8 Tips To Keep Your Pets Calm During Diwali Time

8 Tips To Keep Your Pets Calm During Diwali Time

Cracker sounds are a stress for most pets – and can leave owners pretty frazzled too.

According to figures from the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) , 45% of dogs show signs of fear when they hear loud bangs.

And 65% of owners feel anxious for their pet as the bangers go off.

But with Diwali celebrations starting, planning can take the stress out during crackers bursting. Here’s ten things you can do to help:

1. Create a safe den or hideaway, like this cat tent, right. Before fireworks night, put treats, toys and blankets there so pets associate it with positive experiences. The RSPCA’s Professor Daniel Mills said: “Dogs learn this place is safe and enjoyable. So when fireworks go off they may go there because they know no harm will come to them.”

2. Keep pets indoors. Cats should stay in and dogs walked in daylight.

3. Close curtains and play music or leave the TV on to muffle firework noise.

4. Protect small animals. Rabbits, guinea pigs or birds should be given extra bedding to burrow in and have an area of their cage or hutch covered with blankets.

5. Try letting pets smell essential oils – they can help to relax and soothe them.Use plug in pheromone diffusers.

6. Try calming supplements in their food.

7. Play with pets so they are tired and may sleep through the day.

8. Don’t punish a pet for reacting to noise – it will make things worse.

My female Lab is 13 years old and has not been mated. Every year in the month of February she lactates and milk flows out of her rear tw breasts which she keeps sucking and self feeds. What is the remedy for this as due to her sucking the breasts have enlarged. Please advise.

MVSC
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
This is not an uncommon condition in dogs. This is a condition of false pregnancy seen just after the estrous or mating period in dogs. Lactation or oozing of milk occurs in this period and it increases with stimulation. So try to put collar around her neck to prevent her from licking. Take the dog for walk during this time or engage her with some other activity to distract her attention form licking. The milk secretion will gradually reduce and the breast size also reduces. If the secretion is more You can try Lasix 20 mg tablet once in day for 2-3 days and observe the dog. The dog will come to normal as the milk secretion come down.

Veterinarian,
"SCOOP THE POOP"
Every time you take your pet out for his daily business... carry a plastic bag and clean up the poop, to contribute your share to keep our environment clean!
Since dogs are meat eaters, their poop contents nitrogenous wastes and can contaminate nearby water bodies.
Dog poop can carry potentially harmful bacterias and worms, which can spread within the area around and pose risk to other humans and pets..!
Besides, no one likes to step on pet waste and spread it to homes, cars and workplaces.
Be a responsible owner.. Scoop the poop!!!!
