Enlarged Breasts in Men(Gynecomastia ) - Know Its Surgical Treatment!

Enlarged Breasts in Men(Gynecomastia ) - Know Its Surgical Treatment!

Swollen breast tissues in men or boys caused by hormonal (testosterone and estrogen) imbalances is called gynecomastia. Both breasts or one breast, can be affected by gynecomastia. At any point in life, from birth to puberty, even in adulthood, you might develop gynecomastia. Most of the times, gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances, but there might be some underlying causes as well.
Gynecomastia is normally not a serious condition, but it can be difficult to deal with the pain and embarrassment.

It can be cured with surgery or medication, if it doesn't go away on its own.

Symptoms and signs of gynecomastia include:

  • Enlarged glands in the breast tissue
  • Tenderness in the breast

The causes that trigger gynecomastia include:

  1. Hormonal changes: Testosterone and estrogen control the sexual development in men and women respectively. Estrogen is not a hormone that only women produce; men produce it too. When the production of testosterone and estrogen are thrown out of balance, gynecomastia occurs.
  2. Medication: Certain medications such as anabolic steroids, androgens, HIV/AIDS medicines, antibiotics and chemotherapy can cause gynecomastia.
  3. Drugs and alcohol: Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines, heroin and methadone cause gynecomastia.
  4. Health condition: Certain factors, such as aging, hypogonadism (hormonal disorder), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), tumors, kidney failure, cirrhosis, liver failure, malnutrition and starvation can lead to gynecomastia.
  5. Herbal products: Essential oils derived from plants such as lavender or tea tree, used in lotions or shampoos, have weak estrogenic actives. They have been said to cause gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia can be cured either with medication or surgery. Surgical options for gynecomastia are, however, limited.

Treatment

There is no definitive medical treatment. The main answer for Gynecomastia is -SURGERY. It is a daycare procedure in most situations. It is done by a Surgeon, usually, a Plastic surgeon does a better job.

Anesthesia- Either Local or General anesthesia is given to make it painless.

Procedure-Through a small incision in the areola, the swelling is removed by both Liposuction of the Fat part and Excision (removal) for Breast gland part. As the incision is through the areola, the final scar is hardly visible. In extensive swellings, skin also needs to be removed, where in a scar around the areola border is visible.

Recovery- usually can go back to work in 2-3 days time. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

I am having a male breast since last 3 or more than 3 years. I am doing workout since 4 months. But I only reduced 1 inch of my chest fat. Kindly help me out.

Male breast or gynecomastia reduction. Is one of the most frequently performed office surgeries and we are the pioneers in central India since last 30 years. To the best of our knowledge no medicines or creams work to decrease the breast Size. Gynecomastia is treatable only by surgery. There is no medical treatment. It is a one day out patient surgery with very gratifying results. It boosts self esteem also. The Dr. Can examine and tell you what is the problem, gynecomastia has a breast tissue and a fat component. No one wants surgery unless it is necessary. There is no medication which can give the results. Surgery is the only answer. It can be a day care surgery or 1 day hospital stay. There is no bed rest but 3-5 days are required for recovery and 10 days for full recovery. In 3 weeks you can go the the Gym. Gynacomastia is not a disease but excess response to hormones. If it does not bother you you don't have to get it removed. As long as the Breast size is big it is taken as Gynacomastia which could be because of More fat or More Breast tissue or a mixture of the two. The surgery is almost painless because there are enough medications to keep the pain under control. We need to examine the patient to know what is wanted and what can be done and to work out how much, when, where, etc

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery (BAMS)

Hello- The most common cause of gynecomastia (male breast) is changes in the levels of hormones androgens and estrogens. This can happen due to a variety of reasons including puberty, age, hypogonadism, low testosterone (male hormone), hyperthyroidism, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, chronic liver disease, exposure to pollutants, kidney failure, use of marijuana, excess alcohol consumption, malnutrition, and side effects of certain medications. Being overweight can also add to the problem. Many men find it really tough to cope with the condition and opt for medication or even surgery. Ayurvedic medicine offers complete cure of gynecomastia. It is worth noting that in recent years, medicine has made great progress in this field. So, if you looking for a permanent solution for your male breasts, yes it is possible with Ayurveda. Surgery can be avoided.

Treating Enlarged Breasts In Men(gynecomastia) With Surgery!

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, DNB, MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Treating Enlarged Breasts In Men(gynecomastia) With Surgery!

Most men, about 60%, see some development of breast tissue in their lifetime. This growth could be round, symmetrical and occurs bilaterally. This growth of breast tissue in males is medically known as gynecomastia.

Causes:

  • The most common cause is an imbalance between the oestrogen and androgens, with excessive oestrogens leading to the growth of breast tissue.
  • Excessive use of anabolic steroids
  • Obesity
  • Unknown reasons

It can affect men of all ages, and if this presents as a serious problem, then surgery is the most definitive form of treatment.

Surgical options: There are two major options available for correcting gynecomastia – liposuction and excisive surgery.

Liposuction:

  • Done either under local sedation or under general anaesthesia depending on the extent of the tissue proliferation
  • A small incision is made either in the armpit or around the areola
  • Excessive fat tissue and breast gland tissue are suctioned out
  • The chest contour also is altered at the same time, if desirable
  • Post-surgery, the person is made to wear a compression garment for the first few days
  • This helps in keeping the tissue in place and also helps reduce swelling
  • Healing takes about a couple of weeks’ time, depending on the person’s overall health status and the extent of surgery.

