Bad Breath - 5 Reasons You Might Suffer From It And What Can You Do About It

Dentist, Raipur
Bad Breath - 5 Reasons You Might Suffer From It And What Can You Do About It
Bad breath isn't just an indication of what you eat. Apart from being a turn off for people who come in contact with you, it could also hint at health problems.

Here are 5 reasons that cause bad breath and ways to overcome the same.

1) Unhealthy Teeth And Gums - Most of the bad breath and halitosis problems result due to unhealthy teeth and gums. Basically, people who don't take care of their dental hygiene are prone to the problem.
Solution - Clean your teeth and rinse your mouth properly to get rid of the annoying rotten egg stench.

2) Lack Of Hydration - If you are not drinking enough water, you can have bad breath. Saliva washes away smell causing bacteria. But not having enough water will lead to lesser saliva, which will lead to dead and rotting cells that will stink.
Solution - Drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water daily, at regular intervals.

3) Allergies - Nose and asthma related allergies are one of the leading causes of bad breath.
Solution - Make sure that you get rid of the allergies via proper care. Also, hydrate more when you have any allergy, like sinus problems or tonsil infection, it helps in clearing allergies out.

4) Eating the wrong stuff - Garlic, uncooked onion and too many spices can also lead to bad breath.
Solution - Use moderate spices and always rinse your mouth after each meal. Also, avoid foods that are high in sugar as they promote more bacteria.

5) Acid Reflux - If getting gaseous feeling in the pit of your stomach is a common problem for you, then you might have bad breath too. Heartburn, indigestion and acid reflux are common causes of bad breath.
Solution - Avoid foods that can cause a reflux and try light eating. It will take care of other health problems too.

Indications When You Need A RCT!

Indications When You Need A RCT!

The tooth may seem like a hard, white structure, but it has a complex supply of blood and nerve vessels that give it the essential nutrition. From outside in, the tooth has 3 layers the enamel which is the hard white substance, the dentin which is next, and then the pulp under it where there is a fine supply of blood vessels and nerves. When the pulp is affected in any manner, trauma or infection, then tooth pain ensues and requires treatment.
While extraction was the norm earlier, now all efforts are made to preserve a tooth. RCT preserves the natural tooth by removing the infected nerve and blood vessels, cleaning up the canal, and sealing the canals from inside so that further infection does not happen.

Why RCT?

Preserved chewing function, normal biting force and sensation, preserved natural appearance, and reduced strain on other teeth, thereby maintaining oral harmony. As complex as it may sound, it is usually done in 3 to 4 appointments, giving the tooth enough time to heal in between. The patient is iven antibiotics so that any infection is cleared out.

So, when should root canal treatment (RCT) be done?

  1. Infection: The most common indication of RCT would be infection. When decay crosses the enamel and dentin, which can be treated completely with simple restorations, and reaches the pulp, pain ensues. In fact, pain is the first symptom that decay has reached the pulp. Though in very superficial infections, it can be treated with pulp capping, in most cases, RCT is done to clear out the infection and preserve the tooth.
  2. Faulty dental procedures: If there has been a dental procedure done on the tooth earlier and it has failed, could be a crown or repeated fillings for decay, then RCT is the next logical decision.
  3. Cracked tooth: If there is a cracked tooth, especially vertical crack along the length of the tooth, then the chances that infection will reach the pulp through the crack are high. These teeth are usually root canal treated to preserve the natural dentition.
  4. Trauma or accidents: With the impact of the trauma, there might be no obvious damage to the tooth but it could lead to death of the vital pulp. These show up as discolored teeth over time. These require RCT and a crown placement.
  5. Teeth in the line of cancers or cysts: Before surgery or radiation is done, it is usually safe to root canal treat the tooth in the line of treatment (or sometimes remove them) before surgery or radiation is done.

Root canal treatment helps both by keeping the original tooth intact and by removing the danger that arises out of infection or trauma. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.
