I initially thought it to be periods, but I already had my date starting of the month. I am scared and I need your opinion in this.

Hello, Withdrawal bleeding post ipill starts after 5-7 days. If you had sex in the mid cycle then this bleed may just be an ovulation bleed or possibly due to cervical or vaginal abrasions following intercourse.

I am 19 years old. I have regular periods. I have problem of bad smell from vaginal parts even when I don't have white discharge. What to do?

Vaginal odor is a very common problem that most women have to deal with at least once or twice in their life. Vaginal odor can be due to a number of reasons, such as bacterial growth, yeast infections, poor hygiene, hormonal changes, and sexually transmitted diseases. Tea tree oil contains strong antifungal as well as antiseptic properties, and thus it can be used to get rid of unpleasant vaginal odor. It will help get rid of bacteria that are contributing to the problem. Add three drops of tea tree oil to a cup of water. Use this solution to rinse the affected area daily or several times a week. Alternatively, dip a tampon in olive oil and then put a little tea tree oil on it. Insert the tampon and leave it in for at least one hour. Do this several times a week. Any querries inform me.

Hi dear. Welcome to lybrate. Yes there us a definite chance of pregnancy as there was contact of semen near the vagina. Even though the chances are slim but still there is a risk. Incase you not wish to conceive as yet it's best to take an emergency contraceptive. All the best.

placenta is a large substance which is atteached to wall of uterus and cannot twist around baby. It must have been the umbilical cord which unluckily strangled it. Foetal movement count check by mother timely picks up slow / no movements in last months of pregnancy, in that case usg and quick delivery/ caesarean can be done to save the baby.

The chance of pregnancy is low, depending on the timing of period, when intercourse happened. To be on the safe side, it's better to take emergency pills. But try to avoid regular intake of such pills.

The pre-ejaculate fluid itself does not contain sperm, however, it may pick up sperm from a previous ejaculation that remains in the urethra. Though only a few hundred sperm were present, they could theoretically pose a low risk of pregnancy. And for future use contraception like condom or oral contraceptives.

Hello, if the test is negative then you are not pregnant and the cause is likely gastrointestinal. You may visit a gastroenterologist for an examination.

Sir, I have a lump in my left breast for so long. Only in the left not in right. It does not hurt but is it serious problem?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
It looks like it is fibroadenoma, it should be removed after initial investigation like mammography and sonography of the breast and/or FNAC if it is painful. Fibroadenomas are not cancer and don’t increase the risk of developing breast cancer. They occur because of an increased sensitivity to the female hormone estrogen. A fibroadenoma usually has a smooth rubbery feel and can move easily under the skin. They are usually painless, but some people may feel pain. It is very common can occur in numbers. It can occur at any age. Most are about 1 to 3cm in size but occasionally, it can grow to more than 5cm. Most fibroadenomas stay the same size. Some get smaller and some eventually disappear over time. Sometimes surgery is required to remove large fibroadenomas.

What Makes the Aedes MOSQUITO so Dangerous? Hint: It's not just ZIKA!

MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS

What Makes the Aedes MOSQUITO so Dangerous? Hint: It's not just ZIKA!

What Makes the Aedes MOSQUITO so Dangerous?

There are about 3500 mosquito species in the world. Of them, the Aedes genus is responsible for the spread of the most deadliest diseases like Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, Dengue and now Zika Virus. The mosquito is easily recognized by the unique black and white lines on its body.

Here are certain reasons that make this genus of mosquito a threat to humans.

1. A preference for human flesh

It is the dietary preferences of some of the mosquitoes that make them very dangerous. While some species prefer livestock, amphibians, reptiles or birds, the Aedes aegypti prefer human flesh. Due to its affinity for feeding on humans, this species of mosquito is especially dangerous for people. Generally, it is only the female mosquitoes that drink blood; the male mosquitoes, on the other hand, live on water and nectar.

2. Can adapt to any environment

Another reason that makes them very dangerous is that they can adapt to any situation, making them a real menace. The preferred breeding areas for these mosquitoes are places where water stagnates like flower pots, buckets, tin cans etc. But they also breed closer to home as well in areas like wet shower floors or toilet tanks. For laying their eggs they require less than an inch of water and about 1 ½ week time to mature into adults.

In addition to breeding in shaded areas and outdoors, they also breed indoors. Moreover, the indoor environment being less prone to climatic changes, the mosquitoes tend to live longer. Since the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito leads to the spread of diseases, it is important to stop its spread or propagation.

3. Feeds throughout the day and all year long

Although these mosquitoes are known to most generally feed at day break and before nightfall, they can feed at any time of the day as well as spread infection throughout the year.

Once the virus gets inside the mosquito, it infects its mid-gut and consequently travels to its salivary glands over a time span of 8-12 days. Research reveals that most female mosquitoes spend their life span within the houses, and usually fly about 400 meters within the area.

I had a kidney transplant 6 years back. Now I am 31 yrs. I am on immunosuppressives medicines. I had 2 miscarriages recently. What are the precautions I should take before next pregnancy?

Weadvise pregnancy at least one year after transplant (now u had 6 years). But before planning pregnancy, we need to check the status of the kidney function, blood pressure, sugar, urine tests and also the need of immunosuppressants needed (as we need to use minimum drugs for minimum doses). Then you can start planning.

If this is the first episode of urine infection, then you don't need to worry much, in the form of protection, etc. If its happening repeatedly, you need evaluation in the form of partner evaluation (whether he is the source), presence of constipation, diabetes, etc. In that case you need to take care of what is called" post-coital prophylaxis" that is care after sexual intercourse, like local wash, urination, and antibiotics in severe cases.

Respected sir/madam, is it possible to miscarriage over 3 months pregnancy when it was confirmed repeatedly after hearing of fetal heart beat periodically and the patient having with no symptom like lower abdominal pain, bleeding, body ache etc? as because the patient was going to check up with her fetal stays to discuss about any malignancy regarding down syndrome but unfortunately it was suggests that no heart beat was found leading to miscarriage without showing any symptoms. Please refer the possible cause.

MBBS (Gold Medalist, Hons), MS (Obst and Gynae- Gold Medalist), DNB (Obst and Gynae), Fellow- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (ACOG, USA), FIAOG
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
Yes, that is not an uncommon problem, though very unfortunate. There are carious causes like genetic defect, blood problems like thrombophilia, uterine diseases (diseases of uterus/ cervix), hormonal problems, infections etc. We have to diagnose the cause and then can start treatment. Please remember even after 6 repeated miscarriage, the chance of having successful delivery at term in next pregnancy is 50%. So, we can keep hope.
