"For Sinus and Nose problems, try taking steam inhalation for 3 times a day. To know how to take steam, please read instructions below to know - how to take steam inhalation for best results. If problem is not solved in 2-3 days, you may need additional medicines. Techniques to steam 1) Boil a pot of water. 2) Pour water into a large flat pan or bowl. If you use a casserole, water will remain warm for longer duration. 3) Place your head over the bowl at a distance of 1 feet. 4) Cover your head and bowl with a large towel (like a tent), take long breath through your nose and breath out through mouth. Take a break every 1-2 minutes until you feel relatively cooler. Do it for 10 minute twice or thrice a day. If you feel that the treatment is getting too much for you, raise the towel so that fresh air is brought into the area and breathe through your mouth a couple of times and then resume Take care - Take all precautions while dealing with hot water. Also, keep children away and wan others that you are dealing with boiling hot water. Other way is - by an Electric steamer available in market and take steam through it. It is more convenient. "

Sinusitis: Controlling it without Surgery

MD - General Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Sinusitis: Controlling it without Surgery

The inflammation of the cavities around nasal passage is known as sinusitis. When the cavities are full of fluid, germs attach themselves to the fluids, which give rise to infections. Some of the causes of sinusitis are common colds, allergic rhinitis problem, nasal polyps and deviated septum. You can also learn about common ear infections.

There are 4 different types of sinusitis:

  1. Acute sinusitis: It remains for about 4 weeks or less. It is usually characterized by a runny nose and pain in the face which will stay for at least 10 to 14 days.
  2. Sub acute sinusitis: It is almost like the acute sinusitis but stays longer for about 4 to 8 weeks.
  3. Chronic sinusitis: The inflammation in this case lasts about 8 weeks, sometimes longer than that.
  4. Recurrent sinusitis: In this, the sinusitis attack keeps occurring all through the year.

At times, to clear up the blocked sinuses, a surgery is mandatory. This can be painful hence many are hesitant to go through with a surgery. If you want to control sinusitis so that it doesn't reach the limit where you have to go through a surgery, here are some tips of what you might be able to do regularly to clear your chances of controlling this:

  1. Take steam: This is the most common and easy way to control sinusitis. The steam helps to break down the excess mucus in the nasal passage and also reduces the inflammation of the sinuses. All you need is water. Heat it up to the required temperature and then inhale the steam. You will get a lot of relief if you do this regularly.
  2. Nasal Irrigation: This is basically the process of flushing the infected and stale mucus out of the nasal cavity. Take a liter of sterile water, mix one tablespoon of kosher salt and baking soda each. Then with the help of a syringe or a neti pot, wash your nostrils with the solution. The mucus will start coming out and your nasal cavity will clear out.
  3. Use warm washcloth: Lie down and place a warm washcloth (a washcloth dipped in warm water and wringed) on your forehead and nose region. The warmth from the washcloth will break down the mucus and clear the congestion.

Deviated nasal septum ( nasal bone ) will require septal correction surgery , if it is cusing persistent nasal block. Asymptomatic deviated nasal septum, mostly , does not need surgery.

I was suffering from nasal block and loss of smell, On the basis of CT report of my Nose, ENT surgeon told that many polyps are present and suggested for major surgery and if not done immediately it may lead to many problems. My query is will I become more sensitive and cam I lead normal life if I undergo this surgery. Please suggest.

MS - ENT , MBBS
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
Hi lybrate-user. In case you are having polyps you require endoscopic sinus surgery because nasal blockage causes decrease oxygen supply at night and you will not feel fresh in morning. It will also hamper your daily activity. But one thing you need to remember is that this surgery is meant to open your sinuses and you require to be on followup with your doctor so that this problem can be controlled in future as well. Vertigo chakkar aane aur santulan khone ke anubhuti ko kahte hain. Iska mukhya kaaran aantrik kaan men sthit vestibular granthi mein kriyadosh hota hai. Is granthi mein 3 ardhchandraakaar naliyan hotee hain jinme taral padarth bharaa hota hai. Gardan ghumaane se yaa jhukaane se is taral padaarth ke stur mein parivartan hotaa hai jisase humein apnee sthiti kaa gyaan hota hai aur hum apna santulan banaaye rakh sakte hain. Kabhi kabhi is taral padaarth mein jo calcium ke chhote chhote kann hote hain we mukhya granthi ko chhodkar naliyon mein chale jaate hain jisase gardan ghumaane yaa jhukaane se khaaskar sokar uthate ya baithkar khadey hote samay achaanak sab ghoomtaa hua anubhav hota hai aur gir padenge aesaa lagta hai. Isko theek karne ke liye gardan kaa ek vishisht vyayaam karnaa hotaa hai tatha kuchh dawaaiyaan bhi leni hotee hain.
