Sir ; good morning here I want to ask a question that my daughter is 98% deaf and dum so I want to know whether we have. Treatment for that so that she can hear and talk.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, first of all I would like to know the age of your daughter. If she is below 1-2 years old, then definitely she can listen and speak. You need to go for a complete battery of audiological test and after that a cochlear implant can be done. After the implant a auditory verbal therapy is required, and your daughter can start listening sounds n ultimately start speaking also.

Hearing Problems - Treatment Options For It!

Loss of hearing cannot be reversed or cured. However, it can be treated. Even people who have lost all hearing can hear sounds again with the help of modern medicine. Treatment for hearing loss depends on a number of factors. This includes the type of hearing loss, the severity of hearing loss, budget etc. The most common treatment options for a loss of hearing are:

Removal of Wax Blockage: Ear wax that accumulates in the inner ear canal is a common cause for temporary loss of hearing. In such cases, cleaning the ear wax can help restore hearing. This should not be attempted at home as damaging the ear canal can result in a permanent hearing loss. To remove the ear wax, a doctor will need to loosen it with oil and then suction out the softened wax.

SurgeryLoss of hearing caused due to a traumatic ear injury can be treated with surgery. This usually involves the insertion of small tubes to help fluid drain out of the ear. This surgery may also be beneficial in the case of temporary loss of hearing caused by recurrent infections.

Hearing Aids: Permanent loss of hearing is usually caused by damage to the inner ear. In such cases, a hearing aid can help. There are many different types of hearing aids available. These hearing aids work by amplifying the sound received and thus making it easier for a person to hear. Hearing aids are removable and can be taken off whenever needed. The most common types of hearing aids are:

  1. Behind the ear hearing aids – These are large, powerful hearing aids that are used to treat severe loss of hearing.
  2. In the ear hearing aids – These are small hearing aids that fit within the outer ear and can be used to treat mild to severe loss of hearing.
  3. In canal hearing aids – These are very small hearing aids that fit inside the ear canal and are thus not visible from outside. They are used to treat mild to moderate loss of hearing.

Cochlear ImplantsSevere hearing loss caused by irreparable damage to the inner ear canal can be treated with a cochlear implant. This works by amplifying sounds and transmitting them to the auditory nerves while bypassing the damaged ear canal. A cochlear implant needs to be surgically inserted behind the ear and can be used by children and adults. Cochlear implants have been successfully used to treat people who were born with a loss of hearing. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Dear lybrate user, first of all know whats the exact status, then the management will be much easier and fruitful by default. Go for puretone audiometry test. If you have a mixed kind of hearing loss then even after surgery you have to use hearing aids, if the result shows conductive type loss then no doubt you will be fine after surgery.

Hearing Loss in Children - Know The Signs That Indicate It!

You may find out that your child is suffering from hearing loss when he is born or he may be diagnosed with the condition later in life. Hearing loss in children is commonly caused by otitis media, birth problems and on the account of certain injuries or illnesses.

Signs and symptoms

The early stage symptoms of hearing loss in children are as follows:

  1. No reaction to extremely loud noises

  2. No response or reaction to your voice

  3. The child makes some sounds, which taper off

The other symptoms which follow include:

  1. He may pull and rub his ears.

  2. He may act cranky constantly without any proper reason.

  3. He might stop paying attention.

  4. Low energy levels are indicated.

  5. He may find it hard to follow directions.

  6. He may ask you to increase the volume of the radio or TV.

  7. Fever and ear pain are also likely symptoms.

Treatment

Early hearing loss can affect your child’s language learning skills. If the problem is diagnosed and treated soon, the problem with language can be avoided. The method of treatment depends on the cause of hearing loss in your child and the severity of hearing loss.

There are certain medicines for hearing---prescribed by your ENT Surgeon. Pleas take the point watchful waiting. Even if you have slightest doubt of hearing loss contact ENT immediately.

The primary treatment methods of hearing loss in children include the following:

  1. Watchful waiting: Sometimes, the condition may resolve on its own and the treatment involves simple monitoring of your child for positive changes.

  2. Medicines: There are certain medicines for hearing loss in children, which may be prescribed by your pediatrician.

  3. Ear tubes: Ear tubes may be recommended if medicines and monitoring do not work. The tubes allow fluid to drain and help in preventing infections. A minor surgery has to be undertaken on your child for getting the ear tubes placed. This will solve the hearing loss and other related issues.

  4. Hearing aids: Hearing aids may be used to allow your child hear better. It is safe for children to use ear tubes after the age of one month. For the right hearing aid for your child, you need to consult a hearing specialist.

  5. Implants: Cochlear implants are used to treat hearing loss in many children. These are electronic devices which are put in the inner ear to benefit hearing. These should be used only if hearing aids did not succeed and these are meant to be used only in case of children with serious hearing problems.
