What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects?

M.D - Respiratory medicine
Pulmonologist, Hyderabad
Dear lybrate-user best medications are by inhaler since they're in minute microgram doses. How long and how much is best determined by a pulmonologists after methodical assessment by clinical, x-ray and spirometry. Two types are ideally used bythe international guidelines. One which controls the disease in long term while the other relieves the symptom. Medicines that control are very important and symptom reliever is required only when symptoms severe. Combination inhalers contain both. Most patients think they are habit forming which is incorrect. Chronic asthma impairs our lifestyle and efficiency at work. Control and prevent asthma should be the goal. Very few side effects such as tremor of hands, and fast heart rate happen when taken in higher doses or in tablet or syrup or injection.

My question is that my father has discharge from a hospital after Bronchoscopy treatment. He has been suffering from cough bleeding before hospitalisation. Doctors have checked and tested. According to Doctors he has suffered from Lung Infection or cavity in chest. There is no TB found. Doctors said bleeding may be stopped or continued. At the time of discharge from Hospital, father was fine but within two days after discharged again bleeding starting. Can you suggest what should we do? Can you suggest for full treatment.

MBBS, MD - Pulmonary Medicine, DNB - Pulmonary Medicine, MD - Internal Medicine, Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD)
Pulmonologist, Delhi
Bleeding can be stopped by bronchial artery embolisation. Tuberculosis is not ruled out completely in this case. MTB culture and Gene expert are other tests in addition to AFB smear. A CT scan of chest will be helpful in diagnosing cause of cavity. Be in touch with pulmonologist.
