5 Common Vascular Disorders

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, Fellowship in Vascular Surgery, Ted Rogers Fellowship

5 Common Vascular Disorders

Vascular disorders are disorders of the vessels in your body that carry either blood or waste products. The vascular system consists of the arteries (that carry blood away from the heart), veins (that carry blood to the heart) and lymph vessels (that carry waste products to be excreted from the body). The various diseases of the vascular or circulatory system are:

  1. Peripheral Artery Disease: Peripheral arteries carry blood to the various organs and tissues in the body. Accumulation of cholesterol and fat in the vessels narrow the pathway for the blood to flow. This can impair blood flow to the tissues in the body and cause complications. Various medications used to lower cholesterol and blood pressure can also be used for peripheral artery disease.
  2. Buerger's Disease: This disease causes obstructions in the veins and arteries in the legs. This can hamper blood supply in the toes and the feet. It causes pain and may require amputation in severe cases. Treatments for this disease include smoking cessation and medications to dilute blood vessels.
  3. Aneurysm: An aneurysm is swelling in the blood vessel walls; it usually occurs in the aorta. The artery walls become fragile and are placed under a lot of stress; this may lead to a sudden rupture of the aortic vessels. This disorder is usually treated by surgical procedures.
  4. Peripheral Venous Disease: Peripheral venous disease is characterized by damage to the valves that allows blood to flow in a single direction. Damaged valves can cause blood to flow backwards and therefore, accumulate. Treatments for this disorder are incorporating certain lifestyle habits such as quitting smoking and alcohol.
  5. Blood clots in the veins: Blood clots may occur in the veins present inside the muscles of the thighs and lower legs which lead to deep vein thrombosis. You may be prescribed anti-coagulants, also known as blood thinners, to treat this disorder.

Causes
People with diseases such diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney failure can be more likely to have vessel problems. Working with vibrating tools, being in cold temperatures, and smoking can worsen vascular problems. Causes of vascular disorders usually fit into one of 5 groups:

  1. Traumatic, which occur after injury
  2. Compressive, which occur when the pipes flatten
  3. Occlusive, which occur when pipes are blocked
  4. Tumors (growths) or malformations (deformed, tangled pipes), which may or may not be present at birth
  5. Vessel spasms, which occur when abnormal control of vessels causes them to narrow

Symptoms
Symptoms of vascular disorders can include:

  1. Pain
  2. Abnormal color changes in the fingertips
  3. Ulcers or wounds that do not heal
  4. Hand problems when in cold temperatures or locations
  5. Numbness or tingling of the fingertips
  6. Swelling
  7. Cool or cold fingers and/or hands

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

You should start daily walk for at least 30 min. Follow low fat and low salt diet. Avoid junk food, cut in sugars. Check BP regularly. If after doing all this for a month BP is more then 140/ 90 mmhg then start medicine.

Then why is Cow milk recommended by every one when it's Cholesterol level is high and other beneficial properties are lower than buffaloes milk.

Then why is Cow milk recommended by every one when it's Cholesterol level is high and other beneficial properties are...
Whole milk from cows contains plenty of vitamins and calcium but also 8 grams of saturated fat per 250 ML and 156 calories. Saturated fat intake has been shown to increase cholesterol levels----Since most of the fat in dairy products is saturated fat, whole milk is not good for people watching their cholesterol.-------A serving of whole milk also has 35 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol. Whole milk is great for kids up to 2 years old, but for adults, 300 mg of cholesterol is the daily limit — so if you get most of your daily calcium from milk, whole milk is not a wise choice.-------- f you want to drink or cook with cow's milk and are worried about cholesterol, skim milk — non-fat milk and fat-free milk — is the way to go. Skim is healthier, with no saturated fat, only 5 grams of cholesterol, and just 92 calories per 250 ml serving. You get all the calcium and, if fortified, vitamin D with no downside.

Chest Congestion - Causes And Ayurvedic Remedies!

Chest Congestion - Causes And Ayurvedic Remedies!

Ayurveda is an ancient life science that originated in India. It recognises herbs as medicines and Yogic postures as well as lifestyle changes as the supporting factors in its medicinal field. It is called a life science because the basic mode of treatment is done by tweaking one's lifestyle in order to reach the root cause of the ailment, which will be cleared from one's life gradually. Congestion is recognised as the accumulation of too much mucus and fluid in your lungs and is usually born due to an imbalance of the Vata Dosha, as per Ayurveda. This congestion can happen in the nasal or respiratory passages.

Let us find out what else Ayurveda says about congestion:

  • Symptoms: The symptoms of congestion include a tickling sensation at the back of the throat as well as the nasal passages, depending on the exact area of the congestion. Also, severe headaches and wheezing along with laboured breathing and tightening of the chest can point at the presence of congestion. In very severe cases, the patient may also complain of blood discharge while coughing, high fever, rashes on the skin, neck stiffness and other such conditions.
  • Causes: There are various causes of congestion. While infection, allergy and cold are some of the most common conditions that may cause congestion, it has also been seen that congestion may arise as a symptom of a more serious ailment. Asthma is one such respiratory ailment that causes swelling in the airways, which can give rise to congestion. Also, inflammation of the bronchial tube lining can cause this condition where a greenish discharge happens due to the viral nature of the condition. Pneumonia and tuberculosis are also ailments, which can cause severe and painful congestion.
  • Remedies: As per Ayurveda, there are many remedies that can help in treating this condition. One can drink herbal tea all day as the anti-oxidants will help in flushing out all those toxins that are causing a painful build-up of mucus and fluids inside. Also, one can use essential oils like eucalyptus oil for inhalation, steaming and even massages. One must take care not to let this oil touch the hair as greying might happen. Yoga and aromatherapy can also be practiced so as to do away with congestion. Also, the patient can add a pinch of salt to a glass of warm water in order to do a saline water gargle which will eventually clear the air passages.

Taking care of one's diet is one of the most important parts of any treatment in Ayurveda. Ingesting warm liquids like milk and warm food can help in loosening and removing the mucus build up. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Hypertension is a lifestyle disease which requires only lifestyle changes and no medicine is needed provided the triggers are identified and treated. BP medicines cause complications which your Dr. Is not going to talk about and you never ask your doctor also and you land up in more new diseases. Doctors lack, nutrition knowledge have vested monetary interests and they do incomplete testing and do not give lifestyle advice which will cure your elevated Bp without medicines .Never believe in the lies told by drs that you have to take BP medicines lifelong. Reversible causes of BP like Mineral, Vitamin deficiency, high calorie diet, Thyroid disease ,Stress etc needs to be excluded and treated which will cure your high BP. 1) Detailed history including dietary & lifestyle habits needed in addition to medical, occupational ,& environment history 2) Comprehensive lab testing needed which should have tests for inflammation and mineral deficiency. Get detailed dietary and lifestyle advice based on the basis of detailed history and lab tests results. If you do not follow these 2 steps you will be left with no other option other than life long medications and Dr. Shopping Send feedback with name and contact number and take consult. Rule out any structural heart disease as proved by normal cardiac tests like Echo, and TMT, If your test results are all normal but you are still having high BP that clearly indicates your Dr. Has not addressed the root cause of the problem. Dr. Medicating you without educating you puts a temporary fix. Do not stop medications without complete change in lifestyle and diet and bp monitoring at home. Wake up and Get educated and never medicated for any Lifestyle and dietary disease like high BP and reverse your elevated BP naturally. So change your diet, change your lifestyle, change your doctor and you will get permanent cure for sure.
