World Hepatitis Day - Tips To Help You Prevent Yourself!

World Hepatitis Day or WHD takes place every year on 28 July and it is designed to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and to influence real change. WHD, endorsed by the World Health Organization, unites patient organisations, governments, medical professionals, and civil society, as well as the public, to boost prevention measures for fighting viral hepatitis like vaccination.

In the simple terms, hepatitis means injury to your liver due to inflammation. There are five main types of hepatitis and the type that you are suffering from is determined by a laboratory test. All the five main types of hepatitis are caused by viruses. Out of the five, Hepatitis C and B are quite big. Globally, around 250 million people are affected by hepatitis C and 300 million people are estimated to be hepatitis B carriers.

Fact sheet on hepatitis

  1. Hepatitis A & E is caused by consuming contaminated water.
  2. Hepatitis B, C and D is transmitted through infected blood to blood contact.
  3. Hepatitis C is usually spread via direct contact with the blood of an infected person.
  4. The initial symptoms of hepatitis are the same as those of flu.
  5. Hepatitis can heal on its own causing no significant liver damage; however, if it progresses, it can cause extensive liver scarring and extensive damage of your liver.

Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, and these are hepatitis A, B and C. 

How do you safeguard yourself against infection from these three dangerous hepatitis viruses?

The most common cause of concer is that a lot of us who are infected with hepatitis, especially hepatitis B don’t know that we are. The biggest bulwark against hepatitis is periodic testing and vaccination. Vaccination is available for most hepatitis viruses including A and B, which tend to be extra virulent.

So, do take care and go for periodic testing. We are reiterating this because if you are infected with hepatitis B and are not treated you can develop serious problems of the liver, including liver cancer. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 people living with hepatitis B develop serious liver problems including liver cancer. Hepatitis B related liver cancer is a leading cause of fatality and getting tested for hepatitis can help you access life-saving treatments that can prevent serious liver damage.

Other ways to prevent hepatitis are
Hepatitis A

  1. Wash your hands with soap after using the toilet
  2. Only consume freshly-cooked food
  3. Only drink bottled or boiled water
  4. Only eat fruits that can be peeled. Don’t eat fruit that has been cut and kept
  5. Avoid eating raw vegetables
  6. Vaccinate yourself against hepatitis A if you travel a lot.

Hepatitis B

  1. Practice safe sex by using condoms
  2. Only use new syringes for injections
  3. Do not share toothbrushes, razors, or manicure instruments with others
  4. Vaccinate yourself against hepatitis B
  5. Take care while getting tattooed. Only use brand new tattoo needles. Also, ask for new needles during acupuncture treatments.

Hepatitis C

  1. Avoid sharing toothbrushes, razors, and manicure equipment
  2. Cover open wounds if you are infected
  3. Don’t share needles. Always ask for fresh needles.
  4. Use only well-sterilized equipment for acupuncture, piercing, and tattooing etc.
  5. Cut down on alcohol
  6. Do not share drug needles

You can go join a gym and learn the exercises which all help you to built your muscle tone .if possible try to get advice from a personal trainer in gym. You should concentrate more on strengthening exercises. And take more protein containing diets. To break that fatigue it is advisable to drink or eat protein and mineral food which would be a reservoir for you to store the energy.

Since 1st of ramzan I have lost 3 kg Wight, I am feeling good, my BP and sugar also normal, I just worried about Wight loss. Now I am 74 kg, please advise if need to visit doctor. Some times I feels giddiness.

If you have fasted during Ramadan, then probably you must have lost weight due to that. Wait for few days & see if you recover the lost weight.

Indian food is the best food. Not junk good like panipuri chat etc. Maintain your daily regimen. Daily yoga pranayam and surynamaskar early in the morning before sunrise will help you. Avoid food supplements and weight gainer medicine powders as it has side effects.

For weight gain in a healthy way, 1. Have soya milk, tofu. 2. Have 3 litres water daily. (70% body is made of water) 3. Have frequent meals comprising foods high in nutrient & energy density but low in volume. Ex, fruit juice, sugarcane juice, cheese p otato chicken sandwich, egg curry, rice/ atta maida roti with ghee, til chikki, dry fruits, premix, malt, soybean cutlets, fish fingers, stuffed parathas, banana, dates, mango. 4. Avoid water with or just before meals 5. Have 15 mins light walk before main meals to enhance appetite. 6. Have atta maida roti/ rice with ghee 7. Practice 30 mins strength exercises daily empty stomach. Consider getting a thyroid test done to rule out hyperthyroidism.

My gym instructor has advised me to take omega-3 capsules for strengthening the bones and joints. Should I pop in few just like that. Is it that simple. Any specifics I need to know before going in for these capsules?

Omega - 3 should be supplemented only if you don't have sufficient fat in your diet. If you take olive oil, flaxseeds, fish in your diet then there is no need to supplement.

I am working out regularly to get muscular I have protein shake just post workout. Its does help in building muscle but somehow I have reduced the quantity from three to two scoops now planning to have only one coz its not helping me reduce facial fat double chin or belly contrary I am feeling puffiness on face cheek bones. Can proteins shakes have negative effects like puffiness on face? I am into modelling I want to cut that out or can this be coz of age factor as I am now 37 previous also I have been taking shakes on and off but never experienced this but being in media I have to maintain anyhow as an actor for camera purposes face having fat tends to make you look older and actors do have slim faces at 50 plus also as we all know but it that possible without artificial support or synthetic stuff steroids and all I do not want to go on that track. I have started taking 30 ml aloe vera juice in warm water empty stomach in morning and pre meals apple cider vinegar 10 ml cup of water its a natural uric acid reducer I am told last year I faced higher uric acid levels so I started that. What is the possible way to cut facial fat or puffiness? I have even gone on boiled vegetable diet in dinner past few days which gives results in over all body just worried about facial fat its not decreasing only inspite of regular workout and alternate days cardio jogging 5-6 kms approx 45-55 minutes on treadmill trainers give the usual pattern do not eat carbs etc etc which all. I know for years as a workout person or should I get some test done can it be coz of some certain levels increased in body/blood of something I was 75 kg 5.8 inches reduced to 71.5 but what about the puffiness thats not reducing as per ratio of body weight so visually it does not seem to that I have reduced.

Hi there Completely understand your concern. AS YOU ARE IN SHOW BIZ. Coming to puffiness supplements uric acid levels. We need to do a detailed analysis like your daily routine eating habits Do you smoke or drink Is there water retention? But remember one thing if uric acid is more start drinking 3 to 4 litres water daily but never with food. Secondly stop proteins for time being and reduce uric acid level. Third cut down on salt intake (I need your detailed diet) cam you give me your diet for 3 days on private message so we can find out reason of puffiness. Also we can change exercise pattern and start with yoga and pranayam So do come back to me with answers we will surely crack your problem.

Oral medications are best avoided in pregnancy. So use 8-X shampoo as lotion to be applied or if you can get Keraglow-AD lotion (not shampoo, even that shall be good. You can try this exercise at your place- Sit straight on chair. Make sure foot is rested on the ground. Hold both the hands behind the head. Bend slowly forward using abdominal muscles. Straighten the back slowly and sit straight. Repeat the exercise 10 times.

Hi lybrate-user, first you should increase your calories and protein intake, don't skip major meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), eat 6 meals in a day. For good muscle, eat high protein diet like chicken, fish,eggs, paneer, soyabean, sprouts, curd etc, eat peanut butter, dried fruits, shakes etc do workout for 30 min /day for increase appetite.
