I am 22 years old and I am at home from 3 months but the thing is I feel tired and exhausted at the end of day, I do have low self esteem and I think I have depression I don't know but I feel tiredness and lethargic sitting at home I have no work in my home but day by day my self esteem is getting lower and I am getting more depressed . I want some medications for depression . I think I have depression and anxiety Why sitting at home causes anxiety and depression Empty mind is devil's workshop ,why sitting idle causes problems in life because in meditation we observe our thoughts and when we are idle we come across the same thoughts or wandering mind thoughts so why it is said that idle mind is devils workshop.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated. Your depression needs to be evaluated, if mild option is cbt, cognitive behavior therapy alone or along with medicines, if moderate both, if severe, medication s mainly and later cbt.

I have a depression and stress and some physical problem like sleep to much and don't want to eat. Other people said me why you haven't a job and you are lazy. I can't work in any type. I can't study well and can't do exercise.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
When one is in a depression, he feels like he 'can't' do many things. This, of course, is not true but due to lethargy, which is different from laziness, causes a sense of inertia. Under the influence of lethargy you will not feel like doing things, getting up from the bed, working, and even the effort to put into thinking, etc. Laziness is as a good as a choice and has more to do with unwillingness. Even so, you need to fight this condition. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Thanks for posting your query. First you need support from your family and friends, from people who are near you and can help you while in danger. In such cases is better combine pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy. Also you can add to your daily routine relaxation techniques, better if you will consult psychiatrist who can advice you above mentioned combination of medication and psychotherapy. I appreciate that you have noticed your problem early. Please do write back in case you have follow up queries to ask.

After drinking alcohol he feels as if he his body is someone else's. So what should he do? Should he STOP drinking?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, either drink does not agree with him or he is drinking too much and has been for too long. This effect that you describe does not means that he is just getting drunk, it means that he is getting partially psychotic with the effect. In time he could get what is called 'toxic psychosis' and that could be trouble. Advise him to stop immediately and he will return to normal soon and he will not be pushing for a mental break down.

I just don't enjoy the things I used to, and I don't feel much like visiting friends or family. Is this part of aging?

Dear , not necessarily this is due to ageing. I think your attitude has changed. Attitude changes due to many reasons. You are in your middle age. During middle age, every one are conscious about their career, past achievements and future plans. Most think that they could not achieve maximum and therefore become slightly depressed and start working harder. I think, that is your problem. Can you provide me more information? take care.

I am 20 yrs old female. I lose control on myself when I get angry. I started throwing things. This is happening with me from last few months. I dont know how can I cope with all.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If this has been happening only in the last few months, then look back and see what event had triggered this much of anger. If not, it is possible that a long pending anger is finally getting out with this degree of violence because it has piled-up so much that it is coming out in bits and pieces. In that case, there may be some unresolved issue in childhood that cumulatively is forcing itself out at this juncture because this is your late adolescence and the feeling cannot be contained any further due to the levels of testosterone. Meet with a counselor and discuss your past to find out the location and genesis of this anger and make some effort to resolve the same with that person. You do need others? help but a professional will be ideal. Your parents may know some things about your early childhood to throw some light. You could take them for the initial session to share their information with the counselor. The counselor will help you with anger management lessons and you will definitely feel better. You may also work out much of the anger with vigorous exercises, meditation and yoga. If it is too much and you are a spiritual person, you could hand over the anger to god and feel completely great. If you find that certain people have been responsible for this anger in you, you must learnt to forgive them for your own sake. You may not forget (because that takes a long time) but with forgiveness you could move on with your life and live peacefully. Currently your acting anger out in this manner will get you into trouble with all and sundry and you will lose friends and companions. You will become a loner too, and may at some point become depressed. Your youth is in your favor and if you are cooperative, this can be done and dusted soon.

Dear Lybrate user, Anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Take care.

I have been smoking from 3 years and daily 5 to 6 cigars. Will I get cancer? Please advise.

DNB, DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
This are harms of smoking --- Smoking is a huge risk for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accounting for more than 75 percent of all deaths from these disorders. Smoking doubles the risk for cardiovascular disease deaths, but, because this disease is more prevalent, it accounts for as many smoking deaths as cancer and lung disease. The third major cause of tobacco-related mortality is chronic obstructive lung disease. Other common smoking-related diseases include low-birth-weight offspring, perinatal complications, other cancers (e.g., throat, bladder, and pancreas), and ulcers. Second-hand smoke increases the risk of cancer and heart disease in spouses and the incidence of respiratory and ear problems in children. The tar in cigarette smoke is responsible for the cancers. Irritants and ciliotoxins appear to be responsible for lung diseases. Carbon monoxide and clotting factors appear to be the most likely causes of cardiovascular disease. The role of nicotine in cardiovascular disease appears to be much smaller than previously thought, and how many perinatal problems (including sudden infant death syndrome) are caused by carbon monoxide or by nicotine is debatable. Smokeless tobacco, pipes, and cigars cause oral cancers, especially when accompanied by heavy alcohol use.

I am in early sixtys. Surviving with only. Completed responsibilities (settled my daughters) except purchasing/building residence of my own and sufficient bank balance to pull on till last breath of either of us. This sometimes take me to depression. How to deal with it?

Start counting the achievements in life and feel happy about it. You have made a worthwhile contribution and now is the time to sit back and relax. If possible, try to reach out to those who are less better off than you. Try to give them what they need most- maybe just a few caring words---see the smile on their face brought on by your words,--you will feel elated!

It is the problem now every youth is facing. They watch pornoraphy in that they compare thier size. When compared to foreigners our size is very small. Based on this youth developed inferiority complex. They have doubt that we perform very well or not. Because of this some youth postponed marriage also. Initial days onwards you go medicine after that it may be addiction. Without medicine you are unable to do that. So power may increase day by day. It may leads some other problem. Suppose you partner and her mothers knows they may be chance to comment on your power. They said this person is has not having sexual problems. Your partner may also complain that please come without medicine. So you may so many problems. Physical as well as psychological problems. So do not depend on medicine. Do as a natural manner. They are not using any medicine why do you prefer medicine. Go with full confidence. You may succeed definitely. So please follow my suggestions. I have seen so many cases related to this problems. For that reason I give this advise. So please follow. Best of luck.

Relationships are based on trust. Talk to your husband openly and confess with him if you are at fault. Promise him that it will not repeat in future. In a marriage nothing should be confided. This will lead to misunderstanding. Make effort to show your love to him. Make him feel that your husband is very important in your life. Build confidence.

Mam or sir I feel very lonely n stressful as nobody is there with whom I can talk or share my feelings.

M.Sc Applied Psychology, Advanced Diploma Child Guidance & Counselling
Psychologist, Delhi
Hello we all do face situations which make feel lonely, sad etc. Everyone need people to share their feelings and form connections. But its also true that we ourselves can bring change. For this you need to motivate yourself and promise yourself that you will bring change in yourself. You can engage yourself into some hobby classes like cooking or art and craft. As you start going there, you may start connecting with the people around. May be soon you find any good friend. Writing diary daily could also be good option to let your feelings out. It will help you to understand the reasons for these feelings. All the best, please feel free to give your feedback.