Excisive surgery:

  • This is done when the extent of gynecomastia is more severe
  • These people would have sagging, stretched skin around the breast area
  • More amount of fat and glandular tissue can be removed through excision
  • This is more often done under general anaesthesia
  • The incision is often done around the areala (dark portion around the nipple) so it is concealed or along the natural creases which are formed due to excessive breast tissue
  • Excessive breast tissue is removed and the incisions are closed
  • There could be swelling, pain, bruising, and higher chances of post-surgical infections
  • Recovery will take about ten days to two weeks
  • Refraining from exercise is often advised for up to 2 weeks

Benefits:

  • Restore a masculine appearance
  • Shorter surgery
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal or invisible scars
  • Almost immediate results that can be dramatic
  • Improved confidence and self-image

After the surgery:

  • Surgery is definitely a sure way to remove the male breast tissue, it is almost a permanent treatment for this condition.
  • It is very important to get a trained, experienced surgeon for the procedure
  • It is important to follow post-op instructions including pain management, infection control, and recovery
  • If it was caused by use of steroids or obesity, lifestyle modification is essential to prevent recurrence

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, The best treatment to treat Gynecomastia is surgery, where excess fat is removed which is followed by removal of breast tissue or glands. For best results VASER liposuction can be used to remove the excess fat. Regards,

Hi, Please suggest Can gynecomastia treat naturally no need of going for surgery.

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Hello. Few times the gynecosmastia is a result of underlying diseases or medications. In such occurences non surgical treatment will give good results. In other cases gynecosmastia is treated by the surgery, either gland excsision only or by liposuction. Conservative methods usually do not give complete results or satisfaction.

Hi, My friend has male breast his chest has come out so what to do to reduce it please suggest something for that?

MCh - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon, Bangalore
Hello sir. Definitely he can go for the surgery. The liposuction with gland excision will give him the best result for gynecomastia treatment. The surgeon will go for the surgery only after ruling out other underlying factors. It again depends upon the grade of gynecomastia he is having and the associated factors. Cost again depends upon the same factors. You can text me with the pictures to know anything more online.

I can see increase in my chest size and I feel very discomfort to have man boobs, I masturbate 4-5 times a week and these days I am avoiding my masturbation Due to this man boobs, and Is that the masturbation a cause for that or Does stopping dips/pull ups exercise which I used to do causes boobs? Pls suggest me a natural way to get rid off these.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Dear Lybrate User, Male human beings posses nipples. But unlike female human beings the mammary glands under the nipples are missing in male human beings. Male boobs/Gynaecomastia develops due to an increase of the ratio of the Oestrogen & Androgen Hormones. It is created due to endocrine disturbances. Please carry out the following blood tests:- 1) Liver Function Test 2) Serum Creatinine Level 3) Serum T3, T4, TSH Level 4) Serum Testosterone Level 5) Serum Estradiol Level 6) Serum LH & FSH Level. Conduct the blood test as soon as possible because the results are necessary to diagnose the proper cause behind your problem. Revert back with the results & consult me privately via Lybrate. In the mean-time join a gym and do chest exercise to tone up your chest muscles. Also there is a home therapy for you. You must have seen earthen pots (MATKI). You need to break one such matki & choose two fragments from the debris each having dimension around 4 inches x 3 inches. Wash those fragments in water & keep those fragments under sunlight to get heated for at least 8 hours. After 8 hours hold those hot fragments over both of your nipples for 30 minutes. Do not dispose the fragments as you need to repeat the process daily. Kindly remember treatment for your problem cannot be started unless the proper underlying cause is detected. So conduct the aforesaid test as soon as possible & consult me privately via Lybrate with those blood test reports.

Hi, Please get thyroid test done at the earliest. Also, begin a healthy routine and correct a lot of lifestyle habits. Ensure you are doing 60 minutes of exercise daily and starting with healthy eating habits. 75 is not too heavy and its much easier to reduce now if you work towards it. So please do not delay and start with correcting your eating habits. 1. Focus on clean eating. Avoid all sugary, salted, junk, fried and processed foods. Always opt for fruits as snacks. 2. Stop bakery or maida based foods such as breads or biscuits. Include a lot of vegetables in your lunch and dinner. 3. Bring dinner early. Eat at least 2-3 hours before your sleep and eat light dinner. Practice for 3 days and your body will get used to it. Also drink 3-3.5 liters of water daily. Its definitely possible to bring down the weight if you start working on it NOW! All the best :-)

What is the cure for pseudogynecomastia? Please some one help me. I'm suffering from it for the past 3-4 years. I'm a 15 year old boy. Weight- 76 kgs. Please help.

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Haldwani
Hello- Since it is pseudo and not actual gynecomastia, it is due to fat abnormality and not due to hormonal disturbance (which occurs in gynecomastia). 1)Creating a fat deficit is one of the fundamental requirements to lose chest fat or pseudogynecomastia. A fat deficit means a reduction in the amount of fat you take through food on a given day when compared to the amount of fat your body needs for that day. When you create a fat deficit, the body is then forced to burn off fat that is already stored for energy. 2)Workouts to lose chest fat is another way to get rid of pseudogynecomastia and there are specific workouts that are aimed at focusing on pectoral fat. Workouts to lose chest fat when done along with a supplement custom developed to burn off chest fat is one of the most effective strategy to get rid of chest fat.
