What Makes Chocolate Poisonous to Dogs?

Chocolate is made from cocoa, and cocoa beans contain caffeine and a related chemical compound called theobromine, which is the real danger.

The problem is that dogs metabolize theobromine much more slowly than humans, reported by Denver veterinarian Kevin Fitzgerald, PhD, tells WebMD.

“The buzz we get from eating chocolate may last 20 to 40 minutes, but for dogs it lasts many hours,” he says. “After 17 hours, half of the theobromine a dog has ingested is still in the system.”

Theobromine is also toxic to cats, but there are very few reported cases of theobromine poisoning in felines because they rarely eat chocolate.

Dogs, on the other hand, will eat just about anything.

Even small amounts of chocolate can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Truly toxic amounts can induce hyperactivity, tremors, high blood pressure, a rapid heart rate, seizures, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest.

I have just adopted labrador pup he is 35 days old. My concern is when should I get him his 1st vaccination. As from whom I adopted he said on 42 days direct booster I consulted 1 vet doctor he said you should start from, 33 days age I am confused. Kindly guide He wants to bite on everything I think he is getting irritated as his teeth are erupting kindly reply.

Vaccination from vet should start from 45 day of puppy birth. Its the time when dhppi or 9 in 1 or 7 in 1 vaccine starts. This vaccine mainly immunes puppy from diseases like parvo and distemper. Upto 4 and half month, a series of vaccines will be given to puppy. Consult your nearby vet and go for vaccination whenever he or she calls your puppy.

Hi. My pug is 5 months. Shedding a lot. And please let me know what should I make him eat as he is very fuzzy and just likes eating boiled chicken 2 times a day. Is it safe for him to have daily chicken. Or what else I should try feeding him. Please suggest.

Yes safe to feed your dog with boiled chicken as by birth they care carnivores and for hair shedding please give him omega fatty acids to control shedding or fish oil.

My Dog is not eating. Her mouth has a terrible foul smell and has developed red rashes between her hind legs and under the tail. She has even become very aggressive and grumpy, and would not let anyone try to get her active.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
How old is your pet? the foul smell could be from the dental disease. Kindly get her oral cavity evaluated for any dental disease/loose tooth/tarter/tooth root abscess etc. From a qualified Vet. These explorations are done generally under sedation. Take care.

I have a doberman puppy. It's 5 weeks old and I need amputation and ear cropping done. Ear cropping needs to take place within a few weeks. I there any decent vet surgeon that I can approach.

As the cropping of ear and tail docking is banned in india so I suggest you not to go for it. This is a illegal practice and should not be performed. Ad when you go for cropping etc you will not able to participate in any dog show.

I have adopted a street dog and he is around 2.5 months old. He has a tendency to eat potty. I am giving 2.5ml of osteopet twice a day. Already 1 bottle is already finished. Please suggest.

It could b pica, eating non food items, or worms in the stomach which do not allow to absorb nutrients n minerals no matter how good quality food you gave or it could be a behavioral issue what animals want to clean up all their body excreta in order to keep their territory clean. Might hv learnt from other street dogs b4 adoption. Il suggest you deworm the puppy first and see. In three days.

Might be digestion complication . Please take it to a vet and also concentrate fibre content in the dog as it will also lead to such compliances
