I have back pain for past two years, also having numbness in my legs, please suggest

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You should not be having persistent back pain, please elaborate your problem in detail as to whether there is any pain radiating down in legs and any other symptoms like numbness, paraesthesia, weakness in legs etc do you feel fever, weight loss, loss of apetite etc if you have localized back pain, you can start with - to maintain proper posture while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. Get back to me in case your symptoms do not get better in 2-3 weeks time. Actually I will advise for dynamic x rays of your back if you are not improving with conservative management after 2-3 weeks time. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Hi, Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - Reduce your weight if you are obese. - Perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - Quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - Quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - Sleep on sides instead on back. - Elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - Clear the nose before going to bed. - Establish regular sleep pattern. - Keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - Perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - Anti snoring appliances can also be used.

My father has been suffering from Parkinson's disease since 2007. Now it has reached a maximum severe condition. He has been taking levodopa supplement (Syndopa (levodopa carbidopa: 250 25) which has been wearing off and causing side effects like Involuntary movement, occasional dementia and he is becoming weaker day by day. We have consulted numbers of doctor including Neurologist, Medicine specialist and we could not find a better alternative of the drugs. We used Tridopa 100 (another levodopa supplement) but the dosage is not working for my father. What I an interested to know if there is any better treatment of this disease? His health is deteriorating day by day. Please let me know.

There are various kinds of drugs for Parkinsonism. Basically if one group of medicine don't work we try different. I am sure your doctor must have tried all options. Your father also needs anti dementia medicine. It should be started at the earliest as it can only prevent deterioration and cannot reverse the dementia. Keep your father in a room where he gets multiple stimulations from environment like light, air, sound and keeps in constant touch with what is happening around . This will reduce confusion of dementia

Can I be cured of epileptic fits? Actually it comes not by birth but before 8 years when I got fever my mom took me to one R.M.P clinic doctor he didn't given me antinode but another medicine then I got reaction then epilepsy came then I shown in hospital and im in medication after 3 years I neglected tablets which were given by physician then again it comes now (WHEN IT COMES IT WILL COME ON LIPS SHAKING I will be in conscious only lips shakes that's it) I'm using time to time now nothing I'm free I'm in medication I'm using eptoin 100 mg morning flouvite 5 mg afternoon in night eptoin 150 mg frisium 10 mg Can I be cured of epileptic fits? (Seizure) and Any problem in Future about this Epilepsy?

DNB (Neurosurgery) , MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Pune
When epilepsy is uncontrolled inspite of taking adequate and appropriate medications, there are surgical treatments available to deal with it effectively. It is called as epilepsy surgery. When a part of brain which is responsible to producing fits can be recognised well on Mri as well as electrophysiological investigations, it can safely be removed using surgical means and at times epilepsy can be cured. But only after taking into consideration whole of the clinical scenario, one can tell whether a patient can be cured from epilepsy or better control can be achieved. You need to consult an epileptologist to know more about these options. Regards.

Hello lybrate-user, Yes, in physiotherapy there is treatment for Bells Palsy. Muscle stimulation can be given on the origin of nerve. Fascial muscles action in form of contraction can be achieved. Exercises and objects like blowing rubber baloon and sipping through straw can help. Condition improves with every sitting. I hope this will help you.

EEG report is abnormal. Do I need to start medication for epilepsy? My medication stopped in 2012. Last seizure was in 2001.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, Fellow in Pain Management, DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Delhi
Hello. It depends on what you had initially. Some Epilepsy syndromes do not usually have recurrence but some of them like JME have recurrence. If there is no siezure since 2001 you need not restart medications. You can repeat the EEG to be sure and then consult again.
