What Can Be The Reason Behind Radiating Pain In One Leg?

What Can Be The Reason Behind Radiating Pain In One Leg?

In recent times, there has been an upsurge in the instances of leg pain. People from all age groups, irrespective of their gender, are being affected. Needless to say, this painful and uncomfortable condition throws life in jeopardy and adversely affects and interfers with a person's daily activities. While the pain can be in both the legs, many people also suffer from severe radiating pain in one leg.

What causes radiating pain in one leg?
More than often, this kind of pain is triggered by nerve problem or disorder. If you experience a shooting pain that originates in the lower back and gradually radiates down to one of the legs (from the buttocks to the back of the leg), chances are you are experiencing sciatica.

In sciatica, the nerve affected is the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerves originate from the spinal nerves L4 to S3. From the lower back, the nerves (two sciatic nerves) extend downwards to the back of each leg. The sciatic nerves further divide into a tibial and peroneal nerve. These nerves are mostly responsible for the sensation and motor functions of the legs and the feet.

Sciatica can be an outcome of
The discs present between the vertebrae provides them with a much-needed cushion, preventing injury or damage. In case, of a degenerative disorder of the disc, the protective cushion gets affected resulting in the pain and associated symptoms.

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis: A medical condition where the spinal canal in the lumbar area narrows down, exerting pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Spondylolisthesis or a slip disc: The condition mostly affects the lumbar area (base of the spine) whereby there is slippage of one of the bones over the adjacent bone (the bone located just below it).

A muscle pull in the buttocks can also trigger sciatica and many times, a pregnant woman may also experience sciatica. The sciatic pain can be:

  1. Chronic sciatic pain: As the name suggests, chronic sciatic pain is intense and more severe, with the symptoms persisting for a longer time (more than three months). Arthritis, severe nerve damage or scarring (tissues) are often responsible for chronic sciatic pain.
  2. Acute sciatic pain: An injury to the nerves, muscles, spinal joints or discs can cause the pain. However, as instantly as the pain starts, the condition improves within days (at times weeks).

In addition to the radiating pain, there may be other symptoms associated with sciatica such as

  1. Difficulting in leg or foot movement.
  2. Weakness
  3. Sciatica can also trigger a pain in the back of the leg which aggravates when a person is in a sitting position
  4. Hip pain
  5. Numbness, and often a tingling or burning sensation radiating down the leg
  6. In some people, sciatica can cause a shooting pain (which worsens when a person tries to stand up)
  7. The pain (in some cases) can extend to the foot and toes

There can be many underlying factors responsible for the pain radiating to one leg. Neglecting the condition will only worsen the situation further. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Sports Injuries & Pain Related To Them - How Can It Be Managed?

How should you approach pain caused due to sports injuries?

Sports injuries can happen to any person who engages in sporting activities. These affect full-time athletes as well as those who partake in sports and exercising on an occasional basis. Most sports injuries are acute and affect the muscles and skeletal system. Usually, they are not chronic unless caused by a grave accident or left untreated.

The most common types of injuries caused due to sports are as follows:

Treatment of sports injuries depends on a number of factors such as the type of injury, part of the body affected, the intensity of the pain, and the patient's age and medical history.

Accordingly, the most common ways of approaching the pain caused by sports injuries are:

  1. Immediate remedies: Several quick aid, home remedies are used to treat pain that is caused by minor injuries to muscles, such as sprains and strains. It involves alleviation of pain through rest, using ice packs and hot water bags, wearing supports and elastic compression bandages.
  2. Medication: Many medicines such as painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills, creams and sprays effectively reduce pain caused by sports injuries. In extreme cases, morphine and codeine are also prescribed.
  3. Physical therapy: A number of injuries can be treated and cured through certain exercise and workout routines. These aim at stretching and strengthening the affected area to provide pain relief through increased flexibility and muscle activity.
  4. Injections: Various substances and chemical compounds can be injected into the injured area which works on the affected ligaments, tendons, and cartilage to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
  5. Surgical procedures: This is generally resorted to in case of damage to the skeleton in the form of broken bones and cracked ribs.
  6. Interventional Pain relieving procedures: These include regenerative or stem cell therapy, and neuromodulation techniques using radio frequency current. They may result in best results without any tissue cutting or damage. A pain specialist may be able to help you best in that case.

Devising the exact treatment method requires a thorough examination of the injury. Diagnosis can only be provided after taking into consideration the many factors that affect treatment. Pain In Middle Back - Common Factors That Can Lead To It!

Pain In Middle Back - Common Factors That Can Lead To It!

Back pain is something that affects many people all over the world. Persistent and chronic pain seems to be one of the most common complaints. Middle back pain is back pain that is felt in the thoracic vertebrae region, which is located between the base of the neck and top of the lumbar spine. The ribs attach to a long, flat bone in the middle of the chest called the sternum and wrap around the back. In case, there is a nerve around there is squeezed, disturbed, or injured, you are likely to feel pain in different spots where the nerve goes through, for example, your arms, legs, chest and the stomach.

