TMJ Symptoms, Treatment, and Causes

The human jaw is a very important part of human anatomy and within it, the mandible or the lower jaw is very important as it is the movable part which helps you chew and enables you to open or close the mouth. The lower jaw is connected to the skull via the TMJ or the Temporo-mandibular joint. It works like a hinge which slides as and when required to allow movement of the jaw. TMJ disorder can be quite painful and limit you from normal activities and cause disruptions in your daily life.

Causes of TMJ-

The TMJ works as a movable joint where the bone area in contact with each other is covered by cartilage and a small shock absorbing soft disk separates the two cartilages. The disk enables the movements to be smooth. Any changes in this arrangement will usually result in pain. The primary causes for TMJ disorders could be summed up as follows –

  1. Misalignment – If the TMJ moves out of alignment due to underlying factors, it will cause pain and the inability to move the joint.

  2. Erosion of the cartilage or the disk – If the cartilage or the disk separating them erodes, then TMJ disorders might occur.

  3. ArthritisJust as arthritis affects knees, wrists, elbows and finger joints, it could cause TMJ disorders as well.

  4. Impact – One of the most common causes of TMJ disorders, this may occur due to injuries sustained from forceful impacts.

Symptoms-

  1. Pain or tenderness around the jaws.

  2. You may experience pain on either or both sides of the temporo-mandibular joint.

  3. Even if you don’t have pain in the specific joint, you may have an aching facial pain.

  4. The most common and typical symptom of TMJ is of pain while chewing. Your pain may progressively get worse over time if you have a deteriorating condition.

  5. Pain in and around the ears may also be a symptom of TMJ disorders.

  6. Difficulty in opening or closing your jaw either due to stiffness, pain or both.

Treatment-

Treatments vary between various methods and approaches and the severity of the pain or condition and the underlying causes. Some of the options are:

  1. Oral Medications – Pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti–inflammatory medications are usually prescribed to reduce pain while the jaw may be healing or for underlying causes that may result in pain.

  2. Physical Therapies – This is another common method wherein the doctors may use a device to keep the jaw stiff or stop them from moving in a particular way in which it causes pain. Mouth guards or oral splints are such devices. Dislocation may have to be corrected by physical pressure and setting the bone back into the joint as well.

  3. SurgeryIn certain cases, surgery may also be required to correct chronic pain, especially wherein the underlying condition may keep causing problems. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dentist.

Swelling over feet is common during pregnancy specially if you sit for long time with hanging feet. Since your bp is normal get urine test done for protiens. If that is also normal, need not worry but keep your bp checked quite regularly. If your job demands prolonged sitting keep some elevated foot rest under your feet and walk in between.

6 Ways To Treat Heavy Bleeding During Menses!

6 Ways To Treat Heavy Bleeding During Menses!

Menstruation is the monthly discharge of blood from the vagina, which lasts for about 5 to 6 days. It is the shedding of the inner lining of the uterus, when pregnancy does not occur after the release of egg from the ovary. Menstrual periods are generally often accompanied by painful cramps in the lower abdomen, heavy bleeding, weakness, water retention, irritability and malaise.

What is Menorrhagia?

Very heavy or prolonged periods are medically termed as menorrhagia. It is abnormally heavy bleeding if there is a requirement to change sanitary napkins or tampons several times within a very short span of time. Passing large blood clots, night time bleeding, bleeding for over 7 -8 days, are other symptoms that one might be suffering from menorrhagia.

Common Causes Behind It

  1. Heavy menstrual bleeding can be a result of hormonal imbalance.

  2. Fibroids, cysts or polyps in the organs of the reproductive system, which includes the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes.

  3. History of miscarriage or failed pregnancies.

  4. Use of Intrauterine contraceptive devices can sometimes lead to heavy and prolonged bleeding during periods.

  5. Infections of uterine lining can also lead to heavy and abnormal bleeding.

How can you treat heavy bleeding during menses

  1. Change of dietYou must include more minerals, iron, magnesium and calcium in your diet. Your diet must comprise a lot of green vegetables, fresh fruits and dairy products.

  2. Some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen may be prescribed to reduce the blood loss.

  3. Certain hormonal therapies to regulate the hormonal imbalances and menstrual irregularities.

  4. Home remedies such as intake of certain herbs, ginger and coriander seeds help to control heavy bleeding.

  5. Increasing magnesium intake to balance out levels of oestrogen.

  6. It is best to stick to natural remedies, as it generally does not create complications in other bodily functions.

How you can treat Menorrhagia:

Menorrhagia can be managed with natural remedies as mentioned here but sometimes, the bleeding may not respond to such modifications & then you need to consult a Gynaecologist to find the exact cause and treatment for the heavy bleeding. Usually, the first line medication is a NSAID, which is a non-hormonal medication and needs to be taken during periods only. Other medications that may be used are hormonal tablets and other options which are best decided by a Gynaecologist.

If the bleeding cannot be controlled even after a change of diet and home remedies, you must consult the gynaecologist as soon as possible. Heavy bleeding is a serious problem, especially if accompanied by dizziness, fluctuations in the blood pressure, nausea and weight loss. Severe cramps and constant bleeding can hinder daily routine, therefore, the earlier you receive medical attention, the quicker you will get relief.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Morning Sickness -

Morning Sickness -

5 bizarre sex accidents that has happened to real people

5 bizarre sex accidents that have happened to real people

These sex accidents have actually happened to real people.

Sex is supposed to be fun, exciting and even relaxing, but sometimes, things might not go as planned.

Things can go wrong when people try to experiment or take risks without being sensible about it. Below are 5 sex accidents that have actually happened to real people.

Vaginal cuts - Small tears or cuts in the vagina are the most common sex accident and it is the direct result of rough sex, without proper lubrication.

Broken penis - Although there aren't actually any bones in the penis, it can still be broken. The condition is known as penile fracture and it occurs when the erect penis sustains the extreme force. A cracking or popping sound, immediate loss of erection, swelling, bruising and deep pain are the most common symptoms of a penile fracture. As embarrassing as it might be for some men, the solution is to rush to the hospital, waiting can result in deep scarring that can alter the shape of the penis and is much harder to treat.

Wrong lubricant - There is only one thing that should ever be used as lubricant during sex - that is a lubricant. Using other substances such as Vaseline, baby oil, cooking oil or toothpaste can result in serious rushes, genital infection for both partners and even poisoning. Check the labels of over-the-counter lubricant as you should also avoid ingredients

Blocked rectum - Far from being an urban myth, this is a highly common and equally embarrassing sex accident. During sexual experimentation, people have inserted all sorts of objects, including candles in their rectum. Depending on the softness of the object, it might be possible for doctors to remove it without causing too much damage. But in extreme cases, it can cause rupture of the anus area.

Blocked vagina - Another point of entry for sexual creativity and experimentation is the vagina. Cell phones, cans, and bottles have been recovered from women's vaginas in various hospitals around the globe.
