My mother fell and cracked a vertebrae. She has osteoporosis. She was given a brace but it doesn't seem to be helping. Is there any treatment for this?

MBBS, MS, DNB, FNB (SPINE SURGERY)

My mother fell and cracked a vertebrae. She has osteoporosis. She was given a brace but it doesn't seem to be helping...
Osteoporotic vertebral fractures usually become painless by 4 to 6 weeks as the fracture heals. Medicines, rest and brace are initial treatment. Sometimes the fracture doesn't heal well and pain persists. Vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty are the procedures usually done in such situation for pain relief. They are minimally invasive as bone cement is injected into the fractured vertebra through a needle. These procedures give immediate pain relief. You must see a spine surgeon to see if it is suitable for her. Medical treatment for osteoporosis should go on at the same time.

The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed. If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.

Dear patient, there is no need to re do the crown for 7, unless your wisdom tooth is not get locked/blocked underneath its distal end. Infact in that worse case too, wisdom tooth can skilfully be removed without disturbing the crown on 7. Remember:- skillfully (u need an experienced surgeon for that)

The extraction socket from where tooth is removed, will take its natural course of time to heal. To avoid delay in healing or infections, you should maintain good hygiene and do warm salt water rinses. Also, take the prescribed medication as advised.

I am 57 years old teeth is paining I can't eat & talk properly my lips become cross I am diabetic past 12 years.
The disease of teeth and gums in which there is bone loss is called periodontitis. It is the sixth complication of diabetes. First consult your physician and check whether you blood sugar is under normal level or not. If sugar is under normal level then start dental treatment. However you can consult a dentist, its better to bring your recent blood sugar investigation, (fasting, pp, glycated hb etc). If your sugar is not under normal values then you will be prescribed some mouthwash and medicines. If there is no emergency then dental treatment can be delayed until your sugar is at normal level.

Why People Avoid Dental Care Treatments?

Dental Health is important.

Although, most of us enjoy a healthy oral condition that's because we have been taught by parents and school teachers that we should keep our teeth clean. The School might have arranged dental health seminars and taught how to brush, what to do with your teeth, and how to keep them healthy.

That's how we are going to teach our generation. It's a process.

What Dentists Need to Do?

Dentists are experts in oral health care and management. Not only they treat the dental patients, but also make people aware how to avoid the dental issues. Dentist's responsibilities include:

Diagnosing the oral diseases and problems.

Spreading the awareness on oral health.

Providing the solutions for dental health issues.

Making and implementing the dental health plans for patients.

Make necessary assessment arrangements such as dental x-ray to start treatment.

Guiding the patients during and after the treatment.

Showing case studies of past experiences to aware patients and other people.

5 Reasons Why People Avoid Dental Treatment

Following are the reasons why people normally avoid their dental treatments in the first place:

1. They have busy Schedules

People have busy schedules. We all have jobs to do. That's one of the reasons most people delay or avoid their dental treatments because they think they don't have time after their job hours. Keeping that in mind, we shouldn't avoid our dental treatment.

2. They don't want lengthy Procedures

Admit it. Dental procedures are lengthy and time-consuming. It might take 3 to 4 months if you have a major oral disease or dental treatment. Haven't you heard from people that they have kept the braces on for next six months as per dentist's advice?

3. They Feel no Pain

If there is no pain, there is no problem. Some people think that way!

It's fair. You might be noticing the symptoms of a dental problem while having ice cream or drinking coffee. If you feel something is wrong with your teeth, you better consult with a dentist before something goes really bad and gets worse.

4. They don't want dental treatment pain

Pain is one of the treatment avoiding factors. Especially women and children don't want to have dental treatment pain. Delaying or avoiding the dental checkup or surgery due to the fear of pain isn't the right thing to do.

5. They don't consider it as Important

People who think it's not really important to get dental treatments should read the American Dental Association's views on Dental Care. Once they read that, they will find out that scientific studies have shown the association of dental issues with other diseases including diabetes and heart problems.
