Pre-marital Counselling - Why is it Necessary?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Pre-marital Counselling - Why is it Necessary?

Marriage is a life-long commitment. Premarital Counseling is a therapy that serves to help couples prepare for their wedlock. It aids in ensuring that you and your partner forge a healthy and a strong relationship in the long run making way for a successful, happy and a satisfying marriage. It also helps you in spotting out the weaknesses early that can later magnify into troubles muddling up your conjugal life. The sessions are usually conducted by licensed and qualified therapists when a couple is considering marriage or are about to get into marriage.

Why is pre-marital counseling at all necessary?

  1. Matching all Aspects: Through this sort of counseling, couples are motivated to initiate conversation pertaining to marriage such as anger management, devoting time for each other, decision-making, family relationships, parenting and children, sex and affection, marital roles, ethics and beliefs, communication and finances.

  2. Communication and Conflict Resolution: Pre-marital Counseling helps partners in improving their ability to communicate with each other, setting sensible marriage goals, as well as skillfully resolving conflicts. In addition to these, premarital counseling also seeks to create a positive attitude for your conjugal life.

  3. Acclimatizing: Remember that you carry your own history, opinions, and values in a relationship and they might vary with your partner who has had an entirely different life with their own and unique experiences. Adjusting to each other as different human beings can be quite a task in itself. Marriage counseling helps in acclimatizing, accepting to the bad and good parts of both the partners.

  4. Becoming a support for each other: Most people rush into marriage to gratify their financial, social, emotional, and sexual needs, but such a mind set is always a gamble. You may hit it off greatly with you partner and then have troubles later on. Clearing out your expectations and bridging the differences prior to marriage would enhance your understanding of each other. This way you can become a source of great support for each other.

  5. Break the pattern: Both or one of you might belong to a divorced or a dysfunctional family where manipulation and fighting was the norm. Premarital Counseling can actually help you to come out of your fear and make peace with your past so that the mistakes of your parents aren’t repeated in your life.

  6. Averting divorce: Owing to the modern lifestyle, the chances of divorce are rising with each passing day. Therefore, early intervention is indeed the need of the hour. Premarital counseling can help you pinpoint areas of major concern and work to resolve them or work around them to avoid issues which may balloon and end up in a worst case scenario for a marriage, which is divorce.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a specilized psychologist and ask a free question.

I was suffering from depression from last 6-7 years and I consulted a psychologist and he gave me some medicine and I think now I am 99% fine. But still there are negative thoughts and I can't come out from over thinking. What should I do.

You were in a chronic state of depression and its other effects but you have picked up the pieces and started afresh really well. My advice is for to seek counseling in tandem with the medication. It is grossly inadequate to rely on medication alone. Counseling will teach you a lot of coping skills and techniques to manage the daily challenges of life. This is a passive way to hope for recovery. You must be active and work towards your reformation. Many lifestyle changes need to be made to progress away from the condition. Then, if you go episode-free for three years under the combination of medicine and therapy, you could initiate weaning off of the medication gradually and under strict monitoring of the psychiatrist. I know that this may sound discouraging but if you had contacted me 7 years ago I would have told you at that time to combine the two therapies. But it is never too late, and now you have a clear agenda and time plan to resolve the depression. In the meantime please do the following: When you are depressed, you will feel lazy though I would like to call it lethargy. There is an inertia and lack of energy to even think, let alone act. You are required to literally do the opposite of what you feel like doing. Depression makes you want to withdraw, lie down, sleep, become lethargic, slow down, make you too lazy to even think etc. So when I suggested doing the opposite, you will need to fight this disease. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, eat more of proteins and vegetables, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. I hope you can find someone to love and be loved too. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three things, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Be prayerful too and trust that God will intervene too. You have been handicapped by this disease and your belief system due to this disease. Now go out there and win your battle: nothing is too late in life.

Both habits are addictive and that will present other problems. Masturbation is not really bad; it is the addiction to it that is bad. Not even the number of years is a problem but the frequency and compulsiveness to do it is to be considered for its ill-effects. At your age you may feel it difficult and it can become addictive if you have alone time, if you obsess about it, and if you are not into relationships. The problem with addiction to this is that you may go on to prefer masturbation to heterosexual contact, even when you are married. That obviously would be an insult to your wife and will lead to a lot of conflict. Heterosexual contact is very wholesome and the physiology is made exactly for penile and vaginal contact. You will instead enjoy a poor replica of this and not know or care for the difference. The second thing that can happen with addiction is that it will become compulsive and will have no boundaries or limits, since it can be done all by yourself, whenever, wherever, and however too. The big problem a lot of children get into is the guilt around this. A useful way to discharge the energy is to get into contact games, or exercises, or even hobbies to channelize it. Also you should not spend too much time alone, and you need to keep your mind occupied with other interesting things and a lot of socializing. Even if you are not interested in marriage, for whatever reasons, it will help you to get into a friendship with a girl and enjoy the relationship where there will be a lot of excitement when you fall in love. Right now your hormones may be very active and your physiological apparatus is primed and ready for sexual stimulation. But because of your age and even otherwise it is important to develop good control and not feed into your impulses. Keeping yourself occupied and living a healthy social life are the keys to manage your sexual drives.

Beans play a vital role in lowering cholesterol:
They really are good for your heart. Researchers at Arizona State University Polytechnic found that adding ½ cup of beans to soup lowers total cholesterol, including LDL, by up to 8%. The key to this heart-healthy food is its abundance of fiber, which has been shown to slow the rate and amount of absorption of cholesterol in certain foods and binding the excess cholesterol from diet and excreting it. All the whole lentils like Bengal gram, green gram, black, kidney, or pinto beans; each supplies about one-third of your daily fiber needs.

Backache Health Tip

A three-step plan to relieve pain

1. Always do stretches and back strengthening exercises in the morning before the day's activities tire the back and at night to relax the muscles after a long day!

2. Use a cushion/or a back support when you sit on a chair. Use an ergonomic chair to sit at your desk. Take breaks every hour and walk around even to drink water or for making a cup of green tea! be mobile, but not on the mobile!

3. De-stress. Wellness encompasses mind and body relaxation. So meditate and breathe right. Eat healthy. Sleep well.

Dear user, this could be hereditary but it does not mean you can not control the acne. Use sebamed body wash daily and apply sebamed lotion after that. To control acne internally, have lots of vitamin c in your daily intake, avoid junk food and soda.

lybrate-user, these reports only give an indication to the size of the red blood cells. They do not indicate the confirmation of any disease. The most likely reason of your dry hands is dehydration. This is not directly linked to your high BP, but surely intensified by it. Please begin to drink plenty of water through out the day. Make sure you are not ating packaged, fried, oily, spicy foods that will cause dehydration also. Try to apply simple sesame oil (til ka tel) on your hands 2 to 3 times a day after washing them, to reduce the irritation of dryness. Consume lots of fresh fruit and fresh vegetables in your diet. When there is low vitamin, hands and body can tend to feel dry an uncomfortable. Wish you a happy Diwali.
