Can Physiotherapy Help Lower Back Pain?

Can Physiotherapy Help Lower Back Pain?

Low back pain is one of the most common medical problems and occurs due to injury associated with the nerves, bones, and muscles of the back. The pain can vary from a sharp shooting pain that happens at various intervals to a gnawing pain that can last for weeks on end. While the former can go away with some muscle relaxant, the latter may need a combination of medications and exercise.

Common reasons include improper sleeping posture, lifting, fracture, lack of exercise, disk injuries, arthritis, and many more. Most of these instances would lead to medium to long term pain that will not subside on its own. Physiotherapy has been proven to provide very good relief and render it pain-free.

The aim of physiotherapy is 3-fold - reduce pain, improve movement, and maintain the spinal function in the long run. Most often, the therapy sessions would last for about 4 weeks when the regular course of medications have not helped much.

The nerves, muscles, bones, and disks of the low back are supported by the abdominal muscles and the back muscles. The intent of the exercise is to strengthen these two sets of muscles so that the spine/low back per se is not very susceptible to injury.  The exercises would be a combination of stretching followed by strengthening and conditioning, all aimed at these two sets of muscles.

Some common exercises include bottom to heels stretch, knee rolls, back extensions, deep abdominal strengthening, and pelvic tilts.

In addition to being used a sole means of treatment, physiotherapy also is used in back pain to treat severe cases both pre and post surgically. What is corrected by surgery needs to be enhanced by the regular exercises as prescribed by the doctor.

One disclaimer that a doctor might want to give is that the physiotherapy may not be beneficial if exercises are not done properly or if the patients don't adhere to the scheduled prescription. The long-term success depends not just on getting the relief but on following the maintenance exercises that are prescribed. This is more important and helps avoid relapse of the back pain.  A good posture and improved core stability with ongoing exercises is the key to success of physiotherapy in low back pain.

While most people consider low back pain as a chronic condition, it can be managed effectively. It is important to realize that there is no overnight cure and that it may not get better on its own. Physiotherapy is a very good intervention; however, it will depend on the severity of pain and how it affects the patient's lifestyle.

Hi doctor, on 25 dec my wife complained of pain in her right shoulder, after taking a few pain killers from local doctor we consulted a ortho and he also gave a 2 week course of pain killer but as the pain did not subside he asked for a chest xray which was done on 23 feb 19 which revealed bilateral hilar prominent ?vascular then on admission in the hospital a mri showed multiple enlarged mediastinal and biletaralhilar lymph nodes" report attached" further hrct with contrast showed mediastinal and biletaralhilar matted necrotic lymphadenopathy etc. Suggestive of kochs. Later did pet scan and reports "are as attached" also did a ct guided biopsy "reports attached" did multiple blood test (all reports attached) doctors suspected sarcoidosis and discharged without and any treatment saying it will take time and the body will cure itself. On consulting a welknown chest specialist on 18 march 2019 he came to a conclusion that tb medication should be started and also got the mantoux test done which showed 22. 5 cms positive result, he also on my request started steroid 60 mg per day as my wife had terrible back pain radiating to the front and stomach for the whole month of feb to mid march which never subsided even one bit without pain killers, now with one month of tb medication and steroids which is tapered to 20 per day she is 50 % better where pain is concerned, but dos, nt seem to get better than 50% my questions sir are :with all the reports attached do you feel that the diagnosis is on the right track when will she get more better as the pain is still there had lost 5 kgs in the last 2 months and not gained any yet (weight stays constant on 65 kgs) as the steroids power reduces will the pain resurface how long to a complete recovery. Awaiting your valuable reply.

If you have leg pain then you have to rule out the casues for having leg pain. First of all check your weight and your haemoglobin levels, as anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there are no issues with the knee joint or back pain. If not if the pain radiates down the back of thigh and legs then it might be due to sciatica. Kindly consult the nearby physiotherapist. Hope you recover soon from the leg pain. Pain in the back while walking and standingpain in the right legif you have leg pain please check your body weight and your hemoglobin levels, as anemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. My suggestion would be to wear mcr chapels which will help you to prevent the weight falling on the back. And also should check whether you have flat foot on the right leg that also might be the reason to have pain in one particular leg pain in the left side of the leg/thighthe compression of the sciatic nerve should be around the right side that's the reason you have pain in the left side.

Back Pain - When Is Specialist Required To Intervene?

Back Pain - When Is Specialist Required To Intervene?

Pain is unpleasant suffering caused by injury or illness. Back pain may be sudden/constant, dull, severe or not responding to short rest and medication. Constant pain in back in any region of the spine for more than few days to weeks needs intervention.

Pain which is intense especially at night requires an urgent visit to a specialist.

Sudden onset of pain in back with or without injury needs urgent attention.

Back pain with difficulty in walking, pain while getting up from position of comfort, pain during change of posture or pain after prolonged sitting (for work) can lead to serious permanent damage, if left untreated.

Pain which travels to one or both legs may be due to pressure on the nerve/s and if left untreated for long can lead to permanent weakness or damage.

Pain associated with numbness, tingling or weakness in legs, especially below the knees, commonly called Sciatica, needs to be investigated. Various spinal ailments can lead to weakness in one or two limbs or all four limbs. There may be associated or isolated numbness (loss of sensation to touch, pain or temperature) without back pain.

Numbness, tingling or weakness may be the only symptoms without any complaint or without a history of back pain.

Problems related to bladder control which may be difficult to control, hesitancy in passing or dribbling of urine. There may be associated with constipation. Loss of bowel/bladder control is caused by pressure on spinal cord &/or nerves which may be due to injury, infection, disc prolapse or tumor.

Sudden swelling and redness in the back usually happen after an injury or accident but sometimes are signs of underlying severe illness.

Loss of normal shape/curvatures of spine can present with or without pain. It can lead to forward, sideways or rarely backward bending.

Unintentional weight loss, loss of appetite, evening rise of fever or disturbed sleep with associated back pain/weakness/numbness needs to visit a specialist.

4 Herbal Remedies To Fight Pain And Inflammation!

Inflammation can develop in various parts of the body owing to different factors. Inflammation can develop as a result of the immune system reacting to antigens. Such inflammations are collectively called arthritis.

It is difficult for a person who suffers from inflammation and the resulting pain to lead a normal life. The unending lists of pills that are prescribed to treat such a condition can become stressful at one point.

However, if you wish to live a pill-free life, you can always opt for these natural remedies listed below:

  1. Pineapple Juice: Bromelain is a very effective enzyme that remains in high concentration in the tropical fruit pineapple. Exactly how bromelain reduces inflammation is a mystery, but studies show that the consumption of fresh pineapple juice in the morning can relieve the pain that is caused by inflammation. 3. Fish Oil: If one apple a day keeps the doctor away, fishes are also not very far behind, especially when it comes to the treatment of inflammation. According to research conducted by the Cardiff University of England, fishes that thrive in temperate waters like herring, trout, salmon and cod are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that can cure inflammation and even autoimmune disorders like psoriasis, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. You can either consume these fishes or you can consume the capsules that are made from the extract of these fishes, depending on their availability.
  4. Devil’s Claw: This is an age-old natural remedy for the treatment of inflammation caused by gouts or arthritis. Used widely among the Native Americans, devil’s claw gained popularity in the world of modern science when its multiple benefits were witnessed. Devil’s claw is a root that usually grows in continental Africa, especially in the arid regions. Obtaining the whole root could be difficult, but, you will easily get devil’s claw supplements in the market.
