Fever is not considered medically significant until body temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C). Fever serves as one of the body's natural defenses against bacteria and viruses which cannot live at a higher temperatures..Also, the body's defense mechanisms seem to work more efficiently at a higher temperature -Fevers of 104 F (40 C) or more may be dangerous and demand immediate treatment The following medications may be used at home for mild fever : -Acetaminophen (dolo-650 mg) twice or thrice can be used to lower a fever . Aspirin should not be used in children during a viral illness. -Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes and donot overdress. Overdressing can cause the temperature to rise further. -Tepid water (85 F [30 C]) baths may help bring down a fever -The body should be cooled with a wet sponge. -Fever can cause dehydration.Drink plenty of fluids.Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich ones like mausami,Amla juice etc. -Take light and easily digestible home cooked meals .avoid outside food -Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water especially before meals, or after returning from a public places or using public transport. -Further therapy depends on the cause of fever like urinary infection/typhoid or malaria/dengue infection and the accompanying symptoms that need to be investigated and treated accordingly

Ways to prevent and stop nose bleeding

Ways to prevent and stop nose bleeding
Ways to prevent and stop nose bleeding

Nose bleeding happens because of presence of large amount of blood vessels in the nose and the reasons for nose bleeding are nose picking, low levels of Vitamin K, colds and allergies and nose membrane getting dry along with so many other reasons. But there are ways with the help of which it can be prevented and stopped.
Let’s first learn how it can be instantly stopped.
1. Sit comfortably: When your nose starts bleeding, you should sit in a comfortable position. Do not stand or lie down because in these positions, blood may pass on to your throat which could be harmful. Tilt your face forward and let a piece of cloth soak in all the blood.

2. Hold the nose: During nose bleeding, one should hold and pinch the nose for at least 10 minutes continuously. If it still doesn’t stop bleeding then hold it for 5-7 minutes more. Holding or pinching the nose is necessary because bleeding can stop if direct pressure is put on nose for a longer time.

3. Apply ice: Applying ice can be a great way of instantly stopping nose bleeding. Ice usually compresses and tightens the blood vessels because of which bleeding stops. Ice should preferably be applied on cheeks and nose. Alternatively, you can keep the ice in your mouth also for short intervals.

Nose bleeding can be prevented by taking the following measures :
1. Elevate the nose while resting. Take 2-3 pillows while sleeping.
2. Do not blow or scratch your nose forcefully.
3. Keep your blood pressure in control because it will help in preventing nose-bleeding to a great extent.
4. Avoid smoking because it delays the healing process.
5. Make sure the room you sleep in isn’t dry. Keep a check on humidity of your room.
6. Need to take special care in winters because the nose membrane gets dry mostly in winters.
7. Drink plenty of water and citrus food to keep your nose moist and avoid milk, wheat and fried food.
8. Do not overuse cold and allergy medicines.

Melasma : Facts You Should Know About it

MBBS, MD - Dermatology, F.C.P.S.(Skin & V.D)

Melasma : Facts You Should Know About it

Melasma is a type of tan or dark skin discoloration in which hyper pigmented patches appear on cheeks, nose, upper lip and forehead. It is also known as chloasma or the mask of pregnancy when it appears in pregnant women causing them to lose their proverbial glow. It is also common among women on the verge of menopause (Skin Changes After Menopause), or those taking patch or oral contraceptives. It also tends to appear in women who are taking medications for hormone replacement treatment. Melasma is more common among women than men with a whopping 90% of women getting it. Melasma is also seen in other parts of the body that is exposed to the sun.

While the discoloration doesn't do any physical harm, it may leave you feeling out of place and self conscious.

Though it isn't totally clear what causes this problem, the common pattern of the problem in women shows that estrogen and progesterone sensitivity are associated with the condition. Stress and thyroid disease is also known to trigger this condition as both problems lead to hormonal imbalances. Sun exposure is also one of the known causes of melasma as it triggers tanning. Ultraviolet rays also affect the cells responsible for pigments or melanocytes.

Because one of the causes of melasma is hormonal imbalance, it often rectifies itself when the root cause is addressed. For some women it disappears on its own. If this doesn't happen, the doctor may prescribe external creams to lighten the skin. External skin treatment like chemical peels, dermabrasion, and microdermabrasion are also suggested depending on the severity of the condition. These are common skin treatments that strip away the top layer which may lighten the dark patches. Though external treatments can improve the overall appearance, it doesn't guarantee that the dark patches won't resurface again if the underlying hormonal problem isn't resolved. A combination of external and internal treatment can help improve the skin quality and prevent reoccurrence to an extent. During the treatment procedure and afterwards, you'll also have to limit your sun exposure and wear sunscreen regularly.

If you visit a dermatologist, they may mostly use the wood lamp method (a method in which the skin is viewed under a specific light) to determine the depth of your melasma.

Some treatments like those with tretinoin, an acid, cannot be used done during pregnancy.

If you've tried all the above but are yet to find relief, you'll need to find coping mechanisms. You can use concealers and makeup to cover the patch. You'll also need to wear and SPF 30 sunscreen and a big hat that shades your face.

If the disease is affecting you psychologically and you feel self conscious get help from a local support group.

The most important part of skin managment is Sunscreen, sunscreen and sunscreen. STRICTLY AVOID STEROID CREAMS OR TRIPLE COMBINATION CREAMS like MELALITE COSMELITE AND MANY MORE. It will give quick results and then you will get sensitive skin, white patches or vitiligo type skin unwanted hairs over face, thin skin and telangiectasia etc and also u become addicted to these creams.

Always consult a qualified dermatologist.
