Hypertension - All You Need to Know

High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition where the long term force induced by blood on the artery walls may lead to health complications. In some cases high blood pressure can be a chronic condition without any visible symptoms. The normal value of blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg. Even if high blood pressure doesn't have any obvious symptoms, it can cause significant damage to cardiovascular health and blood vessels. Uncontrolled hypertension exposes you to the risks of stroke and cardiac arrest. Following are the causes and complications of hypertension:

Causes of Hypertension
The causes of hypertension vary depending on the two types of the condition namely primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. In case of primary hypertension there are hardly any identifiable causes.

Recently diagnosed high blood pressure with following signs may be due to secondary hypertension:

  1. High blood pressure not responding to blood pressure medications (resistant hypertension)
  2. Very high BP — systolic blood pressure over 180 (mm Hg) or diastolic blood pressure over 120
  3. Sudden-onset high blood pressure before age 30 or after age 55 Risk factors includes-
  4. High blood pressure tends to run in families.
  5. Being overweight or obesity, physically inactivity.
  6. Using tobacco/ smoking or chewing tobacco, too much salt (sodium) in your diet, Drinking too much alcohol
  7. Having more than two drinks a day for men and more than one drink a day for women may affect your blood pressure.
  8. Stress. High levels of stress /family history of high BP

Certain medications like contraceptives, painkillers and some other drugs

  1. Sleep disorders
  2. Problems related to the kidney
  3. Tumors in the adrenal gland
  4. Thyroid issues
  5. Congenital heart defects from birth
  6. Drug abuse
  7. Excessive consumption of alcohol
  8. Complications of hypertension

Persistent high blood pressure can result in atherosclerosis that is hardening of the arteries. This can severely wreck cardiovascular health and cause stroke, heart attack or other complications. Hypertension can also result in a disorder called aneurysm in which the blood vessels tend to swell and weaken. Rupture of an aneurysm can be fatal.

Heart failure is one of the most serious complications associated with hypertension. It becomes increasingly difficult for the heart to pump blood along with the high pressure. Consequently, the heart muscle thickens and leads to cardiac arrest. It can also lead to kidney problems. Narrowing and weakening of certain blood vessels present in the kidney can cause organ failure. It can also lead to eye problems and sometimes even loss of vision due to narrowing or thickening of blood vessels in the eye.

Metabolic syndrome, which refers to a cluster of deficiencies in the metabolism of your body including high triglycerides, low levels of good cholesterol (High density lipoprotein) and high levels of insulin. These metabolic disorders increase the risk of developing diabetes and other complications. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and interference with your ability to remember and think. It can trigger memory loss and affect your understanding and deriving skills. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a general physician.

Hello sir ,I am 21 year old my weight is approx 70 kg ,I am little fat ,my bp always high between 90 to 100 ,i always taking yawn I cannot do exercise due to study please suggest me.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear Lybrate User, you may have come across a number of gimmicking advertisement of medicines which claim to decrease body weight in a very short time. Do not fall prey for such advertisement because the excess weight would not be shredded until each & every underlying cause of being overweight is diagnosed & treated. The basic role behind the process of accumulation of fat in human body is played by Metabolism. Metabolism is the set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. The three main purposes of metabolism are the conversion of food/fuel to energy to run cellular processes, the conversion of food/fuel to building blocks for proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and some carbohydrates, and the elimination of nitrogenous wastes. Accumulation of fat indicates that a considerable amount of the calories which you are taking daily is not used up by the body & is stored as fat. In order to lose the excess fat you need to increase your rate of metabolism. Once your rate of metabolism or BMR is increased your body will use up the excess calories stored as fat in your body. First of all you need to rule out the possibility of the presence of any hormonal disturbance that may be affecting your metabolism. Just conduct a total Thyroid profile test of all your blood (also Serum Testosterone level in case of males). If the reports are within normal limits then you should proceed further to increase your metabolism. If you find any abnormalities in the report you should immediately consult a doctor.

I feel restless, uncomfortable, nervous, uneasy from the last 10 days. I chked my bp. It was low. Nd wen I east fried food. sometimes I hv pain in the centre of the chest. So wat is the reason behind dis? Wat shud I do?

PG Diploma In Clinical Cosmetology (PGDCC), MBBS
Cardiologist, Mumbai
Hello. Your symptoms could be suggestive of low blood sugar, thyroid abnormality or hypotension as you said your bp was low. Or because of some stress work or exam related. You need to check your blood sugar levels. Fried and spicy foods tend to cause gastritis causing heartburn which present as central chest pain. Avoid eating such kind of foods, drink plenty of fluids, avoid coffee and tea between meals.

I am SUFFERING FROM pain in my heart. I have no sugar. My pressure is 110/70. Always. It is happening for the last 6 months. Once in a month. While taking deep breath there seems like a congestion. Is it something serious? How can I be sure without any test that it is heart problem. Please guide me.

MD - General Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Jaipur
Dear sir pain from chest is due to insufficient supply of blood to heart muscles, this is called angina which occurred when heart rate increases and on exertion. The other one is due to total occlusion of vessel which is causing sudden severe pain. It is shown that your bp is normal and no sugar. You do not have major risk but you must under go testing to see that heart is ok.

You should remain cautious about BP of your husband. BP should be checked daily or next day that is the prime condition. After wards we can think about dietary salt restrictions. Not only salt restriction but less and liquid diet free from harmful cholesterol should be given. Correction of Vitamin B12 levels by injectables or tablet can also be helpful.

She needs to be put on medicines for depression. Besides improving depression, antidepressants will have many different additional benefits like improving quality of life, reducing pain, improving other minor physical complaints that she may be having. I strongly recommend antidepressants for her.
