Yes, sometimes suicide runs in families. If there is depression, then there could be suicide drives not too far behind. You must take double precautions knowing the history of the family. The genetic factor is pretty strong in you. But not everything is lost, if you cooperate, with both counseling and medication. If you went for counseling too a lot can be done and resolved. So apart from the medication you need the help of a counselor who will equip you with coping skills and techniques to handle the daily pressures in life, including meeting and socializing with people. You can also speak about the recent developments and find a way of sorting those out too, everyday. Relying only on the chemical intervention is grossly insufficient. By just popping in pills how do you hope to develop skills and tools to manage life?! You can follow these simple rules too: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly.

I am 26, Please let me know, what are the best daily ways to improve my memory and concentration.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Without concentration the mind goes here, there and everywhere, jumping like a monkey from branch to branch, idea to idea. When there is a natural concentration, we can control our mind and there is peace. This one-pointed concentration on a thought, holding it for as long as we like, gradually collects strength in the mind and in the self. A strong mind is a mind that is peaceful, stable, satisfied and can remain in the deeper meaning of a thought. There is no waste caused by over-thinking, or the high speed of thought: These are the two greatest diseases of the mind these days, which is why there is so much stress and mental breakdown. Stress can foil concentration and learning ability. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. Concentration precedes memory. If you are under stress your concentration will go for a toss, then naturally memory will be totally foiled. So meet with a counselor to take care of the stress and your memory will happily return. You can follow these simple rules in the meantime: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Now take you pick!

Hello, there are few food items which helps you in boosting up your memory power, increases focus & concentration, so try to take more of these: 1. Choline: good sources of choline include liver, milk, eggs and peanuts. 2. Vitamin b: b vitamins are not synthesized in the body, and thus need to be obtained from food. B-complex vitamins are water-soluble vitamins, which means that they are not stored within the body. In consequence, the b vitamins need ongoing replenishment. Vitamin b1 (thiamine) rich sources include unrefined grain products, ready-to-eat cereals, meat (especially pork), dairy products, peanuts, legumes, fruits and eggs. Foods that contain high concentrations of vitamin b3 (niacin) in the free form include beans and organ meat, as well as enriched grain and cereal products. While niacin is present in corn and other grains, the bioavailability of the nutrient is much less than it is in protein-rich sources. The role of vitamin b9 (folic acid) during pregnancy is vital to normal development of the nervous system in the fetus. Good sources of folate include liver, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, beans, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, and orange juice. Animal protein products are a good source of vitamin b12 (cobalamine), particularly organ meats such as kidney or liver. Other good sources are fish, eggs, and dairy products. 3. Vitamin a: the foods highest in vitamin a are any pigmented fruits and vegetables and leafy green vegetables. 4. Zinc: zinc is a very important part of the brain as well; many regions of the brain, such as the cerebellum, and hippocampus have neurons that contain this nutrient. Zinc is needed to maintain normal vitamin a levels in blood plasma. Sources of zinc are meats, certain seafood, whole grains, baked beans, oatmeal, milk (low-fat), cashewnut, almonds, kidney-beans, cheese, peas, spinach, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine for increasing memory - anacardium 200/ once daily.

There can be genetic factors, developmental factors and the inability to cope. In all this, emotions play a very significant role. Depression can be due to unexpressed emotions like sadness and anger. When it is anger related, suicide comes in as an option. I will give you some measures than can be taken to counter depression in this small advice: 'I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Dear, in simple words depression can not be cured by any medicine, you have to apply your thoughts to cure it. What is the problem of your depression? if you think deeply of past experiences then the depression will be more stronger. So you have to stop thinking past, just go ahead and think positive. Do meditation for a while while you feel depression, learn to say no to people who doesn't care of your feelings. Rather than these few medicine will helpful to overcome from depression and will boost your internal energy to fight you from depression. 1-aurum met 1000/3 doses at bed time (once in 15 days). 2-kali phos 6x (4 tab 4 times in a day). 3-tranquil tab (2 tab 4 times in a day).

