I have a 10 month baby girl. She is suffering a fever. How can I handle this? Please advise.
Most fevers are viral and can be managed by you by giving paracetamol drops or suspension according to the weight. It would need to be repeated every 5 to 6 hours for 2 to 3 days. Wiping the most hot parts of the child with lukewarm water will help to get the fever down faster. If child is not improving or has other problems you need to contact a pediatrician.

Hi, it seems that your child is passing developmental milestones almost as well as the other babies. This is a good sign, and means that your child can probably go to regular school and be like other children. Get a developmental assessment done at around 2 years by your pediatrician/ a psychologist specializing in down's syndrome, warm regards.

My child is having minor Epilepsy. He is taking Keppra 250 daily twice. Since November 2014. Since he started taking medicine. He is fine. I just want to know that now almost 1 and a half year is being completed. So should I continue this medicine or should I go to doctor again to confirm.

Your neurologist should be able to answer your query well, initially you need to reduce the dosage and see, if no seizures you can further reduce the dose and gradually taper the dose and stop. Ifno epileptic attacks. Also get an eeg done.

I have 4 months baby. I m breastfeeding my baby. As someone told me that the breastfeeding mother shouldn't sleep on her back as the milk should go back and there will be no milk for breastfeed. Is it truth?

Conditional, breastfeeding mothers need to change positions while they are not feeding. They can sleep according to their comfort. However, when they are feeding then they need to lay side se side position some mothers, particularly larger breasted women, find they will need to roll themselves and their baby over to their other side to feed from the second breast, whilst others will find that once they have fed from the lower breast they can just lean forward and feed from the top breast without changing sides. If you do choose the second alternative you will need to make sure that the lower breast is well drained before switching to the upper breast so that blockages in the milk ducts to not occur.

If the node moves with swallowing it is associated with the thyroid gland. Otherwise you can ignore it as of now.

When you keep your child on milk for a long time they do not eat other food. Do not develop liking for other food items. So we recommend parents to keep milk minimum in their child's diet. It just fills your child's stomach so that he does not eat other food. Now try to introduce variety of food items. Add ghee, oil a fruit every day. Use milk to prepare kheer. Or dalia porridge. 1 and half year old child should be able to eat all food items that an adult consumes.

Acute Upper Respiratory Infection: Causes and Symptoms

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Acute Upper Respiratory Infection: Causes and Symptoms

Upper respiratory infection (URI) is a condition, which involves illness, mainly caused by critical infection in the upper respiratory tract. This region includes the pharynx, larynx, nose and sinus. This infection causes diseases, such as tonsillitis (tonsils get inflamed), pharyngitis (causes sore throat) sinusitis (nasal passage becomes inflamed), laryngitis (voice box in your throat gets inflamed) and common cold.

Causes of upper respiratory infection (URI):

  1. Both virus and bacteria cause upper respiratory infection (URI). The most common form of virus causing this infection is known as 'rhinovirus.'
  2. The immune system of young adults and children are often very vulnerable. Hence, they are more likely to develop upper respiratory tract infection.
  3. URI is also contagious and airborne in nature. So if a person comes in contact with an infected person suffering from URI, he/she is likely to develop this infection.
  4. Not washing hands before meals can also cause upper respiratory infection because the virus can be transferred easily to the mouth and can travel into your system.
  5. If you have any lung problem or heart disease, you are more likely to be susceptible to upper respiratory infection.
  6. Those who already have inflamed tonsils can trigger tonsillitis by drinking any cold or spicy beverage like ice-creams or cold milkshakes.
  7. Exposure to some flu or cold can cause pharyngitis. It can also be caused by second hand smoking.
  8. Birth defects or structural defects in the nasal cavity or nasal polyps can cause sinusitis. Sometimes the inside part of the nose may get swollen due to common cold and block your ducts. This is a common cause for sinusitis.

Symptoms of acute upper respiratory infection:

  1. Congestion in the lungs or nasal area.
  2. Whooping cough
  3. Running nose due to common cold.
  4. Feelings of fatigue and lethargy throughout the day.
  5. Your body will start aching without engaging in any physical exercise.
  6. You can also lose consciousness in severe respiratory tract infections.
  7. Difficulty in breathing.
  8. Oxygen levels in blood drop down drastically.

Sometimes in worse cases, acute upper respiratory tract infection (URI) can also cause respiratory failure, respiratory arrest and congestive heart failure. Therefore, it is necessary to book an appointment with a doctor as soon as you start experiencing the above symptoms. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

Cough, sneezing and fever are all symptoms of flu. If she has breathing problem made out by poor activity, chest moving up and down, she has to be seen by a doctor. Otherwise give her paracetamol syrup 5 ml and lots of fluids.
