My brother is having a stammering problem from his childhood. Now,he is 25 years old and is a doctor. But that problem is not gone. We have shown him to the ENT doctors and they have concluded that there is no defect in his throat. That problem has taken a mental illness and he is under total depression and not ready to do further studies and always remains in angry mood. We have also shown him to the speech therapists but it is of no use for his problem. How can his problem be tackled efficiently and effectively?

M.Phil clinical psychology
Psychologist, Gurgaon
Stammering could have neurological, medical or psychological causal factors. Consult a neurologist first and get all investigations if it is a neurological problem. Sometimes, due to anxiety also people have trouble like this and stammering is the result. For psychological reason, consult a clinical psychologist who may use behavior therapy principles in its treatment management. Lastly, I would also like to tell you sometimes due to such problems, people develop depression and stress as they have difficulty in normal conversation and they feel frustrated. So dealing with frustration is also important point to be kept in mind in their treatment option.

I have negative thinking and depression problem.
I always feel I'm not correct in all matters.
Negative thinking is a part of depression itself. So is feeling of being wrong in everything. If you have been having this feeling of sadness of mood and depression for a long time then you should not hesitate to consult a psychiatrist and consider treatment in form of medicines and counseling. Depression occurs in almost 8-12 % of people and is a treatable disorder.

To quit smoking, you should develop a strong will power. You should be committed to it. First make a determination that you are going to leave smoking. Then start decreasing the number of cigarettes you smoke. Try to learn how smoking affects your health and your organs. See the effects of smoking. Put these deadly pictures in front of you. Hi lybrate-user It is important to note that you recognize there is a problem and you want to work on it and improve. A detailed assessment would be required in order to understand the reasons why you feel you are at fault. If the problem is primarily depression then you may experience irritability, low self esteem, and negative thinking thereby blaming yourself for even reasons beyond your control. For this you will benefit from being on medication to improve depression. On the other hand if there are certain personality traits that you need help to improve then you should seek counselling and therapy. In the meantime make a written note of situations (like a diary) which make you feel you are at fault and reflect on areas of improvement.

Such dreams happen once or twice. Please do not generalize those dreams and worry. Such worries brings anxiety and obsession. Ignore the thoughts. Engage in heavy exercises for 15 days to help you sleep soundly.
