You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. At least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. Everything You Need To Know About Heart Pacemaker

If you had to choose between living a life of restrictions and a life of freedom, you'd choose the latter right? This is a decision most patients have to take when diagnosed with heart disease. Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. You have to continue the anti TB treatment till it is completely cured, which may be 6 to 9 months. To reduce general weakness take extra proteis in your day to day diet. If you can consume eggs then add 3 eggs per day (either boilde or fried), take a balanced diet, increase intake of green leafy vegetables and salads. Also exercise regularly to build muscle strength. Plus get your blood checked to see if you have anemia and also diabetes. Thanks.

Hi, Follow these tips to increase your blood pressure: 1. Increase intake of salt by adding salt to curds rice and taking pickles along with curds rice. 2. Drink plenty of fluids like Nimbu pani, tender coconut, water, buttermilk, fresh fruit juices,etc. 3.Drink hot coffee or tea when you feel dizzy. 4. Take sound sleep for 7-8 hours at night. 5. If she is suffering from increased heartrate (tachycardia with palpitation) then you should consult a cardiologist and get her tested for Blood pressure, ECG, ECho cardiography, Lipid profile etc. After that only a proper diagnosis and based on that a proper treatment can be advised. Well heart rate varies between 60-100. But below 40 and above 100 is a medical condition. Below 60 is normal in active people who do regular exercise. Patient who are taking beta blockers. If heart rate low then you need proper homeopathic treatment.

I'm a 26-year old woman and I'd need some advice regarding my QT values. If I understand correctly, QTc intervals of less than 440 Ms. are considered to be normal, whereas QTc intervals of 440 Ms. to 460 Ms. in men and 440 Ms. to 470 Ms. in women are considered borderline. A couple of days ago I had an ECG. My QT/QTc was 412/447 Ms. at a heart rate of 71 bpm. Is this something to worry about (long QT syndrome)? I've been suffering from PVCs every day for over a year, but my heart should be structurally fine according to an echocardiogram. During the past few months I have had short bursts of an accelerated heartbeat with fluttering sensation and sometimes irregular heartbeat. I've decided to have 24-hour Holter monitoring again, just in case.

Hi lybrate-user, your qtc is within normal limits for women. But in patients who have QT prolongation, this at times gets precipitated by certain triggers. Since you have mentioned that you are having PVC's, then few things become important - What is the percentage of PVC load you have in 24 hrs (the holter will tell you that) 2. What is the cause of these PVC and whether the fluttering feeling you are experience is some abnormal rhythm. A holter will be able to tell this only if these things happen during the time of holter monitoring. A better way can Electrophysiology study, where we do detailed study of your heart's conduction system and see if at all any abnormal beats or rhythms are coming and where they are coming from and give you a definitive answer. So, you should consult a cardiac electrophysiologist with your present and past ECG and holter reports.

I always feel chest pain. I got my ECG, eco ,last year. It was ok. Then I consult a psychiatrist. He gave me vilano40. And mezlap0. 25 Sos. But as I always feel pain, anxiety.i too scare too take both medicine at a time. Is my heart ok. Is medicine will save my heart. Can I take sos medicine during taking vilano40 .Please advice. Hello lybrate-user ,if you have any daudht you can do advance investigation like stress test, but if it is also negative, not to be worried, it may be due to anxiety or tension n stress n if reason is only anxiety, don't take allopathic, no solution for anxiety in allopathy so try another pathy.

Since you cannot exactly explain your symptoms/problem, it will be difficult for us to figure out what the problem is without knowing what is troubling you. The best thing to do would be to consult either a local internal medicine specialist or cardiologist, you can explain what you are feeling to them and they can advise you investigations based on that. It won't make any sense if some doctor suggests you a list of investigations without understanding what you need.

Since blood is part of the cardiovascular system, and diabetes is a condition in which the level of glucose in the blood is higher than normal, then is certainly some relationship between the two.

Diabetes and cardiovascular system diseases has been recognized to be closely related to each other due to the so-called insulin resistance syndrome or metabolic syndrome. Some examples of the commonly diagnosed cardiovascular disease are coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and other heart conditions.

