I am on 10 mg escitalopram for severe anxiety and 150 mg pregabalin. The escitalopram has worked very well on my depression but not on my anxiety. Can the dose of escitalopram be increased to 20 mg? Will that decrease my anxiety or is that only for severe depression? Also if increased to 20 mg, what is the minimum amount of time I have to hold at that dose for?

You need to learn some behavioural techniques which will help you in managing your anxiety. You can talk to a counsellor who will help you with this. You are feeling better because of the medicines. So please consult your doctor before tapering it down or before stopping it. Talk to your doctor about starting therapy. Medication along with therapy will give you good results. And then after consulting your doctor and your counsellor you will be able to stop these medicines.

Depression is treatable and manageable. She will need active support of her family and friends to keep her hopes high of leading a satisfying and happier life than before. Cognitive behaviour therapy in counselling is a very important part of recovery from depression. Please motivate her to do exercise based on her age and ability. Encourage her to meet people and maintain social relationships. She should also engage in some meaningful and satisfying hobbies.

Hi, You would have not given much importance to your health during the anxiety and depression period and as a result your immunity also has decreased since you have not taken proper food, vegetables and fruits required to your body. Now start giving importance to your health firstly, drink as much water you can every day, take tender coconut, multigrains in some form or the other, fruits and vegetables also. Definitely you will become fit. Take care. Be healthy. With regards,

Did You Know Depression Is The Real Culprit Behind Your Bad Sex Life?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Did You Know Depression Is The Real Culprit Behind Your Bad Sex Life?

Depression is a very common disease and affects every aspect of your life including your libido. Depression and some anti depressants curb sexual drive. This has a negative effect on the depression as sex releases 'happy hormones'. Thus depression and your sex life share a cyclic relationship. The effect of depression on your sex life is a result of both brain functioning and physical changes in the body. Women are more likely to suffer from a reduced libido as an effect of depression.

When it comes to depression and your sex life, there is no universal form of treatment. However, it is important not to stop treatment for depression in fear of a lowered libido. The sexual side effects can be addressed later.

Here are a few things you can do to improve your sex life:

Ask your doctor to adjust medication
In cases where the antidepressant curbs libido, lowering or adjusting the drug dosage can be a solution to treat the depression without curbing sexual desire. Do not attempt to adjust your medication on your own. Your doctor may also change the drug to another that does not affect your sex drive. You could also try adjusting the schedule of drug intake such that you medicate yourself after sex. Alternatively, you could ask your doctor to prescribe medication such as Viagra to boost your libido.
If your curbed libido is an effect of the depression itself, anti depressants may help you enjoy sex more. You should know that anti depressants can take a few months to have an effect.

Break the pattern
Depression often makes a person withdraw from others and cease to enjoy any experience. This becomes a thought pattern that cannot be cured with medication. Talking to a counselor can help unlearn these thought patterns and help people form new social bonds. As part of the treatment, the patient will need to find and explore new ways of enjoying sex that can strengthen strained relationships.

Talk to your partner
Having an open conversation with your partner is key to improving relationships and one's sex life. Talk about your sexual needs and help your partner understand your mental barriers to sex. Find forms of foreplay that appeal to both of you. It is also important for you and your partner to understand that there is no 'standard' to how often you should have sex or how you should feel after it.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Dear, anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Please post a private question with all the details and I shall help you with those tips and tricks. Take care.

Dear , anxiety and related symptoms are body's defense mechanism against stress and fear and therefore you cannot fully eliminate it. When the symptoms become more frequent and prominent, it is called anxiety disorder. It is a disorder and not a disease. Understanding anxiety helps you manage it properly. Education, awareness, cbt, ret etc are the therapeutical areas with which anxiety disorder is managed effectively. Please post a detailed private question to me and I am sure I will be able to help and cure your problem. Take care.
