Lybrate-user, there are equally good sources of calcium -- greens and beans. And milk is harming people more than it is doing any good. There are enough medical published studies - supporting the point of view you expressed that milk may be harming people and may be causing us to lose bones! shocking as it may sound -- this is what the science does say!

Hi doc I want to shed body fat not body weight. So how can I achieve this. please hlp.

Hi doc I want to shed body fat not body weight. So how can I achieve this. please hlp.
Hi lybrate-user, very appropriate and right thinking there. First things first -- at 165 cm height your normal weight could be between 63 to 67 kg, while you are presently at 60 kg of body weight and it is my guess that probably you will not have excessive fat in the body. To determine how much fat you do have, you must go for bca - body composition analysis - which will tell the percent of fat, of lean mass and of water in your body. Should you be found to have excessive fat -- though again I doubt if you would actually be found to have excessive fat -- then the best strategy for you would be to: 1 go for low fat, high protein and adequate diet 2 and start gymming / lifting weights the idea is to bring fat down in your body - but not at the cost of total body weight -- and to add muscle and bone mass to your body. Best wishes.

I want to loose weight . I have done all types of diet plans still I didn't find any difference.

I want to loose weight . I have done all types of diet plans still I didn't find any difference.
Dear lybrate-user, there are diets and then there are more diets. And if you were to google you would probably find more than 100 different diets promising weight loss! yet, the world at large is getting heavier and fatter. The problem lies with modern highly refined, processed, high calorie density and low nutrient density foods -- coupled with a lifestyle that entails lesser or negligible calorie burning by way of activity and exercise. Stick to plant based whole foods: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, grams and lentils. Shun animal foods and ditch dairy. And you will probably see your weight getting corrected. A little moderate activity -- as little as 30 min of brisk walk a day -would further help you trim your weight down. Best wishes.

Ms. Lybrate-user, at a height of 163 cm, your present weight of 73 kg would be approx 6 to 7 kg more than the desired healthy weight. What is missing from the story is the weight gain profile -- how much have you gained in past 6 to 8 months -- and what used to be your least adult weight between the ages of 20 and 24 years. Please understand that generic guidelines for any weight loss attempt would be: to stick to plant based natural whole foods - whole grains, lots of vegetables, fruits, lentils, beans, grams. Though you are a vegetarian yet let me repeat that it is a good policy in general to stay away from animal foods, fried foods, processed foods, restaurant foods, shakes and juices, sweets, nuts and seeds for sometime, oils and fats, sauces etc. It shall help immensely to increase your activity levels -- walking, jogging, swimming, little playing games say badminton etc. Weight loss should be slow, supervised, scientific, and sustainable. More damaging would be to lose fast and then to regain the lost weight. Changing diet and lifestyle to healthier ones and to stick to these for the rest of your life is what I would strongly suggest. As you will be able to avoid yo yo -ing of weight in the coming years. Best wishes.

Hi lybrate-user, while one can understand the eagerness with a youngster such as yourself to lose 10 kg in 2 months and while this is possible too. In the present case however, what is more important is first to know the time profile of your weight gain. The reasons for the weight gain. And the body composition analysis to know the fat percentage in your body. Please understand that generic guidelines for any weight loss attempt would be: to stick to plant based natural whole foods - whole grains, lots of vegetables, fruits, lentils, beans, grams. Shun animal foods, fried foods, processed foods, restaurant foods, shakes and juices, sweets, nuts and seeds for sometime, oils and fats, sauces etc. Increase your activity levels -- walking, jogging, swimming, little playing games say badminton etc. More than 5 to 6 kg weight loss per month would be undesirable though. Weight loss should be slow, supervised, scientific, and sustained. More damaging would be to lose fast and then to regain the lost weight. Changing diet and lifestyle to healthier ones and to stick to these for the rest of your life is what I would strongly suggest. As you will be able to avoid yo yoing of weight in the coming years. Best wishes.