Dear, Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. But still you will need will power. You may consult a physician or deaddiction therapist or a rehabilitation facility for further advise. Take care.

Signs that You are Suffering from an Anxiety Disorder

Signs that You are Suffering from an Anxiety Disorder

All individuals get nervous or anxious at some point of time or the other due to a plethora of reasons. But for some individuals, anxiety becomes so frequent and forceful, that it overpower their lives. Normal anxiety is often short lived, but the feeling may last for few hours. However, an anxiety problem becomes an anxiety disorder when anxious feelings are very intense and last for weeks or months. Anxiety disorder exists in different forms like panic attacks, social anxiety and phobia.

The most common form of anxiety is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) during which an individual worries too much about everyday things and situations, both large and small. The person in this condition has persistent anxious thoughts on most days of the week, for six months. Moreover, the anxiety is so overpowering that it interferes with daily life and is coupled by noticeable symptoms like fatigue. The anxiety level goes to such an extent that causes a lot of dysfunction and suffering. If a person suffers from sleep problems and finds himself regularly awake and agitated or worried, then it is a tell-tale sign of generalized anxiety disorder. This is followed by a situation when one wakes up overstimulated with mind racing and one is unable to calm down.

When the anxiety is tied to a specific situation and the fear is overwhelming and out of proportion to the actual risks then the condition is phobia. This can be due to anything ranging from crowd, animals to flying in an aeroplane or using an escalator. Muscle tension like clenching of jaw or fists or flexing of muscles though out the body always accompanies anxiety disorders. Regular exercise can help keep muscle tension under control, but the tension may get triggered up if an injury or other unforeseen event disrupts a person's workout habits. Panic disorder is repeated, unexpected panic attacks where one encounters panic in a situation where most people wouldn’t be afraid. Anxiety also leads to chronic digestive problems like cramping and bloating of stomach.

Social phobia or social anxiety disorder occurs when one develops an intense fear of being judged or embarrassed in public. People with social anxiety disorder have a tendency to worry for weeks leading to an event or situation. When and if they manage it, they tend to be deeply uncomfortable and are always judgemental about it. In case of social anxiety disorder, the anxiety is triggered by everyday situations like one-on-one conversation at a get-together, or eating and drinking in front of small group. The person feels that everybody is watching him and experiences profuse sweating, trembling, nausea and person becomes tongue-tied. These disruptions make it hard for the person to meet new people and maintain relationships.

Panic disorder causes terrifying panic attacks when the person experiences a sudden gripping feeling of fear and helplessness which lasts for several minutes. It is generally accompanied with scary symptoms like breathing problems, a pounding heart, numb hands and sweating.

Excessive fear of being separated from home or a loved one is separation anxiety disorder. Post -traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder in which the patient relives a disturbing or traumatic event like a violent encounter, the sudden death of a loved one.

An anxiety disorder affects the thinking, feelings as well as behaviour of a normal person. It’s important to seek professional help if one see any of the warning signs of anxiety disorders in an individual.

I am 67 years old and was working after retirement also till a few months ago. Immediately after retirement I started feeling some sort of anxiety and depression for which I consulted a psychologist who suggested to do blood test and after that prescribed thyronorm50 tablet for sometime and some sleeping tablets since I was having sleep disturbance also at that time. Since there was no relief after 3 months ,I contacted him again and he referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed Nitravet 10 and Symbal20 which I started taking and the things improved and as per the Doctors advice I withdrew it slowly. For next 6 months I was O.K but again started having the same symptoms. So I consulted the Doctor who advised me to start taking the medicine again which I did. This process is going on for the last 7 years and kindly advise me a permanent solution for withdrawing the medicines and live a normal life. I was having sleep disorders and I am continuing it for the last 7 years eventhough in between we stopped the other medicine except Thyronorm which is now increased to 75 mg after seeing the 6 monthly blood tests. Kindly advice.

The psychologist who prescribed medications is a quack, he has no business prescribing thyronorm and sleeping bills, report him to the authorities. You might be having chronic depression, follow your psychiatrist advise, and if needed meet a clinical psychologist with rci (rehabilitation council of india) registration for counselling.
