Dear sir, My brother is about 28 year old and resides in Agra. His pronunciation in not clear. (भरी भरी आवाज़ हे |) he sounds high and unclear words. Sometimes he mixes the words,(means speaks with high speed / frequency). In childhood he suffered with thyroid. We have given him full treatment for that. What should we do to make his voice clear, sharp and like a normal person? Is there are any clinics or doctors in AGRA who help him in practice speaking? Please advice.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, the best option is stammer therapy. Take care.

Hi, my daughter is 7 years old, she is having problem in pronouncing "sh" sound word like she says cash as cas or show as sow. She pronounce sh as s. Please suggest any medication or exercise to clear her voice.

Dear Lybrate user. Practice makes things perfect. Pronunciation is typical in the case of young children. Every child should not be measured with the same measurement. Let the child take her time to learn the pronunciation. You may approach any speech therapist in the meantime if it is required. Take care.

I want to become singer and my voice is at that level so I want a tips about how to maintain my voice.

Ph. D - Psychology
Psychologist,
Drink water:- drinking water is great for your vocal health. Load up on h20 to keep your vocal folds hydrated, healthy and ready to go. Breath down low:- in order to get a strong, healthy singing voice, you must utilize your lungs and diaphragm, breathing low and deep. Tighten your diaphragm when you sing:- this will make your voice stronger. Keep good posture.

Is stammering or stuttering a disease? How can it be cured? Are there any medicines? How can it be controlled? Is there any exercises?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

My brother is 15 years old. He is not able to speak sentences properly he has a iq of 70 but not suffering from autism or other mental disorder. Was weak in studies, but able to do calculations upto 2-3rd std. What should we do. Is he able to live normal life like marriage etc.

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Since he comes under the definition of mild mental retardation (now called general intellectual disability), he will always have limitations in his daily living. Still an I q of 70 means that he can manage most of the routine things with little assistance. You and your parents should focus on training him for self care, travel, communication and perhaps a simple vocation that he can turn into an occupation. Marriage, like any other legal contract, requires both parties (bride and groom) to fully understand the nature of the contract, at the time of the alliance. The iq by itself doesn't matter. Every person with an iq of 70 will have different levels of understanding. That is the legal angle. So he can get married. However, focus on making him as independent as possible.

Yes. Stammer may be caused by stress and tension. Take relaxation training from a psychologist plus you do pranayaam as taught by baba ramdev on astha channel 5.30 to 7 am. Very very effective- esp anulom-vilom, bramri and udgit are a must. You will get miraculous results!

My son is 3.2 years old, he has lisping in his words, is it terminate itself as he grows or something has to be done from our side I e to look after the doctor in the same, please advice.

Advance Course in Neuro linguistic Programming, Diploma In Dyslexic Studies, Masters In Psychological Counselling
Psychologist, Mumbai
Lisping could be due to physiological and psychological reasons. Among the physiological factors are the functioning of the tongue, the vibration of the vocal cords, the cleft of the pallet etc. You need to first identify wether it is a developmental issue by consuling a speech language therapist (slp. Once that is ruled out then you need to address the psychological issues.

I am 18 years old boy. I am having puberphonia. All ENT doctors prescribed me to take voice therapy (vocal exercise). What is mean by vocal exercise? Can you explain me? How they do that?

Master of Speech Language Pathology
Speech Therapist, Bangalore
Puberphonia is a condition where a male have a high pitch (female like) after puberty. This is common in adolescence. Voice therapy is important to lower the pitch which should match your age gender and body built. There are specific exercises which needs to be followed regularly. Vocal exercises means using voice in most efficient way. Thank you.
