According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of depression may include the following: • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions • Fatigue and decreased energy • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping • Irritability, restlessness • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, includingsex • Overeating or appetite loss • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment • Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts Almost all psychotropic drugs have side effects and you cannot help that. But if you maintain a healthy lifestyle these effects can always be minimized. Also if you go episode-free for at least three years on medication, the doctor will gradually wean you off of the medication forever.

I have fallen in deep love with my friend, she is not from my religion - she is hindu brahmin girl. But I am totally mad for her, I feel so attracted towards her that I frequently masturbate imagining her, I watch her photo in my phone for hours, and always think of good moments we shared together, I hear our recorded conversation when I feel low, she just know I like her but she is unaware of my deep feelings for her as I didn't tell her my true feelings. Some times I do feel I love her but I am scared of the consequences it can have on both of us. We both hail from very conservative families. So, marriage is simply impossible, but I really love her and want her to spent her whole life with me. But the problem is I am already in a relationship and she knows that and my GF is her best friend. Because of this she started avoiding me and deliberately moving away from me, I know she too have feelings for me but she is hiding it deep inside her heart for the sake of her friendship or may be fear of society. Please help me what to do now?

you know marriage with her is impossible. I believe you eish good for her and never want to harm her. You also have a girl friend who is her friend also. Do justice to this relationship and have a nice life with her. You may come across another girl in life and get attracted to her and think you are in love and can't live without her. So every thing you and your mind desires can not be acquired in life. we have to put boundaries and live in our own limits and lead life. you are in fantasy love with the girl and also believe that the girl also had love for you. This is out wishes and trying to justify our wishes. this is not correct. love your girlfriend more and lead a good life with her.

I used to smoke 12-13 cigarettes everyday. So what is the damage I am getting can you tell me about that?

There are too many harmful effects because of smoking. But here are a few to ruminate up on with the intention of either making you stop or to never start again. It has more than 4000 chemical substances most of which are harmful. It affects your stamina, breathing, forms skin wrinkles. Bad for your heart, bad for bad cholesterol, it can lead to strokes, dental problems, eye problems, cancer, brain cell death, vascular problems, throat problems, voice difficulties, etc. The list is quite endless. It is so bad that there is an international battle to dissuade smoking. Each cigarette you smoke has an effect on your erectile capacity: the nicotine in the cigarette is a vasoconstrictor i. E. It narrows the blood vessels to constrict the blood flow. The erection of the penis is caused by an extra flow of blood to the penis along with a shut down valve that facilitates its engorgement. This action will be compromised. Your bp rises with every cigarette you smoke. But to me the biggest danger is that, in time, dependence and tolerance will develop so that you will want more cigarettes in order to have the same effect as when you started smoking with only one or two. Now, the bluff that we all went through when we were teens was this belief (really a denial) that, if we want, we can stop at any time we choose. That unfortunately does not work: it is a deceptive bluff.

You should quit both. Both alcohol and tobacco can cause several physical and mental health problems. There are good medications available which can help in deaddiction. You should consult a good psychiatrist.

Dear lybrate user. This is never part of aging. Even aged people / senior citizen know how to enjoy life. You do not know why are you not enjoying as you used to. But on talking to you, we will be able to understand why you are unhappy or why are you enjoying as you used to do. Therefore you need to talk to a psychologist. Enjoyment / happiness is based on perceptions. There could be some wrong perceptions from your side. Take care.

It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. Don't cut off from friends or family, even if you feel like you want to be alone. You can contact me for further help, if required.

It is called amnesia- it can occur at times after head injury. Do not panic- neither let your friend panic. Try to keep him happy and gradually introduce people to him and let him remember at his own pace. Time is the biggest healer in such cases.

Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. First try counselling which is a non medical way of overcoming anxiety. You will learn to respond differently to stressful social situations and discover helpful ways to remain in control of yourself. Medications have their side effects and only takes care of the chemical imbalance. It will not teach you coping mechanisms.

It looks like your level of tolerance is quite high. If you are under stress you are likely to become intolerable and suffer with a short fuse. Meet a counselor to identify the stress. You need to identify why you get so angry. If this is a recent phenomenon, then it will be easy to identify what caused that disturbance and it can be sorted out. If it is from your childhood and you have suffered this reaction for a long time, then you will need to go back into childhood and find out what went wrong to make you so upset. Your parents will be able to help locate the cause. You can then go to a counselor and learn about anger management, which is not to control your anger but to learn to express it in appropriate ways. You must also examine yourself to see if you act angry whenever you are scared. This then means that you have chosen to escalate anger over your fear for some reason: it may have to do with feeling more powerful with anger than with fear or you may have received more attention by acting angry. Work on these issues and come out of this behavior through some counseling.

Sir/mam I am studying mbbs 5 th sem and about to complete in nxt month. I hv a problem of of tension I feel tensed for even a minute reason. I study hard and harder people appreciate my hard work but when it comes tio exams I will not able to memorize things which learn clearly ,feel tensed my heart starts throbbing, sweating ,shivering. I was one among top 10 rankers in my school and college I never had such prob during my schooling days but started in college days. I could not even bag a good rank inspite of good performance in college exams. After all I decided to meet psychiatry in my college they asked me thyroid profile wch was absolutely normal. One of pg suggested to use toficalm 50 mg twice daily can I use it .suggest some drug wch can abolish my tension stress without affecting CNS or wch I can use even during exams. One thing I forgot to tell I drink too much of tra during exams to stay awake and won't sleep. Please help me out.

lybrate-user, after going through your narrative, I feel that you are having Generalized anxiety disorder. This can be managed with yoga and pranayam, to a significant extent. If you consult or being referred to clinical psychologists, they will teach you relaxation training and cognitive behaviour therapy or mindfulness therapy. If your anxiety is still considerable, then you may be prescribed few drugs. I can understand how much it is affecting your academic performance and your self esteem. It can be definitely managed with yoga or by relaxation training etc. Please consult a psychiatrist. I wish you overcome your distress and do well in life.

First of all you should follow some basic thing 1. Avoid=hot and cold at time 2. Less the sugar as much as possible if you want to eat sweet take juggery which is black 3. Do not drink water after meal drink at the time of meal sip by sip up to 150 ml 4. Avoid late night sleep 5. Sarswatarishta 4 tsp after lunch and dinner 6. Audumbaravleha 2 tsp before lunch and dinner.
