downward, or to the left or right. Men’s penises also vary in terms of the direction that they point when they’re erect. With older age, men often experience a lower and lower point over time. Having a slight curve to your penis is unlikely to affect sexual intimacy or the kinds of sex that you have. Some men even use a slight curve to their advantage and may, for example, try to use the curve to stimulate a woman’s g-spot, an area along the front wall of the vagina.. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Green tea contains small amounts of caffeine, but it is also loaded with powerful antioxidants called catechins, which are also believed to work synergistically with the caffeine to enhance fat burning although the evidence is mixed, there are many studies showing that green tea (either as a beverage or a green tea extract supplement) can help you lose weight.
