Why Do You Get an EAR Discharge?

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Why Do You Get an EAR Discharge?

What are the causes and symptoms of ear discharge?

Ear discharge is the phenomenon of fluids being expelled from the ear. This condition is also known as otorrhea.

The kinds of fluids that can be discharged from the ear range from blood to pus and other forms of bodily secretions. It is caused by a number of factors, which determine the exact nature of the condition and the diagnosis for treatment.

What are the causes of ear discharge?

Some forms of ear discharge are natural, such as ear wax which is produced by the body as a form of defense against external particles that may enter the ears. Other forms are unnatural and result from anomalies in the health system.

The causes of these include the following:

  • Infections: This is the most common cause of ear discharge and occurs when bacteria and viruses infest the inside of the ear and lead to the secretion of fluids, which builds up in the middle ear or at the eardrum
  • Swimmer’s Ear: This condition is also known as otitis externa and is caused by staying in water for prolonged periods. It results from excessive exposure to moisture that makes the walls of the ear canal to break down allowing bacteria and fungi to enter and infect the ear.
  • Trauma: Excess pressure on the eardrum can cause it to rupture and discharge fluids. This happens due to a number of reasons such as exposure to loud explosive sounds or pressure from flying in aircrafts and scuba diving.
  • Skull Injury: Damage to the bones behind the ear as a result of injury can also lead to ear discharge due to infection.
  • Tonsillitis:  Inflammation of tonsils may cause pain or a repeated infection in the ear leading to fluid discharge.

What are the symptoms associated with ear discharge?

Some of the symptoms of otorrhea are as follows:

  • Abnormal and unusual secretion of fluids from the ear
  • Swelling of the ear
  • Partial or complete loss of hearing
  • Pain and throbbing in the ear
  • Accompanying signs such as fever and migraine

Diagnosis and treatment of the problem depend on the exact cause and nature of the condition, which also determines treatment and recovery time.

Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body. High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. 4 months Baby suddenly having sore throat as a result sound generated when breathing. Kindly advise.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Only symptom of baby is sound when breathing developed suddenly, is not criterion of sore throat. It is likely tug of saliva in throat may cause throat sound or it may be chest infection. Baby is only 4 month old, it is better to consult pediatrician for early intervention.

I had sinus or migraine as one side face ache? Severe one sided face ache frequently what is it cure?

MBBS, MD - Anaesthesiology, FIPM
Pain Management Specialist, Pune
One sided facial pain is not due to migraine. It can be due to: 1. Tooth infection: Consult a dentist first to rule out dental pathology as cause of facial pain. 2. Sinusitis: Associated nasal congestion, features of upper respiratory infections are present. ENT consultation is needed. 3. Trigeminal Neuralgia: Sharp, shooting electric shock like pain in bursts felt along particular part of face It is easily relieved with medication and if needed intervention like Gasserian ganglion block. Consult a pain specialist for this. 4. Idiopathic facial pain: This condition is simply facial pain without any reason. This can be managed by medication and if needed injection. Consult a pain specialist for this. For detailed evaluation and treatment accordingly consult with a pain specialist.

I have marketing job and from last one week I feel like little pain in my left ear, I'm not done anything wrong with my ear, I usually use earbuds to clean my ear and in past I never face this kind of problem. Pls. Help me out for this. Thanks.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Do not meddle with the ears. Leave it alone. Using earbuds on the ear all by yourself is not advisable. You are likely to injure the ear drum. The fact that you have ear pain a mild one I would advise you to take an analgesic for 2/3 days. That should suffice.