Dear lybrate-user, a weight of 135 kg at a height of 180 cm is way too much of weight -- at least 50 kg more than the normal for this height as you should have been between 78 to 84 / 85 kg. There must be some strong underlying reason for this excessive weight: wrong eatings and / or nil activity and / or hormonal deviations and / or genetic factor and / or lifestyle behavioural factors including perhaps alcoholism etc. The generic guideline here is: to stick to plant based natural whole foods - whole grains, lots of vegetables, fruits, lentils, beans, grams. Shun animal foods, fried foods, processed foods, restaurant foods, shakes and juices, sweets, nuts and seeds for sometime, oils and fats, sauces etc. Increase your activity levels -- walking, jogging, swimming, little playing games say badminton etc. You must get medical check up done --- yours is almost extreme obesity and may require immediate medical intervention. Best wishes.

At 5 ft 3 in, and at your age, this present weight of yours is not overweight at all -- normal for this height would be between 55 and 58 / 59 kg. However, if you have gained fat in the body or gained inches - say around the tummy - then your concerns are understandable. The approach then should be to increase activity -- including light weights and / or little gymming - to increase muscle mass and to strengthen bones -- and to convert fat into lean mass in the body -- along with general low fat, adequate proteins and carbs diet -- mostly from plant origin which will have enough fiber, vitamins and minerals naturally in the foods. Best wishes.

I tried many weight loss methods but nothing seems to work out. I did gym, dieting, took fat burners, homeopathy but nothing works. I need to know if there is any way for weight loss or am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Dear lybrate-user, weight gain can be due to multiple reasons and body disorders and similarly for weight loss one has to try many things: 1 negative calorie balance - by eating less and spending more calories 2 going on to low calorie dense foods 3 shunning processed / packaged / ready to eat / preserved foods 4 using pre and pro biotics to set gut bacteria right. 5 controlling stress - -as cortisol leads to weight gain 6 getting adequate good quality sleep - sleep deprivation is one of the main reasons for hormones to go haywire and weight to creep up in the body. 7 getting whole body check up for any hormonal abnormality 8 accounting for hereditary factors. Best wishes.

My father has been recently diagnosed with diabetes. What is your advice for him?

DMM, MBBS

My father has been recently diagnosed with diabetes. What is your advice for him?
Lybrate-user gadge, this is a very general query. For me to guide anyone about diabetes -- more details about the person's height, weight, bp, lipids, dietary and lifestyle habits, other blood tests, etc are required. Stick to plant based whole foods -- such as vegetables, whole grains, lentils and beans and grams and fruits. And increase the level of physical activity -- say at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate activity per day for at least 4 to 5 days a week is what is good for him. Cut down on fats and oils, fried foods, processed foods, restaurant foods, sweets, sugared beverages. Best wishes,

While you are not excessively overweight (56 kg and 150 cm), perhaps you have more of fat in the body and then we would like to know more about your specific diet and lifestyle details to be able to help you further. This does seem like pcos - which is being seen in a very high percentage of young ladies (as high as 35 %) of young urban girls and 50 to 80 % of such people do have excessive body weight and fat associated too. Yes, this can be helped -- but we need to investigate more of your particular situation. Best wishes

Are the chances of B.P.is more in diabetic patients. What should be the normal range of B.P. In 60 age old.

Are the chances of B.P.is more in diabetic patients. What should be the normal range of B.P. In 60 age old.
Mr. Lybrate-user, that bp and diabetes are found together in cases of weight gain and abdominal fat gain is known but it is not that they are not found individually independent of each other. Having them together along with weight gain / abdominal fat gain and having disturbed lipids would qualify a person to be labelled as metabolic syndrome. Yes, there are other complications and not only the risk of heart problems and stroke and kidney diseases go up having these two together, the problems get compounded and seriously hamper the quality of life for the sufferer. The dietary and lifestyle measures to control these and to avoid attendant complications are more or less overlapping: go for plant based whole foods + moderate level of daily activity + avoid processed foods, packaged foods, animal foods, restaurant foods. Try meditation and yoga and relaxation exercises. They do bring good benefits. Best wishes,

Hi lybrate-user, certainly at your age and with your height - you should have been within 70 kg of body weight and at 80 kg that would mean roughly 10 kg more than normal weight. Now the generic prescription would be to have lower caloric diets and to increase your activity to burn more calories each day - but then everyone knows that and still people can not control their weight. We need to learn more about your diet, activity, medical, family history to be able to guide you properly. For now: stick to plant based whole foods: vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lentils and beans and shun all processed, packaged, fast and junk foods. Best wishes,
