The food that we eat breaks down and passes through the intestine. Once the nutrients of the food are absorbed, the waste gets accumulated and passes out through the rectum. Sometimes this bodily discharge does not happen in a proper way leading to bowel impaction. This is also known as the fecal impaction of the colon. The symptoms of such cases include abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headache and in severe cases dehydration and hyperventilating with an increase in the heart rate. The primary causes of an impacted bowel are due to constipation. Other causes include medication side effects, illness, spinal cord injury and diseases such as diabetes or thyroid infections. Constipation is usually painful and once fecal impaction occurs it would be difficult to pass them out on our own. Disimpactions treatments include the doctor using various medications like laxatives to treat the symptom. In cases of severe scenarios, the doctor would be going for a manual removal using either enema or water irrigation. In enema, a small fluid-filled bottle with a nozzle is inserted into the rectum. Once the liquid gets squeezed inside the waste are removed. Irrigation is also similar where a tube in inserted into the rectum and connected to a machine. The machine pumps in the water and the waste products are quickly dislodged. There are chances that the conditions can return, hence proper care should be taken for preventing its reoccurrence. Having plenty of water and fiber-rich foods can avoid the condition from recurring.
