How to Prevent Prediabetes From Progressing Into Diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is a warning sign for diabetes.  In prediabetes, your blood sugar levels are higher than the normal, but still lower to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes is considered a major risk factor for diabetes.

What are the symptoms of prediabetes?

Symptoms of diabetes and prediabetes are almost same, as in both the conditions, sugar levels in blood are on a higher side. Few of the early signs are:

How to prevent prediabetes from developing into type-2 diabetes?

You must know that having prediabetes can double your chances of getting type-2 diabetes later in life, but what you may not know is that prediabetes is reversible. By following these three simple lifestyle changes you can delay the progression of diabetes or even prevent its risk.

  1. Eat healthy: By eating a healthy and well-balanced diet, you can keep a check on your increased sugar levels. A well-balanced diet gives you all the essential nutrients, fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, that help to regulate your metabolism, thus avoiding increased blood sugar levels. Avoid unhealthy, junk and processed foods and focus more on eating grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits.

  2. Adapt an active lifestyle: By including 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine for at least five times a week, you can reduce the chances of developing metabolic diseases like diabetes. It also helps to keep a check on your weight.

  3. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese is itself a major cause of metabolic disorders. Studies say that by maintaining a healthy weight or losing 5-7% of your weight, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed.

Lifestyle changes are the best and easiest ways to reverse prediabetes. Other than this, monitor your blood sugar levels and go for regular check-ups so that the condition can be diagnosed and treated at an early stage.

5 Dietary Supplements that can be helpful in diabetes

5 Dietary Supplements that can be helpful in diabetes

Dietary supplements such as vitamins, minerals, and some other herbal supplements are known to be beneficial in health conditions like diabetes. However, it is important to understand that these supplements are an add-on to your daily medicines and not a replacement. Here are a few dietary supplements that you can include along with your diet:

  1. Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Alpha-lipoic acid or ALA has an antioxidant property and is known to prevent cell damage and also lowers blood glucose levels. It also reduces the progression of diabetic neuropathy. Liver, spinach, broccoli, and potatoes are good sources of ALA. It is also available in the form of commercial supplements.

  2. Chromium: Chromium is an essential trace mineral and is required for proper glucose metabolism. Adding chromium to your daily diet improves the effect of insulin and also aids weight loss. Sources of chromium are broccoli, grape juice, brewer’s yeast, dried garlic, dried basil, beef, red wine and commercial capsules/ tablets.

  3. Coenzyme Q10: Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance and helps in metabolism of carbohydrates and blood glucose control. It is also considered good for heart health. CoQ10 is best available in the form of supplements and natural sources are limited to only meats and some seafood.

  4. Magnesium: Magnesium is an important mineral that is required by the body in small quantities but still the daily requirement is not met, especially in diabetic people. It is important for normal functioning of heart, nerves, muscles, bones, glucose metabolism and making proteins. You can add green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and some whole grains as a part of your daily diet requirement or it can be taken as tablets, capsules, or liquids.

  5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids. They are known to protect you against heart disease and stroke, which are very common in patients with diabetes. So, foods that are good in omega-3 are fish, fish oil, canola oil or soybean oil, some nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, wheat germ, sunflower and safflower seeds. It is also available in the form of capsules or gels.

The dietary supplements are generally safe to use, but some of them can cause a reaction with medications that you are already taking. So, before adding any of these supplements, talk to your doctor about it.

Diabetic Mastopathy: An Uncommon Complication of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetic Mastopathy: An Uncommon Complication of Diabetes Mellitus

As you know uncontrolled diabetes can lead to various complications, diabetic mastopathy is one such rare complication. It is also known as diabetic fibrous mastopathy. In this condition, you may observe lumps or lesions around breast, which are mainly composed of fibrotic and inflammatory elements and are usually non-cancerous. The condition is more common in people with type-1 diabetes and maximum cases reported are in pre-menopausal women.

Symptoms of diabetic mastopathy

Main symptom of this condition is development of lesions or lumps in the breast. These lumps are usually hard, irregular and discrete. You may not experience any pain when you touch the lump. In some cases presence of these lumps can be felt on one side or both the breasts where as, in some cases, these lumps are not even detectable.

What are the causes of diabetic mastopathy?

The exact cause for diabetic mastopathy is still not clear but the possible reasons that can lead to it are:

  • An autoimmune reaction

  • Genetic factors such as human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type

  • Association with insulin therapy for long duration

  • Hyperglycemia

Diagnosis & treatment of diabetic mastopathy

MRI or ultrasound are amongst the first examinations that your doctor will suggest, if something abnormal is identified to further check the condition. It is important for you to understand that lumps in diabetic mastopathy are very similar to breast cancer and can’t be differentiated just by manual examination or ultrasound. To understand the nature of lump and to rule out the possibility of breast cancer, it is important to undergo a biopsy. In this procedure, your doctor will remove few tissues from the breast through an invasive method and not a surgery, which will then be sent to the lab to analyse if it is benign or malignant in nature. This is the difference between breast cancer and diabetic mastopathy. In case of diabetic mastopathy lumps can be removed surgically.

If you had diabetic mastopathy and have got the lumps removed, there are still chances that the condition may reoccur. To find out if there are any new lumps you should follow up with your doctor.

Symptoms of diabetes in women

Other than the usual symptoms of diabetes like excessive feeling of thirst and hunger, frequent  urination, there are a few more symptoms which are unique to women, such as:

MBBS

Lower Your Blood Pressure with Acupuncture

Hypertension or high blood pressure is often related to poor lifestyle habits and it is always suggested to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the better management of blood pressure levels. Other than maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can also opt for alternative therapies like acupuncture, which is a proven therapy to effectively manage hypertension.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an old traditional method, in which needles are inserted at some specific points of the body. This helps in stimulating the flow of energy, which results in natural healing. As per this traditional science, any obstruction or imbalance in the energy flow leads to disease or illness. Some of the factors that can cause blockage of energy are- stress, poor diet and any disease.

Acupuncture and its benefit in high blood pressure

Acupuncture can be helpful in treating a variety of acute and chronic conditions including hypertension. It regulates the blood flow which further helps in:

  • Lowering blood pressure levels

  • Preventing brain damage by reducing the neuron damage

  • Reducing symptoms of hypertension like dizziness, palpitations, and weakness

  • Reducing stress, muscle tension and chronic pain including headaches

  • Decreasing the risk of other hypertension related complications like stroke, peripheral artery disease, heart failure and myocardial infarction

How is acupuncture performed?

Primarily three different points are targeted in acupuncture to treat hypertension. In the process the position of needles are changed after every 5–10 minutes, with a slight thrust. A normal duration lasts for an average of 20 minutes. Acupuncture is considered to be safe and effective. Studies suggest that acupuncture when combined with medications, is more effective in lowering blood pressure levels than medicines alone.

Before taking any alternative treatment or therapy you should talk to your doctor about it.
