Abdominal Stones
Abdominal Stones

Hi,

I am Dr. Rajeev Seth, Laparoscopic Surgeon and I would like to draw your attention to the fact that when we talk of stones in the abdomen are of 2 types: gallbladder stones & kidney stones. Surgically these stones are of 2 different organs. Gallbladder and kidney are 2 different organs where the formation of the stones takes place because of different reasons. Their treatment is entirely different. So, it should be considered as 2 different entities. When we talk of gallbladder stones, the definitive treatment is surgery. Though we do prescribe medicines, anti-biotics they are as a stop-gap arrangement.

The definitive treatment remains, the removal of stones along with the gallbladder which is done and the procedure is called laparoscopic mastectomy. Whereas we talk of kidney stones, the treatment in majority cases is conservative. That means we only need to give medicines for subsiding the pain And rest nature takes care of the stones by itself. Close to 90% of the stones either gets dissolved or pass out in due course of time. Therefore, we don't need to treat them surgically. It is only 10% of the stones which become very large in size or get obstructed in the ureter or lead to persistent pain, hematuria, are the ones which need surgical attention. Therefore, whenever you come across any near one or dear one across, says he has a stone, do categorize them either as gallbladder stones or kidney stones and seek treatment accordingly.

Thank You!
