Eye Exams: Why Are They Important?

Hello friends, I am Dr Minal Kaur I am a practising comprehensive ophthalmologist at my family clinic Greenfield Colony in Faridabad. My core areas of interests are a preventive health care, cataract surgery and medical retina. As my clinic name suggests my goal is to provide you and your family with total personalised eye care services. Coming this Children’s day around the corner I would like to discuss with you the eye care for your child. When suggesting an eye examination, we are commonly encountered with questions, like mere bacche ne kabhi koi shikayat nahi ki, ise ankhon ki examination ke kya zarurat hai. To counter these questions let me share with you with this brilliant infographics, as the caregiver we must realize that 80% of what our child learns is due to vision. Visuals skills are plenty, it is not just sight. It is a visual activity or how well do the eyes resolve things, eye teaming, eye focusing, eye tracking the eye head co-ordination as well as numerous reflexes in our brain which allows us to see and follow and fix a gaze in whatever position our body may be and whatsoever speed. Believe it or not, besides the routine refractive errors wind and the lazy eye, the child’s eye may also be affected by certain diseases that we assumed that occur only in adults or old age. These may be a cataract, Glaucoma, retinal disorders and rarely even cancers. The 15 years as an eye care professional, it has been a very rewarding experience seeing kids and how their visual systems have evolved, making sure that their eyes are healthy and ensuring that they have sufficient visual skills that will fulfil the visual demand in the coming years. Eyes are one of the most precious gifts of sights and I only emphasise more on our role in maintaining and preserving this gift. After all, 80% of blindness is avoidable. So at now be smart and book your annual eye checkups for you and your family. If you have any queries you can get in touch with me through this user-friendly platform by Lybrate. Wishing you a healthy life,

Thank You.

Current studies are encouraging about treatment for lazy eye may show improvement even at age of 20. Especially if no treatment has been tried previously. Whether the vision in your eyes will improve or not depends on severity and cause of lazy eye. U need to consult an eye doctor in person for a complete evaluation. As to you ear problems. U should undergo treatment from an ENT surgeon.

Since your baby has undergone a glaucoma surgery. The raised area is most likely to be a been. Since the normal drainage path of the eye fluid is not enough some glaucoma surgieres creat a bypass. And that is drained thru that area creating a filtering bleb. I encourage you to discuss your apprehension with your operating surgeon on the next sxhedulednfollow up. It should turn out to be ok.

Eye Care During Diabetes!

Eye Care During Diabetes!

Diabetes is a condition characterized by an elevated level of the blood glucose due to the insufficient production of the Insulin by the Beta cells of the pancreas. The high blood glucose level can also be an outcome of the inability of the body cells to utilize or respond to the insulin produced - a condition termed as Insulin Resistance.

Today, Diabetes has become a raging problem affecting almost every second individual, irrespective of their age, sex or ethnicity. What is even worse is the fact that the metabolic disorder affects a host of the vital body organs including the eyes. In many diabetic patients (diabetes left unmanaged and uncontrolled for long), the high blood sugar or Hyperglycemia can give rise to many eye complications such as:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy (Hyperglycemia that triggers progressive damage of the blood vessels of the retina that can eventually even lead to blindness).
  • Incidences of Cataract (a condition that causes clouding of the clear eye lenses affecting one's vision) and Glaucoma (a severe eye problem that results from the damages to the optic nerve of the eye) are on a rise in diabetic patients.

Thus, it becomes essential to carry out the preventive measure to deal with diabetes-related eye problems and the associated complications.

Protecting the eyes from Diabetes

  1. Controlling Diabetes: Amongst different eye care or preventive measures, foremost is to make sure that diabetes and the blood glucose level are within control. A glucometer can help to monitor the blood glucose levels at home. Regular lab tests for Fasting and Post prandial(FBS, PP2BS) blood sugar tests should be done at a frequency advised by treating physician along with HbA1c. Eliminating the underlying factor can work wonders to avoid the various eye problems resulting from diabetes.
  2. Regular eye-checks: People with diabetes need to be careful. Consult your family physician or a specialist at the earliest for discomforts and symptoms such as a headache, watery eyes, blurred, distorted or double vision. Regular eye-checks and screening tests are equally important to safeguard the eyes from the harmful consequences of diabetes.
  3. Keep a check on other medical disorders: Conditions such as Hypercholesterolemia (elevated levels of blood cholesterol), high blood pressure, along with diabetes, are the worst nemesis that can result in a myriad of eye disorders. Make sure the blood pressure is within the control (to avoid complications, try to maintain a blood pressure below 140/80) and so is the level of bad cholesterol or LDL (Low-density lipoprotein).
  4. Keep your body moving: Exercises and physical activities (morning or evening walks, jogging) can play a pivotal role in keeping diabetes under control, thereby shielding the eyes from problems such as cataract, glaucoma. Keeping the body weight within the healthy and recommended range can also work towards managing the blood glucose level.
  5. Healthy dietary modifications: Diabetic patients should be careful with their choice of foods. Dark chocolates, lean meat, whole grains, fish, cinnamon, turmeric, fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, blueberries, spinach, walnuts, sweet potatoes, asparagus, apricots, apples, to name a few are healthy options for a diabetic patient.
  6. Smoking can spell doom for the eyes and is best avoided.

Unfortunately Optic nerve cells once die can't regenerate. At least not yet. So none of the systems of medicine will be able to help regain lost nerve fibres. I hope you had a baseline visual field test done for left eye. I will also strongly recommend you have regular dilated comprehensive eye examination once a year to ensure your left eye remains healthy and in case of any disease it is detected at soonest.

Allergies have frequent recurrences...In spite of being on treatment. But it is important u continue on allergy stabilising drugs in long term as they decrease the severity, intensity n frequency of these recurrences. For the flare ups, soft steroids can be given to make eye comfortable Le in addition to good lubricants. Cold compresses also help. It is best to continue treatment under one consultant...easier to titrate n alter treatments.

For cataract, surgery is recommended when the patient experiences decreased vision which can' be improved further with glasses or associated symptoms like glare in daylight or at night while driving which impair and affect day to day activities. A complete dilated eye examination and tests for physical fitness for surgery will be required to plan a cataract surgery for his eyes to visually rehabilitate him.

Hello,
In summer rather hot weather I mostly face problem with my eyes. There will be frequent itching and irritation...
this is most likely due to dry eye or seasonal eye allergies. cold compresses and splashes of cold drinking water do provide some comfort. using lubricating eye drops with or without anti-allergic treatment will provide long term relief. An eye examination will help identify severity of condition and treatment with eye drops accordingly.

it is possible for infants to wear glasses using head bands.. in fact glasses will be important so that complete visual developement and teaming between 2 eyes can take place. It was good you were able to detect and surgically treat cataract in time.. but u still need to continue with treatment to ensure the best visual outcomes for your baby. your treating doctor will advice u on what power of glasses are to be used and how they should be maintained. just be sure to follow those instructions.
