Production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4 increases by about 50%. As a result, the normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level during pregnancy is lower than the normal nonpregnancy level. The new recommendations for TSH levels during pregnancy are the following: First trimester: less than 2.5 with a range of 0.1-2.5.. You have to leave the decision to your doctor

My daughter is advised to take attentrol10mg. She is 18 year old. She get lost and does not pay attention continuously. So doctor told us now that she is having ADHD problem. I just want to ask is it genetic or due to some other reason?

P.G.C.C. Pediatric, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
The exact cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) isn't known. But it may run in families. Ongoing research is focused on finding the genes that cause a person to be likely to get adhd. A mother's use of cigarettes, alcohol, or other drugs during pregnancy may increase the risk for adhd.

My son 8 yrs old he had refusing school and refuse to learning and dis obdientence.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
He is only 8 years and you are the parent: is there any choice he has, or was he given this option about attending school? just lead him by his ear to school and whether he likes it or not, he must be made to go. Now if he not a communicative child, then perhaps he has a problem at school that he may find difficult to discuss with you. Talk to his teacher and find out if there is something at school that is troubling him. If he has friends, talk to them too. If he does not have friends, that could be troubling in itself about the nature of the child. You may then want to check whether he has social problems for various reasons and meet with a child counselor, if the school has not got one. Learning has to be made interesting especially if he is an over-intelligent child. The disobedience will be an attempt to wrest back the control he may have lost when he was younger, or he may have lost his importance, if another child was born recently. The counselor will be able to help with all of these possibilities.

Can I give yogurt dahi to my 10 months old son? And where do I get wheat grass? What all food I can give to my son.

General Physician,
Can I give yogurt dahi to my 10 months old son? And where do I get wheat grass? What all food I can give to my son.
You can give Yoghurt and give all homemade foods. Wheatgrass is available in super markets and online Wheatgrass juice is a popular health drink. It is thought to benefit health only when fresh and taken on an empty stomach immediately after extraction. But there is no research to date that supports this.In foods and beverages, wheatgrass extracts are used as a flavoring component.

Health Tips for Children

With pediatric health problems on a rise, it's important you keep a few crucial tips to maintain your child's health. With the help of these tips, you can inculcate crucial habits in your child's lifestyle.

In today's times, health problems like diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure are not restricted to adults, but have become a common phenomenon among children too. The main culprit for this can be attributed to their inclination towards fast food and lack of activity. Kids love to gorge on fast foods like burgers, pizzas, etc., and with the introduction of video games and a host of interesting programs on television, they are more than happy to watch television instead of playing outdoor games.

Due to this lack of activity and no control on the food they eat, many children suffer from the problem of obesity at a very young age, which further leads to other serious diseases or illnesses. Hence, it becomes the responsibility of the parents to teach children important ways to remain healthy.

Healthy Tips for Your Children

The three most important factors that are necessary for the kids to remain healthy include:

  • A healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Proper rest

Habits we learn during our childhood stay with us throughout our life; it is thus necessary that parents teach these three factors to children as soon as possible. However, you do not need to force them to learn these habits; set an example for them by following these things yourself. Let us look at each factor in detail.

Nutrition for a Healthy Diet
At a very young age itself, teach the kids to eat all types of food, like fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, dairy products, etc. Their meals should be divided into five or six small meals throughout the day, rather than just three meals. Cultivate the habit of eating breakfast as it is said to be the most important meal of the day. Eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast helps their body to develop energy for the physical as well mental activities of the day.

Parents should also see to it that children have a healthy lunch while they are at school. Though there are many schools which provide lunch, its nutritious value is a topic of controversy. Hence, it will be best to pack them foods that are high in vitamins and minerals. Other than lunch, also make sure that you provide them with a healthy after school snack, as this is a time where they are likely to indulge in junk food. Dried and fresh fruits, yogurt, cereal bars, etc., are good choices for a healthy snack. Next comes the dinner, or evening meal, which should be converted to time spent with the family. Eating together at least once in a day will help the parents interact with their children and also to keep control on their eating habits. Talking to them about the nutritional facts of healthy foods is a good way of instilling healthy food habits in children. Though too much of junk food does harm a child's body, there is no need to restrict it completely.

Fitness and Exercise
Indulging in daily outdoor games with friends is more than enough physical exercise for children. Parents should see to it that their kids do not spend their entire time in front of the television or playing video games. They should encourage them to take part in sports and other physical activities like dancing, etc., so that their body gets the required exercise. Arranging games for them and their friends regularly at home, in which they have to run around and play, is a good idea. On weekends, take them out walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling, at least for an hour, and you'll be preventing childhood obesity.

Health and Proper Rest
Rest and sleep are two important factors to keep children healthy. Children require 9-13 hours of sleep, depending on their age group. Lack of sleep in children can cause problems like lack of attention at school, feeling sleepy during the day, poor academic performance, etc. Hence, parents must ensure that their children receive sufficient sleep.

Other than these tips, it is important to teach kids proper hygiene rules like regular washing of hands, brushing their teeth, etc., so that they are not affected by infections. Explain the importance of eating the right food and exercising to your kids. Remember, by doing this you are not only providing them a hale and hearty childhood, but also ensuring a healthy future.

Why Homeopathy Is Best Applied in Childhood?

Homeopathy is a natural and mild form of medication. The remedies are natural substances, which have been diluted and potentized. Homeopathic medicines are best applied during childhood and work very effectively with children. A child's self-defense or immunity gets stimulated naturally towards a healthier state without any kind of side effects. Homeopathic remedies are very safe, effective and mild. They are especially effective for children, on the grounds that the remedies work by stimulating vitality of a child's body. Fever:

  1. Aconite is an effective homeopathic remedy for treating sudden fever. The child's skin is likely to be hot, and the temperature of the cheeks may differ.
  2. Ferrum Phosphoricum is used for treating fever that occurs due to inflammatory problems. This kind of fever gives you pale, red cheeks.

Irritability and restlessness:

  1. Passiflora is an ideal homeopathic relaxant for children.
  2. Avena Sativa is used when a child cannot sleep due to restlessness.
  3. Kali Phosphorica treats restlessness in children occurring because of over stimulation.
  4. Magnesia Phosphorica and Natrum Phosphoricum are other homeopathic medicines, which act as relaxants.

Cough and Cold:

  1. Ipecac is the best homeopathic remedy for constant coughing along with nausea.
  2. Aconitum Napellus is used when a child wakes up from sleep with a dry, hoarse cough.
  3. Spongia Tosta cures cold, croup and cough which start from the throat.
  4. Antimonium Tartaricum is the homeopathic medicine used when mucous accumulates in the chest, giving rise to coughing.

Homeopathy is best applied in childhood as a child is at risk of developing a number of diseases. A child's body is delicate and much more sensitive than adults and is prone to getting affected easily. Moreover, homeopathy is natural and is the safest form of medicine for children.

My son is14 years old and still he has problem of bed wetting what should I do for him.

MD - Homeopathy
Pediatrician, Mumbai
You can start with first restriction of any liquid intake 2hrs before bed time. He has to be trained daily by telling him to get up at night as the alarm rings. This will train his brain as alarm techniques really work very well to control bed wetting and can also start with bladder exercises to tone the bladder muscles.

My daughter who is 2.5 years old put thread in her nose but no thread found by doctor in basic checkup
what will we do?
Small objects like threads will not stay in the nose for long period. They usually come out while blowing. If the doctor has confirmed it's absence you can ignore. If any blood starts coming from that nose better you show to another ent surgeon.
