When to Go for Root Canal

MDS, BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
When to Go for Root Canal

Not every tooth infection requires a root canal and hence it is essential to know the indication of a root canal. But exactly a root canal procedure is and why is it required?

A root canal means that the pulp or soft tissue inside a tooth has been damaged by bacterial infection. A root canal involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning the infection and filling in the emptied space.

So, how do you know that you need a root canal. Here are some telltale signs:

  • Gum tenderness: Swelling that indicates the need of root canal treatment can range from being slightly red and inflamed to pronounced lumps on the gums. In some extreme cases, this swelling may extend out of the gums into the face and neck region. Sometimes, a pus filled boil with a pimple like head may also form on the gums. If this head bursts, the patient may notice a foul taste in the mouth. This swelling can come and go as the tooth decay deteriorates and may or may not be accompanied by pain. Teeth may also feel like they have been pushed out of their sockets and are taller than usual.
  • Pain: Discomfort ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain can be a sign that you need root canal treatment. This type of pain is usually characterized by throbbing and may change as you switch positions. It is usually triggered by chewing, applying pressure on the tooth or eating something cold or hot. In some cases, the patient may not be able to indicate the exact tooth that is hurting but can only identify the painful area.
  • Exposure of the dental nerves: At times during regular dental work, the nerves in the tooth may be exposed. This indicates an exposure of pulp tissue and can trigger pulp degeneration if left untreated. However, all of the above symptoms can be symptoms of other types of dental problems as well and do not necessarily individually indicate the need for a root canal. Only a dentist can properly diagnose a need for root canal treatment after a physical examination and testing.
  • Tooth discolouration: Discolouring of teeth can be a sign of internal tooth damage. This is especially noted if the teeth take on a dark yellow, grey or blackish tint. Tooth discolouration is fairly common in cases where the tooth has undergone trauma such as an accident etc.

I am 65 years and have healthy teeth but 5 months back I had one wisdom tooth extracted from lower jaw. There after I am feeling sensation in two front teeth of same jaw while yawning or wide opening of mouth. For the last two months I have seen discoloration in one of the affected tooth. The job was done from highly qualified Doctor in Chandigarh. Please let me know what could be the reason and remedy .My doctor says rct will be done. But why, it is healthy teeth with no cavity in its neighbour hood or in teeth away from this. Charges wise my doctor:---if a qualified BDS charges INR200/ he will do the same job for INR1000/ but still I wanted professional work. Please Reply.

There might be a problem in the TMJ (MOUTH OPENING JOINT) BUT THE SENSATION IS ONLY DURING YAWNING OR WIDE OPENING, OTHERWISE THERE IS NO SENSATION, ALSO THE DISCOLORATION IS LIKE WHAT? ONLY A PORTION IS DISCOLORED OR THE WHOLE TOOTH HAS TURNED GRAYISH OR BROWNISH. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR DENTIST AND TRUST HIM/HER. THE BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTION CAN BE PROVIDED BY YOUR DENTIST ONLY BECAUSE HE/SHE HAS EXAMINED YOU PERSONALLY, WE CAN MERELY GUESS BY THE INFORMATION YOU PROVIDED.

I have a long tooth, misplaced, is filing possible in a short time? If Yes, the cost can assess how much?

The procedure you want would be undertaken depending on the placement of the tooth. Because unnecessary grinding of tooth can lead to sensitivity. Please visit a dentist and get a radiograph done.

Eat lot of fruits & green leafy vegetables & drink plenty of water. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need Coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges)

Get your teeth x-rayed to determine the cause. Normally pain is due to decay or abrasion of teeth leading to exposure of nerve endings. Rct n cap will solve your problem. Other causes can be teeth sensitivity. Start using desensitizing toothpaste like sensodyne twice daily for brushing. Apply it with finger on teeth n leave for 2 minutes then brush normally. The result will be seen within a month.

5 Reasons That Cause Plaque

MDS(Prosthodontist), BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
5 Reasons That Cause Plaque

Plaque is a film that forms over the teeth. This film is sticky in nature and it is also colorless. It is formed due the presence of bacteria and materials secreted by the bacteria. Plaque has the potential to damage the enamel of the tooth. If plaque is not treated within a reasonable amount of time, then it becomes hard in texture and causes even more damage.

Reasons that cause plaque:

1. Failure to brush every day: This is the chief reason behind the formation of plaque. Teeth must be brushed twice every day in order to keep them clean and healthy. If food particles remain stuck in the groves of the teeth, they can lead to many problems, like cavities and plaque. Each area of the teeth should be cleaned with a suitable toothbrush. The insides of the teeth should not be neglected.

2. Failure to floss every day: Flossing is unfortunately not so common in India. Brushing helps to keep the teeth clean overall but it does not reach some of the spaces between the teeth. Flossing is therefore required to make sure that the plaque on the gum line and other problematic areas are removed.

3. Excessive consumption of sweet and sugary food: Foods like cakes, muffins, sweetmeats, cold drinks, ice creams etc contain carbohydrates which the bacteria tend to feed on. In the process of creating the film of plaque, they turn the sugar into acid, which causes damage to the tooth. Such foods should, therefore, be avoided as they cause plaque.

4. Avoiding natural foods that improve teeth: There are many natural foods which keep teeth healthy. Failing to include such foods in one's diet could lead to the formation of plaque. Fruits and vegetables like guava or carrots can serve this purpose.

5. Failing to visit the dentist regularly: Since dentists are experts when it comes to taking care of death, everyone should make sure to get dental checkups regularly. Even if one flosses and brushes regularly, plaque may still form. A dentist should be consulted regularly to check if any such formation has occurred. Failure to this may cause the formation of even more plaque and more damage.

Brushing daily with tooth paste which contains flouride helps in preventing tooth decay and helps in hardening of the tooth enamel.
