There are a few instances where the ear appears to be misshapen or protruding either due to a defect at birth or due to an injury or an accident. They can lead to complications, and the only treatment available is the ear reconstruction surgery or the Ear Reconstruction treatment. It is a type of plastic surgery and called medically as otoplasty. The procedure involves reshaping the ear to the desired extent so that a natural look is achieved. The ear surgery is performed in cases where the ears protrude sideways giving an ungainly look, large ear lobes and lop ear (A condition in which the tip folds down and elongates forward). Ear surgeries are also used in treating shell ears - a condition where certain parts of the ear are missing. An otoplasty process involves cutting the cartilage which forms the base of any ear. Then the necessary amounts of cartilage are cut or reshaped to get the desired outlook. Then sutures are done to close the cut. A small cut to the back of the ear is made in both instances, and this heals over a period leaving a light scar. The procedure is mostly done as an outpatient one and the resting period would be in the range of two to three weeks. Dressing has to be worn for a few days and normal activities can be carried out afterward. Check-ups are advised once the healing process is over, and with proper medications, the condition is permanently solved.