Some of the most common causes of middle back pain are as follows:

  1. Middle back pain can happen as a consequence of injury or sudden damage or it can happen through strain or poor stance after some time.
  2. The most widely recognized reason for middle back pain seems to begin from soft tissue problems or muscular irritation. These can emerge from poor stance, lack of strength, prolonged sitting in front of a computer, utilizing a heavy backpack, overuse injuries, (for example, repetitive movement), or injury, (like a whiplash damage brought about by an auto crash or as a consequence of a sports injuries).
  3. The middle back is a moderately normal site for inflammatory, degenerative, metabolic, infective and neoplastic conditions.
  4. Middle back pain and its dysfunctions are connected with various conditions, for example, essential and optional osteoporosis (particularly vertebral cracks and hyperkyphosis emerging from vertebral bone loss), ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis and Scheuermann's infection.
  5. Muscle strain, overuse or damage to the muscles, tendons, and discs that are backing your spine can also cause middle back pain.
  6. Weight on the spinal nerves from specific issues, for example, a herniated disc.
  7. A fracture in one of the vertebrae can also cause pain in this region.
  8. Osteoarthritis created by the breakdown of ligament or cartilage that cushions the little joints in the spine.
  9. Myofascial pain that influences the connective tissue of a muscle or gathering of muscles.
  10. In uncommon cases, pain might be brought about by different issues, for example, gall bladder disease, cancer or an infection.
  11. Getting hit hard in the back can also cause chronic pain.
  12. Lift something too heavy may cause pain and a sudden pressure in this area.
  13. A compression fracture of the vertebra can also bring about intense or chronic pain in the middle back. The injury may bring about a fracture, however in ladies over age 50 without critical injury or somebody known to have osteoporosis, an unconstrained vertebral fracture is possible.

Other contributing factors to injury include lack of strength which can be treated by a Pain Management Specialist using non-surgical methods. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Knee Osteoarthritis and PRP Therapy - What Should You Know?

Knee Osteoarthritis and PRP Therapy - What Should You Know?

Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting the knee joints. This condition results from age related degeneration of joint cartilage and synovial fluid. This results in excessive stiffness, swelling, pain and decreased mobility due to loss of lubricant functions of joint cartilage.

Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis:

Treatment for knee osteoarthritis consists of anti inflammatory drugs, lifestyle modifications and knee exercises. In advanced stages where pain is severe or conservative therapy fails, replacement of knee joint is required. In many cases, knee replacement is not feasible or desired due to various reasons. For such cases, other treatment option is available in form of Platelet rich Plasma (PRP) injection in knee joint.

How is PRP therapy done?

The procedure involves drawing a sample of blood from the patient and then placing it in a Centrifuge machine which extracts the Platelet rich plasma (PRP) constituent from blood. The sample constitutes of platelets (blood cells) which consist of numerous healing and inflammatory chemicals. This PRP sample is injected in the knee joint under sterile precautions. This decreases inflammation, and promotes healing.

Benefits of PRP therapy:

  1. The body’s first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelets. Platelets carry cells, proteins, and other growth / healing factors that initiate repair and recruit stem cells. PRP therapy’s natural healing process intensifies the body’s efforts by delivering a higher concentration of platelets within the damaged joint. Research has shown PRP therapy to be very effective at relieving pain and returning patients to their normal activities. Both Ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair after PRP therapy, confirming the healing process.

  2. The need for knee replacement can also be greatly reduced by promoting repair of cartilage before joint damage becomes extensive. In fact PRP therapy works best when done in early stages of Knee Osteoarthritis.

  3. Relieves pain without the risks of surgery or general anesthesia.

  4. No hospital stay is required. The procedure is performed safely and takes approximately two hour including preparation and recovery time. In fact, most people return to their jobs or usual activities right after the procedure.

  5. Most patients require 2 to 3 sessions of knee PRP therapy.

Side effects of PRP Therapy:

The procedure is free of side effects when done by experienced pain specialists. Since the therapy involves injecting patient's own blood derivative, it is a safe procedure. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Throbbing Pain in Your Muscles - 7 Ways To Deal With It!

Throbbing Pain in Your Muscles - 7 Ways To Deal With It!

The musculoskeletal structure of your body is what enables you do any physical movement. The bones provide the solid structure while the muscles provide the strength and agility for all the necessary movements. However, muscles can be affected either due to internal problems within the body or due to wear and tear. Pain in the muscles can be quite debilitating and problematic.

Some of the more common methods to treat and deal with muscle pain are mentioned below.

  1. Correct electrolyte imbalances in your daily food intake: Electrolytes are important minerals required in your body such as potassium or magnesium. A lack of these minerals within the body will cause muscle pain including cramps and spasms. These could be caused due to:
    • Strenuous exercising or physical activity such as playing sports
    • High blood pressure
    • The onset of the menstrual cycles
    • Dehydration
    • An imbalanced diet that doesn’t supply these minerals
  2. Proper stretching and massaging your muscles: You should get into a habit of properly warming up and cooling down before and after exercising as this will allow the muscles to get into optimal physical condition. If you suddenly start exercising, it may damage them and cause immediate pain or may develop into chronic pain over time. The best way to correct this imbalance is to include foods in your diet which contain these minerals, such as bananas for potassium, organic meat for potassium and magnesium, organic eggs, and legumes.
  3. Start exercising if you aren’t doing it regularly: Muscle pain may occur due to atrophy or weakening of the muscles. Bad habits and posture overtime will also result in muscle pain and the best way to strengthen them is to start exercising and stretching them slowly. Once they are strong enough, some of the muscle pain issues will go away on their own.
  4. Correcting bad posture: Bad posture is another culprit for muscle pain. Especially common with sedentary jobs behind a desk postures tend to deteriorate overtime and cause, muscle pain. Thus along with exercising, try to change your posture and correct any bad habit that may have crept in.
  5. Stay hydrated: Dehydration is another common cause for muscle pain especially from muscle spasms or cramps. Ensure that you are properly hydrated throughout the day to avoid pain from spasms.
  6. Use either hot or cold therapy: You can use ice packs or hot water packs to soothe muscle pain depending on the type of causes. For example, throbbing muscle pain and spasms can be relaxed through warm compress while inflammations can be soothed by icepacks.
  7. Medications: In certain disorders of the body such as fibromyalgia, you will need to take specialized medications in order to correct the problem. For excessive and chronic pain, you should visit your doctor as it may require more extensive treatment.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
