Hello Lybrate user, it is important to know if the wisdom tooth is in a favorable position to erupt or not. For this a radio-graph/x-ray is required. Depending on the position of the tooth, either the gum tissue surrounding the erupting tooth need to be removed /operculectomy or the tooth itself might need to be surgically extracted/removed. The cost for both the treatment option is different and variable. To know the exact details it is advisable to visit a Dentist at the earliest. Get well soon.

Hi Ms. lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Well, the exact cause of recurrent oral ulcer (s) though unknown, you can take the following steps in general to lessen the incidences of the same - (a) Maintain oral hygiene on a regular basis - keep your mouth clean and healthy. (b) You can reduce the risk of damage to your mouth by using good quality & soft toothbrushes and also by leveling off rough edges of teeth/ dentures, if any. Preferably, I would recommend use of 'Neem' toothpaste for brushing. (c) Eat a healthy and balanced diet rich in vitamins A, B, C and E. Include fresh fruit and green leafy vegetables to reduce the risks of oral cancer. (d) Take Green tea, up to 2 times daily. Stay well hydrated. (e) Avoid high calorie, greasy, fatty, oily foods including fast foods. Restrict consumption of sweets, carbonated drinks etc all. (f) Apart from diet, make sure you streamline your lifestyle too with daily exercises, de-stressing and relaxation. If you are habitually constipated, the above-mentioned shall help. (g) You can take a tablet of probiotics (like 'Sporlac DS' or 'Becelac forte' capsules) daily before food, subject to your dentist's concurrence. As an alternative, you may take once curd and buttermilk spiced up with a little bit of turmeric on a daily basis. (h) If the ulcer pains, you can apply a pain relieving gel (as advised by your dentist), locally. Do gargle / rinse your mouth with Betadine gargle (not to be swallowed) 2 to 3 times daily, after food. Alternately, you can also use warm saline water for gargling. (i) Should the ulcer pain, you can apply (topically) a layer of fresh and pasteurized honey (good quality) on the ulcer (s). You may also slowly apply ice cubes for sometime to alleviate pain. (j) Last but not the least, regularly visit your dentist. If you see the ulcer not healing up for more than 3 weeks, do visit your dentist promptly, and get the same clinically examined. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.

If pain is due to decay on tooth then you have to go for root canal treatment to cure it. If pain is due to erupting wisdom tooth then it is advised to get it removed from the dentist soon. Xray is required for proper suggestion. Visit to a dentist for examination and proper treatment plan. Medicine will give you only temporary relief. For permanent solution you should visit to a dentist.

I brush my teeth regularly twice a day but the colour remains yellowish, what can I do to whiten my teeth?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

I brush my teeth regularly twice a day but the colour remains yellowish, what can I do to whiten my teeth?
Sir, for each people just like skin color, the tooth color will be different by nature and cannot be changed. You can visit a dentist and get a scaling procedure done. If the yellow color is external stains and dirt then that treatment will be effective. There are some procedures like bleaching to whiten the teeth if you are still not happy, but these are used in extreme cases where the teeth is very discolored only. You can ask your dentist to suggest a toothpaste for whitening the teeth, which may be effective to some extent.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need braces. You may consult me in person too. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

I have a pain in my teeth & sometimes blood is present in the peak. What should I do?
You have pain may be due to gum disease known as gingivitis and plaque deposition. Go to a dental clinic for scaling. This will help you. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash three times a day after each meal. Use crest toothpaste. Keep your mouth clean. Brush properly. You can consult me also for further advice.

I have a problem in my teeth .although I am taking care of it. What should precautions I need.

I have a problem in my teeth .although I am taking care of it. What should precautions I need.
1. Proper Brushing One of the easiest steps to do to help your teeth keep clean. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth using a back-and-forth, up-and-down motion, making sure to be done gently in order to avoid bleeding. To clean the inside surfaces of the teeth and gums, place the bristles at a 45-degree angle again and repeat the back-and-forth, up-and-down motion. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath. Try to brush at least twice a day to prevent acid buildup from the breakdown of food by bacteria. However, if your work or activities prevent you from doing this, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water after eating to minimize the amount of food that would serve as substrate for the bacteria. 2. Flossing! We know, it’s a chore and alot of times forgetful after brushing if rushing out the door or heading to bed. However, flossing can help you remove food particles and other detrimental substances that brushing regularly cannot. Flossing allows you to reach deep between your teeth where the toothbrush bristles cannot reach or even mouthwash cannot wash away. We recommend flossing at least once a day. 3. Avoid Tobacco This will be a big favor to your teeth. One, it will save you from oral cancer and periodontal complications. Two, it will save you from the countless ill effects caused by the agents used to mask the smell of tobacco. For example, if you smoke a cigarette, you may use candies, tea or coffee to mask the smoky breath and odor. This doubles the amount of damage caused. 4. Limit Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol Although these beverages contain a high level of phosphorous, which is a necessary mineral for a healthy mouth, too much phosphorous can deplete the body’s level of calcium. This causes dental hygiene problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. Beverages containing additives such as corn syrup and food dye can make pearly white teeth appear dull and discolored. Therefore, it is best to choose beverages like milk, which helps strengthen teeth and build stronger enamel, giving you a healthy, beautiful smile and water which hydrates your body longer than sugary drinks. 5. Consume Calcium and other Vitamins that are good for the body You need plenty of calcium for your teeth. It is essential for the teeth as well as your bones. It is better to drink milk, fortified orange juice and to eat yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. You can also take a calcium supplement, taking different doses according to your age and necessity as per prescription. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining the health of gums and teeth. Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene. 6. Visit Your Dentist You should visit your dentist at least twice a year to have a full hygiene treatment performed. Also at these appointments, a comprehensive exam is taken with x-rays to help detect and prevent future dental treatments from occurring. 7. Use Mouthwash along side brushing and flossing Mouthwash is not particularly necessary and not all mouthwashes are useful. Mouthwashes containing Listerine our chlorine dioxide are very helpful because they help to kill and maintain the bacteria in your mouth. It can help maintain good breath as well as help maintain strong teeth. Mouthwash cannot do all the work but if your are already brushing, flossing, visiting the dentist and eating well, mouthwash is the cherry on top that will make your dental health great. 8. Having a toothache or noticing other dental symptoms If you are having tooth and jaw pain make an appointment as soon as possible. Your dentist needs to diagnose the underlying cause and correct it before it turns into a greater problem. 9. Look at the Big Picture Everyone understands that you should take care of your teeth to avoid toothaches, maintain your looks and keep dental bills at bay. Many people, however, don’t understand how crucial oral health is to our total health picture. Tooth problems can lead to diabetes, heart disease, systemic infections, an inability to eat or speak properly and other maladies – some life-threatening. Crooked or crowded teeth can contribute to gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth loss. Straight teeth are no longer just for looks. 10. Clean your tongue Clean the surface of your tongue daily. By using a professional tongue cleaner you remove countless bacteria that otherwise live, particularly on the rougher top surface of your tongue. These can contribute to bad breath (halitosis) and negatively affect your dental health.

Its good that you have cut down on smoking. Alcohol consumption is also quite dangerous in liver disease and may lead to alcoholic fatty liver followed by cirrhosis. Get vaccinated against hepatitis a and b. Take home cooked food and boiled/ro water as they may lead to liver infection.
