Blocked Nose - Causes And Remedies!

Blocked Nose - Causes And Remedies!

A blocked nose is not only annoying, but extremely discomforting. Several reasons can be held responsible for it and common cold is certainly not the only one. Some other reasons include:

  1. Flu
  2. Allergy
  3. Sinus

Therefore, the remedial measures for blocked nose vary, depending on the cause that led to it. Some of the ways by which you can redress this problem are:

  1. Use a humidifier: Sinusitis is often held responsible for a clogged nose, a condition that is almost always accompanied by severe pain. In such a situation, placing a humidifier in a room proves to be extremely beneficial. This machine treats blocked nose by converting the water to moisture. This fills up the room and significantly increases the humidity of the room. Therefore, when you breathe, the humid air soothes the inflamed blood vessels in the nose and helps you to breathe properly.
  2. Take a hot shower: When you find it difficult to breathe, a quick hot shower can go a long way in curing the discomfort. The logic that operates is the steam generated from the hot shower thins the mucus and also considerably reduces the inflammation in the nose, allowing you to breathe normally.
  3. Drink lots of water: Though the suggestion may seem incredible, drinking water actually helps in unblocking that blocked nose. When you drink a lot of water, the mucus in the nostrils is thinned, at the same time it pushes back the accumulated fluids, thereby curbing the condition of blocked nose.
  4. Using a saline spray: This is one of the most ancient and trusted ways of treating blocked nose. By administering a saline or a nasal spray, the moisture in your nostrils increases and radically diminishes the inflammation.
  5. Use warm compresses: Using a warm compress has been the most reliable form of medication in times of high temperature and also at times of blocked nose. The compress that was dipped in hot water, when placed on the nose and forehead helps to unblock the nasal passages. The soothing effect of the warm compresses reduces the inflammation and facilitates the process of breathing. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ent Specialist.

My father aged 86 yrs gets dizziness sometimes and had a fall at home last week. For the last three yrs. He has light bp and sugar which is being monitored. We took a ct scan yesterday and the report which is other wise normal says there is mild chronic ischemic changes in bilateral periventricular regions. Please let me know if this is the cause for his giddiness and whether he can be treated with only medicines because of his age.

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
The ct scan report is ok for his age. Ask him to use a stick while walking, keep some light on in his bedroom, so that when he wakes up to go and relieve himself the room is not dark. Keep his bp and sugar close to normal. Regards

It seems it is one type of snorring. Snoring: Snoring is mainly due to Vibration of Pharyngeal parts mainly soft palate parapharyngeal bands base of tongue, Adenoids and polyps in nose etc and also Deviated nasal septum plays the role. It is better to Go for sleep study test and Endoscopy of Nose and Throat in Awake and sleeping pt. Also MRI during sleep helps to come to Diagnosis. Sleep Ap machine can help the pt . Also surgery of Nasal polyp, Deviated Nasal Septum, Tonsils and Adenoids, Soft palate and Base tongue can help to cure or reduce the Snoring….

This is called otitis externa which causes ear discharge. It is due to sensitive ear. If water, shampoo, soap, hairspray, etc, get into your ears, they may may cause irritation or itch. This may cause you to scratch or poke the ear. This can damage the skin in the ear canal and cause inflammation. Inflamed skin can quickly become infected. A vicious circle may then develop. The inflammation and infection cause more itch, you then scratch which makes things worse, etc. So, despite treatment, the infection may continue if you continue to poke or scratch your ear. Therefore: Try not to scratch or poke the ear canal with fingers, cotton wool buds, towels, etc. Do not clean the ear canal with cotton buds. They may scratch and irritate, and push wax or dirt further into the ear. The ear cleans itself and bits of wax will fall out now and then. Try not to let soap or shampoo get into your ear canal. You can do this when you have a shower, by placing a piece of cotton wool coated in soft white paraffin (eg, Vaseline®) into the outer ear. Do not use corners of towels or cotton buds to dry any water that does get into the ear canal. This will push things further in. Let the ear dry naturally. When you swim try to keep your ears dry. You can do this by wearing a tightly fitting cap that covers the ears. Some swimmers use silicone rubber earplugs but only use them if they do not irritate the skin in your ear canal.

The most common cause for this is acid reflux. This can be treated with anti-reflux medications & dietary changes. Dietary recommendations- 1. Avoid binge eating. Take small frequent meals 2.Avoid oily , spicy food 3. Cut down on tea, coffee 4. Maintain a gap of atleast 2 hrs between your meals & lying down Consult an ENT surgeon for an examination to ascertain the cause.
