M 25 years old and my tongue is infection like sore and thrush. How to cure from this infection. Please tell me medicine.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Oral thrush is a fungal infection which occurs due to dry mouth, uncontrolled diabetes and weak immune system with debilitating disease or patient on corticosteroids. You may need fluconazole & renal safety dosage of amphotericin b (iv drugs to be used only with the advice of oral & maxillofacial surgeons). Kindly consult an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need candid ointment until then. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash. Advance procedures can be done with laser.

Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

DNB (ENT), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Bangalore
Salivary Gland Disorder - Common Causes Behind it

Remember the sensation similar to that of a warm liquid flooding your tongue when you smell a deliciously baked chocolate cake? Or a freshly baked brown bread early in the morning? That is your saliva. The salivary glands present in the inner linings of the lips, cheeks and the mouth produce saliva. Saliva protects one from tooth decay, keeps the mouth moist and helps in the digestive process. Any disease that affects the saliva gland comes under the domain of ‘salivary gland disorders’.

Causes

There are three salivary glands in humans known as the Submandibular, Parotid and the Sublingual gland. The most common disorder that affects salivary glands is that of ‘blocked salivary glands’. Sialothiasis is a disorder wherein, calcium stones are formed in the salivary glands, which obstruct these glands. Obstruction of the salivary glands leads to an infection called sialadenitis, caused by strep or staph bacteria.

Sjogren’s syndrome is another condition which affects the salivary glands. In this condition, the antibodies in the body target the cells that produce saliva. This occurs mostly in women who suffer from autoimmune disorders. Viral infections are also common; flu virus and mumps are a few examples.

Symptoms

The symptoms of salivary gland disorders are problem specific; for Sialolithiasis, you will feel a painful lump below the tongue, which tends to aggravate when you eat. In case of Sialadenitis, there will be an odorous pus-filled discharge along with a lump beneath the chin. For viral infections, the symptoms will include muscle pain, swelling and fever. Symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome are dry eyes and mouth, joint pain, fatigue and tooth decay.

Treatment

Like the symptoms, the treatments for salivary gland disorders are also problem specific. For salivary gland tumors, surgery is required. If it is a malignant tumor, then radiation therapy will be prescribed which may cause dry mouth syndrome (Xerostomia). For bacterial and viral infections, anti-bacterial and anti-viral medications are required for treatment, respectively. It is also important that you take good care of your oral health for an even more effective treatment. Brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis will help keep salivary gland disorders at bay. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I am 50 year old. I have pain in my tooth after 3rd sitting. My doctor is bot available. Which drug I should take?

MDS Prosthodontics, MDS Endodontist
Dentist, Ahmedabad
Take any pain killer, all works well in tooth ache. But this pain killer will subside your pain only. But you need to visit your dentist to remove cause of pain. If you have no other disease or allergy than you can take tab combiflam which will last for 6-8 hours.

Use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! Brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - Floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - Control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - Rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - Stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - Eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - Try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a "water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - You may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

My teeth is very very much yellow it looks very very bad to me while speaking which toothpaste or toothpowder I have to use for this for sparkling teeth always creamy layer formed on teeth is their method for doing permanent white someone told me use colgate visible white toothpaste someone told me gargle with hydrogen peroxide soln is it right or I suffer from any side effects while using.

BDS, MDS Prosthodontics
Dentist, Chennai
Unfortunately there is no "permanent" way to make teeth white. However these are some of the options You can try. 1. Scaling and polishing (teeth cleaning). This will not change the color of your teeth but will remove all hard debris on your teeth and will also help if you have bad breath. 2. Bleaching. This is a temporary non invasive, cost effective way to brighten your teeth. Results will last anywhere from 3 months to 6 months. 3. Finally Veneers. This option is very expensive, invasive and time consuming. However the results are permanant. You can choose the final color of your teeth. 4. Commercial you available tooth pages will not give you any significant visual results. Hope this helps.

My right incisor has broken slightly before 10 years. Whether I have to go for capping or any cement like filling is there. How much will it cost?

MDS - Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
Broken tooth can be restored using a composite filling or a crown (Metal ceramic, All ceramic or Zirconia) depending on the amount of tooth loss after fracture. But first, the dentist would clinically evaluate the condition of your teeth by looking if any colour changes are seen compared to the adjacent teeth (Discoloraion), take radiographs (x-ray) to evaluate the condition of the root and its surrounding structures, any pain while tapping on the tooth, exposure of the pulp, etc. If any pathology is seen in the radiograph, might even require a Root canal treatment before restoring the broken part. All these will be analysed and an appropriate treatment plan along with alternative options based on your requirement will be given by the dentist. I hope that I have clarified your query. Thank you.
