It’s not too late to reverse the effects of smoking. An overwhelming amount of damage to your health can be reversed by quitting. Studies have shown that quitting at around age 30 reduces the chance of dying from smoking-related diseases by more than 90%. If you quit at around age 50, you reduce the risk of dying prematurely by 50% compared with those who continue to smoke. Even those who quit at around age 60 or older live longer than those who continue to smoke. Not only that but you’ll experience immediate health benefits from being a nonsmoker – as quickly as 20 minutes after you quit. What Happens When You Quit Immediately after quitting smoking, heart rate and blood pressure, which is abnormally high while smoking, begin to return to normal. Within a few hours, the level of carbon monoxide, which reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, begins to decline. Within a few weeks, circulation improves, you don’t produce as much phlegm, and you don’t cough or wheeze as often. The workload on the heart is decreased and cardiac function is improved. Food tastes better, and your sense of smell returns to normal. Everyday activities no longer leave you out of breath. Within several months of quitting, you experience significant improvements in lung function. In one year, your risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke is halved. In five years, many kinds of cancer, including lung, larynx, mouth, stomach, cervix, bladder, show decline in risk, and that decline approaches the risk of someone who has never smoked. Within 10 to 15 years, risk of lung disease, including bronchitis and emphysema, are decreased. Conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, thyroid conditions, hearing loss, dementia, and osteoporosis are positively affected. Nerve endings in the mouth and nose begin to regenerate, improving taste and smell. Medications may work better, enabling some to be taken in decreased doses. If you’re taking birth control pills, quitting smoking will decrease your chance of heart attack and stroke due to clotting. You’ll have decreased risk for impotence and infertility. If you’re pregnant, you’ll protect your unborn child from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and low birth weight. Years will be added to your life: people who quit smoking, regardless of their age, are less likely than those who continue to smoke to die from smoking-related illness.

I don’t know if you are fully aware: you have mentioned that you are suffering from anxiety, which in itself can disturb your sleep. Instead of worrying too much about causes, why don’t you implement some of my suggestions, because they work effectively. The lack of sleep, i.e. Sleep for less than 6 hours per night, is directly linked to about 86 diseases! So let us first focus on that. In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i.e. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

Dear, Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you?re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse?no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn?t easy. But it?s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

Stress is a reaction to a real or perceived event that acts as a stressor. In other words, how much stressed one feels depends on how much stress one perceives in a given situation. Start by making a stress diary. Identify what causes stress. Ask why it causes stress. Is it a negative presumption about the even or a reality that is bothering you. Then figure out, how you have been dealing with the stressor. If the way you handle stress doesn't help, figure out the alternatives. If you by yourself are not able to do this exercise, consult a psychotherapist.

The tea you are taking is actually to overcome hunger pangs to replace a meal or just to feel fresh. The problem here is that it actually backfires. Lack of nutrition due to the fact that tea is replacing nutritious meals is causing body to store fats. Firstly you have to improve your appetite and take nutritious foods and avoid crashing your intake. Once you take meals at the right times it will help make you feel fresh and not hungry and you won't need tea to perk you up. When it comes to weight/ fat loss it's all about being sensible with food. Eat small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Avoid junk as far as possible. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Lastly be committed.

There are various dangers of smoking. 1) Worsening of lung function over a period of time leading to COPD. 2) Increased of lung cancer and other cancers like oral cancer, laryngeal CA. Etc 3) Increased rate of atherosclerosis and it's related complications like stroke (लकवा) and heart attack. These risks start decreasing the day you stop smoking. Repeat test after stoping smoking. I have been through depression since last year after my father passed away. I get angry to such an extent that I could harm someone but somehow I am able to control it and I lost my confidence and I am not able to concentrate on things.I want to go to a psychiatrist but I am not able to due to some social causes. How could I can get rid of it at home?

You may not need a psychiatrist as yet. However, you describe your plight very well. You have what is called an anger-related depression. This is how it works: if you are angry about something and you feel that it cannot or you cannot resolve it, then you will turn the feeling inwards. Anger is pure energy, it wants to and seeks to vent itself outwards. Unexpressed feelings will then turn inwards and stifle your natural energy to make you feel depleted and lead you into depression. Now it is not possible to suppress this held up feeling for long and one day (which has not yet arrived but you are clearly struggling to contain its expression) it will come in the form of an outburst and you will be completely out of control. This can have serious repercussions and sometimes cause irreparable damage. You will be so embarrassed that you will sink into further depression which will lead to chronic states with more severe outcomes that I don?t wish to name. You must talk to someone about your anger (probably related to your father?s death) ? a counselor is quite adequate. About doing it yourself, if you commit yourself then exercise is the best holistic medicine. Good vigorous workout and aerobic in nature for at least 30 minutes with make the brain produce natural antidepressants called tryptophan. If you did it continuously for 21 days, you will develop a new habit and when you keep at it for 7 more weeks it will be somewhat firmly entrenched. You still need to talk to someone.

It's natural to feel sad about the loss and is understandable. All you need to do is to be among friends and family and people who care for you. Also have a relaxing and peaceful sleep at night. It may take at least 15-20 days fir you to recover from those feelings and memories. If they still keep on disturbing you and you keep feeling sad and unable to get on with regular life, do not hesitate to consult a psychiatrist for help.

It is not a psychiatric problem but it is a sign of insecurity in you. Just because you love someone does not mean that you should curtail their freedom: why would she want to be in this relationship, if you are so insecure and that she cannot enjoy her life and must live a cloistered life! if you love her, then you must respect her, honor her, trust her, and shower her with lots of happiness. If this continues, she will want to be out of this relationship and may run far away from you. You should examine why you want to restrict her so much. You may have had a bad experience in life or in your home of origin to think like this. Meet with a counselor and determine where this insecurity comes from and learn to sort it out fruitfully and if you want to keep this girl for the rest of your life. This insecurity will push the girl away: the exact opposite of what you want and desire. Then you cannot blame the girl for your actions.

Excellent decision but would be willing to at least admit yourself into a hospital and go through detoxification for less than two weeks? If not you will need to admit yourself into a rehabilitation for at least 6 weeks. This type of treatment is ideal because it takes you away from the influences of people and circumstances that you have gotten conditioned to and will make it easier in a different geographical location. When you come out of the center you must continue with addiction counseling for three years at least before being free of the enslavement. You will also need to attend NA meetings regularly and get a lot of support from other users who are also recovering. You will need to make some lifestyle changes and work on the stress that is normally the reason most youngsters get addicted to codeine. There is also the oral issue, the rigid value system, the genetic factors, and the script issue that has to be worked upon with the counselor. You will need to start regular vigorous exercise, sleep well, and start on a healthy diet. You must follow a tight time schedule with interesting and productive activities. The counselor will also teach you new ways of finding joy without the use of chemicals. You should socialize with people, join new groups, attend conferences, meetings, seminars etc. to be involved with other important activities in your neighborhood. You will need to go for a thorough medical checkup and determine that there was no serious damage to your body because of the abuse.

I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.
