Migraine - Know Its Ayurvedic Remedies!

In modern days, migraine has become a common disease that affects the young and the old equally. Migraine as such cannot be cured, but improving lifestyle and Ayurvedic medication can help you keep this disease under control and improve your quality of life.

What is Migraine?

Migraine, commonly known as Sooryavarta in Ayurveda, is a medical condition in which the excessive stimulation of the blood vessels in the brain causes a throbbing pain on one side of the head and is associated with nausea, sensitivity and vomiting. This happens because the vomiting centre of the brain gets activated during an episode. These symptoms are the most common signs; however, it varies from person to person. 

What Causes Migraines?

These headaches worsen upon sunrise and it is at its peak at noon, when the sun is at its highest intensity and slowly subsides on sunset. This is one of the major factors in setting in an episode; it is not true in every case. 

The other triggers that cause migraine attacks according to Ayurveda are:

  1. Spicy and oily food
  2. Stress, anger, grief, jealousy
  3. Suppressed emotions or natural urges
  4. Indigestion
  5. Consumption of too much of dry, salty and pungent food
  6. Consuming polluted food

General triggers may include:

  1. Smoking and drinking
  2. Stress
  3. Fasting
  4. Physical stress and exercise
  5. Fluctuation in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle or the use of birth control pills
  6. Stopping intake of tea or coffee suddenly
  7. Stress to sensory organs in the form of bright noises, bright lights, strong perfumes or odours etc.

Certain foods or beverages may also trigger an episode of migraine. These include baked foods, chocolates, processed foods, spicy foods, onions, dairy products and peanuts. These kinds of foods are known to suddenly increase Kapha dosha or Pitta Dosha and as a result, trigger an attack.

Symptoms of Migraine

It is usually characterised by a stinging, throbbing pain on one side of the head and is followed by nausea and vomiting. Some people may get visual aberrations called an aura- such as blind spots, blurred visions, distorted lines etc.

Ayurvedic medications that can help migraine are:

  1. Indian licorice – Glycyrrhiza glabra
  2. Sariva – Hemidesmus indicus
  3. Hareetaki – Chebulic myrobalan-Terminalia chebula
  4. Amalaki – amala – Emblica officinalis
  5. Mallika – Jasminum officinale
  6. Hareetaki – Chebulic myrobalan-Terminalia chebula
  7. Bala – Sida cordifolia
  8. Kumari – Aloe vera
  9. Sariva – Hemidesmus indicus

Simple home remedies useful in migraine:

  1. Tender leaves of jasmine or tender leaves of pomegranate are taken along with a pinch of salt and crushed well to obtain fresh juice. Early in the morning, preferably in empty stomach, 2-3 drops of this fresh juice is instilled to both the nostrils. Procedure is repeated once again evening hours (6-7 pm). This reduces the severity of headache in migraine.
  2. One fist full of Doorva grass (cynodan dactylon) is taken and its fresh juice is obtained. To this, 2 pinch of licorice powder is added and mixed well. This is consumed during the noon hours. Procedure is repeated for 20-30 days. This helps to reduce the severity of illness significantly.
  3. Take coriander seed powder – 1 teaspoon. add it to one cup of water, leave it as it is at night, next day morning, drink it on empty stomach.
  4. Soak 5 raisins and 5 almonds in water at night, next day morning, eat them. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Snoring occurs when you can't move your air through nose and throat during sleep. So air vibrate the surrounding tissues and snoring sound. Causes of snoring • overwight or obesity • Age - in middle age muscle of throat muscle decreases. • nasal problem (blocked or stuffy nose) • Alcohol, smoking, medication • Sleep posture These are some methods & instruction for releif in snoring: • Exercise daily and running, jogging. Do long breathing exercise pranayam daily. • Clear nasal passage (nose) before sleeping. You can take steam for 2 - 3 minutes to clear the passage. • Change your sleeping position, elevate your pillow slightly while sleeping. • Sleep on a side not on back. • Avoid smoking and excess drinking alcohol. Do not take sedative medicines. • You can do some throat exercises. Repeat these vowel a, e, i, o, you loudly three minutes few times in a day. Place your tongue tip behind your teeth and move backward three times in a day. Move your jaw in left side with open mouth for 30 seconds and in right side for 30 seconds. • You can also try for anti snoring mouth appliance.

It appears your wife has hyperthyroidism. Radio iodine therapy is one of definitive treatment for this condition. Treatment has no major side effects but pregnancy should be avoided for at least 6 months after iodine therapy and it should not be given during pregnancy.

If your able to walk do 30 mins of brisk walking daily. Inculcalate yoga in your daily exercises. Stop smoking, chewing tobbaco, alcohal cosumption if any. Modify your diet eat lots of salads and green vegies. Cut on mutton you can have fish. Have sprouts. Cut on oil and spices. Monitor your bp regularly.

Determination is the first step you have taken. Start Gokshur tab 1 b.i.d (Himalaya) and chanderprabha vati 1 b.i.d. With milk for 1 month. After one month pl report how many times you masturbated. I ll assess and tell you further course. All these days, pl keep stomach clean with Tarunikusumakar chooran 1 tsp at night with warm water every week. Do pranayam and meditation.

Dear lybrateuser, -At your age it is unlikely to be heart pain, it could be due to acidity -take some precautions like, avoid spicy, fried & junk foods -have meals on time, do not skip meals, chew your food well, do not lye down for at least ah hour after meals -have 7-8 glasses of water for proper digestion -if not much improvement then consult a doctor.

At 42 your wife is having hormonal changes and may be some imbalance due to perimenopasal time around menopause, get milk drop tested on slide and get her blood tested for prolactin hormone levels. Some woman for have higher levels of this hormone secreted by higher centre in brain when woman is pregnant but it is higher in non pregnant woman sometimes. Get back here, get an ultrasound of breast done to rule out any underlying nodes.

My 10 month old baby has runny nose, sneezing and coughs often, my ped suggested asthaline expectorant (3ml -3 times a day) gladimol c (6ml -3 times a day) for 3 days. My baby weight is 8.20 kilo. I just want to check if this is the correct dosage for my baby.

Dosage is correct, don't doubt on your pediatrician. But in viral upper respiratory infections don't give medicines repeatedly. Home made remedy will all that is required.

Hi Wagh There is very simple and easy to follow diet plan with which you can lose 2-5kg in just 15days. This plan can be done by you easily. First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket. And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back. You may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * surya namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * in diet vegetable protein of cereal, b complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.
