I had mild bleeding during sex with my fiancé which just got over soon after sex. Bleeding was extremely light like discharge and light brown in colour. Sex was also rough and was done after a span of 5 months. Doctor asked me to go for Pap smear. Results show moderate neutrophilic infiltrate. What does it mean? Was this bleeding due to infection or rough sex?

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Neurotrophilic infiltrate is the diffusion or accumulation of neutrophils in tissues or cells in response to a wide variety of substances released at the sites of inflammatory reactions. This could happen because of the rough sexual intercourse you had. Though there is nothing to worry, you should follow the advise of your gynecologist. Take care.

PCOS - 8 Associated Symptoms

PCOS - 8 Associated Symptoms

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the condition when a woman's sex hormone levels get imbalanced. This can cause women to have irregular periods and may also have an impact on their fertility. Women suffering from PCOS also tend to grow small cysts in their ovaries which can also lead to severe health problems like diabetes and heart disease, if left untreated.

What causes PCOS?

The exact cause of PCOS is not known. However, the condition may be triggered by hormonal imbalances and genetic factors. Women are more susceptible to developing this condition if their mother or a female family member also has the condition. Excessive production of androgen, which is a male sex hormone, may also lead to this condition. Women suffering from PCOS tend to have high levels of androgen. The formation of eggs and their release during ovulation can be delayed by high levels of androgen. High androgen levels may result from excess insulin present in the blood. Poor lifestyle and irregular eating habits contribute to obesity which intern leads to increased insulin resistance and hence delayed ovulation and irregular cycles leading to infertility.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

The type of symptom in case of PCOS varies from person to person. Since PCOS is characterized by low levels of sex hormones, this condition may lead to symptoms such as:

  1. Excessive hair growth on stomach, face, chest, toes and thumbs
  2. The breast size starts to shrink
  3. There is a change in voice, making it deeper
  4. There is excessive loss of hair from your scalp
  5. Sometimes the face is filled with acne and the skin turns oily
  6. There are fertility problems like having trouble in ovulating or recurring miscarriages
  7. Frequent depression or mood swings
  8. Facing breathings problems while sleeping
  9. Obesity

Diagnosis

On examination, findings in women with PCOS may include the following:

  • Virilizing signs
  • Acanthosis nigricans
  • Hypertension
  • Enlarged ovaries: May or may not be present; evaluate for an ovarian mass

Management

Lifestyle modifications are considered first-line treatment for women with PCOS. Such changes include the following:

Pharmacologic treatments are reserved for so-called metabolic derangements, such as anovulation, hirsutism, and menstrual irregularities. First-line medical therapy usually consists of an oral contraceptive to induce regular menses.

If symptoms such as hirsutism are not sufficiently alleviated, an androgen-blocking agent may be added. First-line treatment for ovulation induction when fertility is desired are letrozole or clomiphene citrate. [2, 3, 5]

Surgical management of PCOS is aimed mainly at restoring ovulation. Various laparoscopic methods include the following:

You must follow the most fertile period of your cycle. If cycle is regular of 27-30 days then your fertile period should be from 12th to 16th day, starting from the first day of onset of your periods.

Insufficient Cervix - Symptoms, Risk Factors And Treatment!

Insufficient Cervix - Symptoms, Risk Factors And Treatment!

The cervix is a part of the female reproductive system. It is the lower part of the woman's uterus, and it connects the vagina with the uterus. This is usually closed and tight, but ends up dilating during occasions like pregnancy and childbirth. The cervix is also known to soften eventually during the course of one's pregnancy and delivery. In case the cervix starts to open up too early, this condition is known as an insufficient cervix or an incompetent cervix. Here is everything you need to know about this condition.

Definition and symptoms: An incompetent or insufficient cervix is one that opens up too early and does not support a normal delivery. The symptoms that may point at this condition include pressure in the pelvic area, pain in the back, light bleeding from the vagina, mild cramps in the abdomen, and a change in the odour and hue of the vaginal discharge that may be experienced by the pregnant woman. Usually, such symptoms and changes are not seen in the early stages of one's pregnancy. Mostly, the symptoms are experienced after the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, in the second trimester, when there is greater pressure on the area due to the growing fetus.

Risk factors: There are a number of factors that increase the risk of this condition, including congenital conditions like uterine anomalies and other genetic disorders. These disorders may affect the fibrous protein that produces the connective tissue of the body, which is also known as collagen. When there is a decrease in this kind of tissue, the cervix becomes incompetent or insufficient. Also, when there has been overexposure to synthetic estrogen, this kind of condition may be experienced. Further, cervical trauma is another factor that may cause this condition along with dilation and curettage, which is a procedure that corrects uterine conditions.

Treatment: The main form of treatment usually includes the prescription of progesterone supplements in the form of weekly administered injections. Also, serial ultrasounds every fortnight can help in monitoring the situation closely so that the doctor is able to ascertain whether or not you are going to be able to go through a normal delivery or not. Cervical cerclage is also a surgical procedure that can help such a condition. In this procedure, the cervix is stitched up with strong sutures, which will be removed in the last month of pregnancy, or just before the delivery. This is especially helpful if there have been cases of premature delivery in the past. This procedure is usually carried out within the first 14 weeks of the pregnancy to avoid loss of the fetus. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.
