I am 75 years plus, was diagnosed with diabetes about 7 years ago and am on metformin 500 bd, galvus 50 bd, telma 80 od, atorva 10 od and atenolol 50 od. The diabetic parameters are within permissible limits ,tested six monthly. Doctor says since the above medicines appear to be controlling the disease, continue for life. Is this safe and right or is any periodic regulation required.

Mr. Lybrate-user, the medicines being taken are quite safe, hence can be continued for long time. Whether for life time is difficult to answer. Because as one get old, blood glucose control varies. Similarly kidney function may get affected due to diabetes itself. Periodic assessment is always required. Thanks.

Eat a diet less in calories, fats and sugars. So cut down on all fried foods, sweets, chocolates and junk stuff like pepsi, coke etc; increase the proteins in your diet like chicken, fish, dals, beans etc; replace white bread for brown bread or chappati. Have enough vegetables, fruits and water daily. In addition do regular exercise.

Chewing gum may be made popular as a style statement in the recent past, but in reality, it is as ancient as the aztecs and the mayans, who had the habit of chewing gum or bark. To control diabetes do regular exercise like swimming,skipping,yoga,push up,sit up,yoga.Avoid fast foods,junk foods,processed foods,sweetened juice.Avoid underground vegetables.pumpkin,banana.Take lots of whole fruits,vegetables.Take extra protein like egg white,fish,lean meat,cottage cheese,tofu,mushroom.Use healthy fat like olive,canola,refined vegetable oil in small amount.Drink lots of water specially before meals.Use fenugreek seeds with 1/2 glass water on an empty stomach in the morning.Adjust your medicine with diet.If you maintain proper diet and do exercise your medicinal dose will reduce or even you do not need to take medicine. Your child's risk is doubled if you developed diabetes before age 11 in case of type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes runs in families.

Dear you can easily gain weight and get a healthy muscular body by following these best things - 1. To gain weight, your digestion should work properly. If you have any disease of digestive system you should treat disease first. For proper digestion - take 10 gms powder of carom seeds (ajwain, 10 gm powder of cumin (jeera), 10 gm of rock salt.