Diabetes is considered a major risk factor in cardiovascular diseases. Other factors that contribute to the possibility of acquiring cardiovascular diseases in diabetic patients include hypertension, smoking, and dyslipidemia.

How Diabetes Causes Cardiovascular Problems?

  1. Hypertension: Hypertension in diabetes is considered a major contributor to the increase in mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Diabetic patients, especially those with Type 2, need to always have their blood pressure checked every visit to the doctor. Self-monitoring at home is also a must to maintain and control the rise of blood pressure. The American Diabetes Association recommends a target blood pressure of not more than 130/85 mm Hg to maintain a good level of blood pressure.
  2. Arteriosclerosis and Atherosclerosis: Arteriosclerosis is the stiffening or hardening of the artery walls while Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of the artery because of plaque build-up. Atherosclerosis is a form of hardening of the blood vessels/arteries, caused by fatty deposits and local tissue reaction in the walls of the arteries. Diabetes is a documented high risk factor for the development of both Atherosclerosis & Arteriosclerosis . Heart disease and stroke, arising mainly from the effects of atherosclerosis, account for 65 percent of deaths among diabetics.
  3. Hyperglycemia: Hyperglycemia means high (hyper) glucose (gly) in the blood (emia). Your body needs glucose to properly function. Your cells rely on glucose for energy. Hyperglycemia is a defining characteristic of diabetes, when the blood glucose level is too high because the body isn't properly using or doesn't make the hormone insulin. There is a growing recognition that diabetes belongs to a special category of risk factors because it markedly increases risk of CVD. This increase is partly the result of the pernicious effects of persistent hyperglycemia on the vasculature and partly due to the coexistence of other metabolic risk factors.
  4. Smoking: Smoking has been determined dangerous to our health. Studies show that smoking indeed increase risk of premature death and cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients.
  5. Atrial Fibrillation: Atrial Fibrillation means an irregular and rapid heart rate which can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other cardiac issues. Individuals with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation. This risk is higher among patients with a longer duration of treated diabetes and poorer glycemic control.

Individuals with insulin resistance or diabetes in combination with one or more of these risk factors are at even greater risk of heart disease or stroke. However, by managing their risk factors, patients with diabetes may avoid or delay the development of heart and blood vessel disease. Your health care provider will do periodic testing to assess whether you have developed any of these risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can ask a free question.

I am 21 years old. I don't do regular exercise. Earlier I used to do regular exercise. But now do to low BP I'm not able do exercise. I can't be much hectic otherwise I may fall unconscious. I have gap in periods of about 4-6 months. Ultrasounds are done. Required blood tests are done. All reports are normal. If I say about my food habits, it's not fixed and moreover I reside in hostel so can't have that much healthy food but have fresh juice.

Hi, I did my blood test and my cholesterol level has increased a lot. The LDL value is 176. Can you please suggest if I have to go for medication or I can lower it by doing exercise?

Go for diet control and exercise. you can take flex seed oil or fish oil capsule. Dont go for allopathic medicines as your LDL level is not too much high. It can be control by exercise and diet control.

I'm a 35 year old male, 5'7" 158lbs, very fit, extremely active and have no heart conditions other than PVCs. I have a history of anxiety and have had an echocardiogram, holter test. Nothing wrong except for panic attacks. That being said my cholesterol is not perfect and I go out of my way to try to eat right although I'm not perfect at it. That being said my diet is FAR superior to the avg American diet. My recent lipid panel had my HDL at 38, LDL at 136 and Triglycerides at 106. VDL at 21. My LDL often fluctuates between 105 - 140 between blood draws and my HLD often is between 38 and 44. I'm working like crazy to bring up my HDL and lower my LDL a bit more by adjusting diet with more nuts, avocados and fish. I'm just always worried I'll drop dead from a heart attack at a young age because I've read stories on the internet of perfectly healthy young people in their 30s having heart attacks because of major blockage. Should I be worried? Are my Cholesterol level numbers concerning at all? I thought doing anaerobic and weight exercises 5 times a week dramatically reduced people's risk of a heart attack. Also I have no known heart disease in the family.
