How to Balance Your Work and Health During Pregnancy?

How to Balance Your Work and Health During Pregnancy?

At times, being pregnant may make you feel as if it is a full-time job. This causes even more problems when you actually have a full-time job, especially jobs that require you to be seated at a desk or to be pleasant with your clients even when you don’t feel like. But thankfully, there are tips on how you can handle the major issues that you may face at your workplace during your pregnancy.

When to make the announcement?
Though it is quite natural to feel tempted to spill the good news right away, advises that it is good to keep the news to yourself until you have crossed the first trimester. This is because the chance of miscarriage drop dramatically and when you finally decide to announce the news, make sure that your boss gets to know it right from you rather than any of your colleagues.

How to manage the common symptoms while on the job?
Though pregnancy causes a variety of discomforts, it doesn’t give you a ticket for slacking off at work. There are various ways of dealing with the symptoms in order to prevent them from interfering with your work. If you suffer from morning sickness (85% of women suffer from nausea during pregnancy), you can get over it by eating your favourite food. You can take in small doses of healthy snacks for keeping your blood-sugar levels within the required limit and reduce the nausea. When your symptoms are severe, you will have to consult an expert about proper medications.

When to get ready for maternity leave?
Before you decide to bid a temporary farewell to your workplace, you will have to specify the details of your leave. You should let your boss know about an approximate date from when you will be taking leave and when you will be able to rejoin. By giving them a tentative date of your return, you are allowing them to see the light at the end of that tunnel. You can help by making a small list of tasks that you were responsible for and also offer suggestions on how they can be divided and handled by your coworkers.

Though most women are into professions which will not affect the delivery of the child, there are certain kinds of jobs that may put you as well as your baby’s health at risk. It is important to consult your doctor and ask for a detailed advice on this matter.

Types, Causes and Symptoms of Female Hypogonadism

MBBS
Sexologist, Jaipur
Types, Causes and Symptoms of Female Hypogonadism

Hypogonadism in females occurs when your sex glands produce little or no sex hormones. The sex glands, also called gonads that are responsible for ovary formation in females, breast enlargement and in menstrual cycle.

What Are the Types of Female Hypogonadism?
There two types of hypogonadism are primary and central hypogonadism.

Primary Hypogonadism: Primary hypogonadism means that you don't have enough sex hormones in your body due to a problem in your gonads. Your gonads are still receiving the message to produce hormones from your brain, but they aren't able to produce them.

Central Hypogonadism or Secondary Hypogonadism: In central hypogonadism, the problem lies in your brain. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland in your brain, which control your gonads, aren't working properly.

Causes of Primary Hypogonadism:

  1. Autoimmune disorders, such as Addison's disease and hypoparathyroidism
  2. Genetic disorders, such as Turner syndrome and Klinefelter syndrome
  3. Severe infections
  4. Liver and kidney diseases
  5. Hemochromatosis, which happens when your body absorbs too much iron
  6. Radiation exposure
  7. Surgery of your sex organs

Causes of Central or Secondary Hypogonadism include:

  1. Genetic disorders, such as Kallmann syndrome (abnormal hypothalamic development)
  2. Infections, including HIV and AIDS
  3. Pituitary disorders
  4. Inflammatory diseases including sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and histiocytosis
  5. Obesity
  6. Rapid weight loss
  7. Nutritional deficiencies
  8. Use of steroids or opiates (especially long-term usage)
  9. Brain surgery
  10. Radiation exposure
  11. Injury to your pituitary gland or hypothalamus
  12. A tumor in or near your pituitary gland

Symptoms that May Affect Females Include:

  1. Lack of menstruation
  2. Slow or absent breast growth
  3. Hot flashes
  4. Loss of body hair
  5. Low or absent sex drive
  6. Milky discharge from your breasts

Treatment for Hypogonadism in Women: Your treatment will involve increasing the amount of female sex hormones in your body. Your first line of treatment will probably be estrogen therapy if you've had a hysterectomy. Either a patch or pill can administer the supplemental estrogen hormone. Estrogen must be balanced with progesterone, because taking estrogen alone leads to a dangerous build up of the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia) that can lead to cancer of the uterus. Low-dose testosterone may be added for women with hypogonadism who have a low sex drive. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

My wife was suffering from jaundice hepatitis B before 1 month. So can I have intercourse with her? If not now when can I have. Please advice me. She is recovered from it now.

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
Hepatitis b is a sexually transmitted disease. So even one encounter can transmit disease. If the blood report is definitely negative, then only proceed with intimate night. If not, then wait for the report. Of course you can use condom which provides complete safety and protection from disease. Use best quality condoms. And avoid scratches of the skin which may ooze blood. The blood can also transmit disease.
