How Best You Can Manage Your Autistic Child?

The moment when you learn about your child being autistic can be a life changing moment for you. You might feel all the dreams and aspirations which you built around your child come crashing down on a pile of zilch. However, recent developments in this field show that you can certainly take steps to make your child more comfortable and bond well with them.

Autism related disorder usually begin before the age of 3, when the child starts encountering problems in communication and social interaction. This article tries to help you find a way to deal with an autistic child:

  1. Learn more about autism: Learn about autism as much as you can; a broad understanding of the causes and symptoms of the disorder can help you understand your child better. This will also enable you to respond to your child’s needs better, both physical and psychological.
  2. Build a strong support system: It is difficult to parent a child who is suffering from autism. Communicating and interacting with your child might be extremely difficult and problematic. In order to overcome this stress, you should have a strong support network, a support network from which you can draw your strength and logic once you have to take major life decisions for your child.
  3. Review your treatment options: It is advisable to start treatment immediately after the diagnosis is done. Early treatment can help better your child’s cognitive skills that can help him/her cope better with the surroundings and circumstances. The treatment options include behavioral training whereby self-help or social skills training is used to work on the child’s communication skills and behavior. Specialized therapy is another option whereby the therapies are directed at a particular aspect of the child, primarily speech or physical functioning.
  4. Focus on your child’s diet: Diet plays an important role in the regularization of any disease. Even in case of autism, deficiency of certain vitamins or minerals makes it very important to analyze the diet and then assess it. Consult with the doctor before making any modification to the child’s diet.
  5. Behavioral training: Behavioral training is an aspect of autism treatment that allows the child to adapt to various conditions. Before a child undergoes behavioral training, it is advised to assess his/her behavior, functional abilities and the environment your child belongs to. The objective of this therapy or training is to induce desired behavior and get rid of the undesirable ones.

Hypersomnolence - How It Can Be Managed?

MD - Psychiatry

Hypersomnolence - How It Can Be Managed?

Sleep is known to most as a period of rest and relaxation, but there are multiple disorders which are associated with sleep too. Hypersomnolence or hypersomnia is one of the most common sleep disordersThis is characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness and prolonged periods of sleep at night. They wake up fresh in the morning, but can easily go back to sleep any time of the day without feeling strained or tired. There is again no freshness associated upon waking up. Funny as it may sound, they can doze off even during a meal or in the middle of a conversation.

Causes: This condition is most common in men and in the early adolescent days.

  1. There is no underlying cause that has been identified, though there is a genetic predisposition.
  2. People with history of head trauma are more affected
  3. People with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, epilepsy, and other mental disorders are also more likely to be affected
  4. People with sleep apnea often are hypersomnolence
  5. Restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy
  6. Neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s tend to sleep more.

Symptoms:

  1. Sleeping for longer hours at night time
  2. Excessively sleepy during daytime
  3. Able to doze off anytime during the day
  4. Inappropriate and involuntary sleeping pattern
  5. Having difficulty getting out of bed after waking up, even after prolonged sleep
  6. Feeling of disorientation
  7. Feeling agitated, anxious, lethargic, and irritated
  8. Impaired cognition and memory
  9. All these lead to extreme state of drowsiness
  10. Increased tendency for hallucinations
  11. Reduced appetite and even weight loss in some people
  12. There is restlessness, reduced pace of thinking and speaking
  13. Overall reduced energy levels
  14. Social interactions are affected including work life, social functions, etc.

Diagnostic criteria:

  1. If a person happens to sleep more at night or falls asleep during the day easily for more than 3 times a week, it is usually concerning.
  2. The added feature of no tiring physical activity can also lead to suspicion
  3. In acute cases, these symptoms are present for at least a month and in chronic cases, it could be seen for up to 3 months
  4. It cannot be explained by lack of sleep on a regular basis
  5. One or more of the above conditions could be present, which can help in making the diagnosis

Treatment:
Most cases of hypersomnia would need treatment only to improve their energy levels and improve the quality of life. Very often, treating the underlying condition can lead to improvement of hypersomnia. The tired, lethargic, restless feeling affects the overall performance of a person, leaving them with a lowered self-esteem. Brain stimulating drugs like amphetamines are used to improve daytime alertness and also reduce sleepy feeling during the day. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

My friend, when he was a child met with an accident with a sharp object in his eye. He lost his eye sight due to that and now he has only a partial eye sight to that eye (can detect only shapes which are close and that too with blur). His eye pupil lost it's normal exact circular shape. He can see with his other eye and due to this, he got squint too. Now he wants to get back his vision to his eye. Question: 1. Is it possible to get back the vision back completely? 2. What is the problem and it's name which caused this condition to him? 3. Such kind of treatment or what should be done to get back his eye sight completely. Note: Somebody told him, there may be optical nerve damage. Is it true? If yes, then what should be done to get back his eye sight completely?

My friend, when he was a child met with an accident with a sharp object in his eye. He lost his eye sight due to that...
Hello. Sorry about your friend's eye problem. Coming to your first question: unfortunately, it would not be possible to get back complete vision in the damaged eye. Vision lost during childhood is difficult to recover after so many years. The initial years of life are the ones that determine the growth and development of the eye. During this period the eye learns to see. Once the vision is compromised during childhood, there is very less chance of recovering it at such a late stage. Coming to your second query, the name of the condition would be amblyopia (post traumatic) or lazy eye. Also, there may be associated wound related scars and structural defects in the eye. There may be damage to the retina, lens or the cornea of the eye. As you mentioned, damage to the optic nerve may have caused optic atrophy in the eye. Regarding to your third question, it might be possible to treat him for the squint. The misalignment of the eyes could be rectified by surgery but it would not recover vision for him. Once again, sorry for your friend. Take care.

Migraine - Homeopathic Treatment For It!

A migraine is a headache that causes a distinct pulsating pain, usually in one side of the head. It is different from normal headaches in the sense that the pain is much more intense and it may be accompanied by nausea or vomiting as well. Some patients have also complained about light sensitivity while others have also complained about pain in all areas of the head.

Some of the factors that separate a migraine from a normal headache are as follows:

  1. Headache may last for a day, whereas migrane lasts longer, even 3 days, sometimes. IV trigger
  2. Feelings of nausea or actual vomiting
  3. Sensitivity to light
  4. Extreme sensitivity to changes in sound

Causes Behind Migraines

Some of the common and known causes, which may trigger migraines in people are:

- Hormonal changes in the body that may have adverse effects
- Dehydration is also known to trigger migraines
- Patients with hypoglycemia may also face migraines if the blood sugar level drops within their body

- Change in air pressure due to change in altitude may also cause migraines to appear
- Lack of sleep
- Stress
- Lifestyle issues such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Remedies for Migraine in Homeopathy

Migraine is treated in homeopathy by attacking the root causes that may trigger them. Rather than temporarily alleviating pain, homeopathic treatments aim at curing the problem completely.

Some of the medicines that are known to be effective are:

  • Natrum Mur: A proper dose of this medicine provides great relief in migraine caused by stress, especially.
  • Belladonna: This had been known to be a great provider of relief for people who regularly face throbbing headaches.
  • Glonoine: For people who frequently have migraines due to congestion of the sinuses, this medicine has been known to be very effective.
  • Spigelia: To treat migraines in the left side of the head.
  • Sanguinaria: Is highly effective for situations where a migraine is on the right side of the head.
