I noticed a small, black mark on my wisdom tooth (that's small and still growing). I brushed and it went away. After dinner, I just noticed a faint black mark on it again. What could this be?

A small black mark could be decay. It could also just be a stain. But if it went away after brushing then it chances are that it is just food particle or debris because decay or caries can never be removed by brushing. Please visit a dentist to get it filled or cleaned out during the early stages.

Wait and watch for a few days for the pain to come down and after that get a cap done over the tooth. If the pain doesn't subside, you have to get the procedure repeated.

I have bad breath problem. I have observed that soon after drinking milk the problem of bad breath starts. This happens even after brushing teeth and cleaning tongue. I got the regular check up and scaling done at more than 1 Dentist. Dentists don't have a clue why I have this bad breath problem.

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Noida
Bad breath has many causes, most common cause is any respiratory infection with post nasal sinusitis, second most common cause is due to Gastrointestinal issues( stomach issues),3rd one are teeth and there are many more. It looks like your bad breath is not related to your dentition. Most likely cause( with the kind of history you have written ) seems to be acidity or any other stomach problem.

Hello dear, it seems you are facing problem of bleeding gums, it is not necessary that you have bleeding gums due to rashly done brushing but your gums may be swollen and your teeth may need scaling. Sometimes while doing brushing quickly or harshly the bristles of brush may cause injury to gingiva which may cause bleeding. As you told that you have many cavities certainly some of your tooth may be broken and may cause bleeding.

Pregnancy and Oral Health

Pregnancy and Oral Health

Pregnancy brings with it a whole lot of body system changes and oral health is no exception. Some simple careful planning, however, can help avoid a lot of oral health complications associated with pregnancy. The hormonal changes during pregnancy have a direct effect on the oral health and has higher incidence of decay, pregnancy gingivitis, and pregnancy tumors. Additionally, morning sickness affects the regular oral care, leading to more plaque and decay.

Before pregnancy: If you are planning to get pregnant, then a dental visit can help you get a thorough check-up ahead of the pregnancy. A routine cleaning and check for cavities should be sufficient to avoid any urgent treatment need during the period of pregnancy.

During pregnancy: If you were not able to do your pre-pregnancy dental visit, inform the dentists about pregnancy as early as possible. All elective procedures can be done after the delivery. Only really essential treatment that cannot wait until the delivery should be undertaken during pregnancy, most safe if done during the 4th to 6th months.

Listed below are some points to consider as far as oral/dental health is considered during pregnancy:

  1. Scaling and polishing can be done as usual
  2. Inform the dentist about all the medications that you are advised by your gynecologist
  3. Periodic check-up once in 3 months to reduce severity of gum disease and decay
  4. Good oral hygiene measures including brushing, flossing, and rinsing
  5. Try a bland toothpaste if morning sickness is very severe
  6. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Tooth formation happens in the third month and requires diet rich in calcium and minerals
  7. Avoid sweet snacks which can lead to greater plaque formation

The hormone changes combined with oral infection (could be gum disease or tooth decay) can lead to severe effects on the developing baby. It is extremely important to avoid dental infections, as these may necessitate antibiotics, require x-rays and even require treatment like root canal and/or extraction, all of which are best avoided until after the baby is delivered. It is considered safe for dental procedures to be done during the 4th to 6th month. Though now there are safer measures to do x-rays and dental procedures, they are best avoided, unless in case of emergency. This emergency situation can be avoided by better planning and some minimal care. Severe gum disease could also lead to premature or low birth weight of the baby. So plaque buildup should be avoided which leads to both decay and gum disease.

After delivery: After the delivery of the baby, please visit your dentist to ensure that there is no emergent dental condition requiring attention. Resume your regular dental care after delivery.

Respected sir/madam, when I brush and rinse the mouth a drop of blood come out. It happens only in the morning. No any injury. Please suggest why it happens and what to do?

MDS - Periodontics
Dentist, Thane
A simple cleaning of teeth should be sufficient for reducing the bleeding from gums. It generally happens due to accumulation of things in between your gums and teeth.

In my teeth is affecting by a cavity and also mouth ulcers also How I am cure this problem?

In my teeth is affecting by a cavity and also mouth ulcers also How I am cure this problem?
The cavity needs to be filled using a dental restorative material like composite or glass ionomer cement. You can visit your nearby dentist to get it restored. If it has pain then your tooth will require a root canal treatment. Use warm saline to swish your mouth every hour. The mouth ulcer will subside in a few days. If pain is present then use a local anesthetic gel on the affected area.

praveen, bad breath can be due to sinusitis or other diseases also. if it would be an oral condition, then since you have followed the dentist's instructions correctly and did all whatever they asked you for, this problem would have gone. as it still persists, it seems to be due to other reasons. visit an oral surgeon for confirming sinusitis, if it's not, visit physician.

Had undergone apicoectomy on 2 front tooth but still one of the tooth is getting infected and now my dentist told me that he has to remove the tooth and use a bridge to replace the removed tooth. I am scared to get my missing tooth replaced by bridge. Is that a good choice. Why can not I go through implantation ?which is better choice. Also my dentist told me that implantation doesn't work in my case as my bone is infected and could not support ?can anyone help?

Implant is the best option but as doctor told you have less bone there, it will be difficult, or else you have to do bone grafting and wait, which takes more time. Bridge is also good if the supporting teeth have good strength. And go for zirconia, or e max crown which looks good, b coz its front teeth.

Dental pain is not something you can treat by your own. Sometimes when pain subsided it may recur with more severity. You please visit a dentist, get a small xray done for concerned tooth and then treatment accordingly. THANK YOU.

My gum is paining very badly from past two days and its also swelled up. I don't know what to do. Please help me.
We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with surgical, gum strengthening procedure. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

How shall I remove stains from my teeth that has been caused due to chewing paan masala?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
How shall I remove stains from my teeth that has been caused due to chewing paan masala?
The simplest method of removing minor surface stains is polishing, or micro-abrasion if staining is more intrinsic. Provided that your discolouration is not due to inadequate enamel exposing the dentin, tooth whitening (bleaching) is often the most effective treatment for yellow stained teeth. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply snowdent paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min. Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results.
