I am 20 years old, but my weight is above 120. So what I have to do to reduce my weight?

You will have to work real hard.Patience is the key Our Daily energy requirements for proper functioning of our body is 1600-2200 K cal of Energy if we want to remain fit and healthy. But there is a misconception that weight is reduced by dieting. But weight is not reduced by only skipping our meals or prohibition from sugars but until we are not aware what are our body energy requirements ,it will be difficult to loose weight. If we restrict ourself from taking daily diet to 1100-1200 Kcalories ,and increases our workouts, only then we can think about reducing our weight and for that we must obtain proper knowledge of exact energy levels in a particular dish we are eating, only then we can achieve our target of reducing weight by means of simple mathematical calculation. Diet Plan for Weight Loss (1200 calories) Food Item Amount Calories (kcal) Protein (g) Early Morning Lukewarm water with lemon 1 cup Tea (without sugar) 1 cup 35Kcal 4g Marie biscuits 2 56 Kcal Breakfast Skimmed milk with sugar 1 glass 90 Kcal 8g Brown bread upma 1 plate 205 Kcal 6g OR Besan Chilla 2 290 Kcal 12g Mid-Morning Fruit salad 1 small bowl 40 Kcal Lunch Veg Khichdi 1 medium bowl 202.5 Kcal 9.5g Veg raita 1 small bowl 75 Kcal 3.5g Mix veg salad 1 bowl 30 Kcal 2g Evening Tea (without sugar) 1 cup 35 Kcal 4g Wheat rusk 2 120 Kcal 6g Dinner Missi roti (without oil) 2 200 Kcal 6g Mix veg 1 medium bowl 95 Kcal 4g Curd 1 small bowl 30 Kcal 1.5g Total 1213 kcal 54.5 g

Its a myth that Fats make us fat. So, Desi Ghee does not make us fat, if you use it on a right way
Desi Ghee is one of the most misunderstood foods in India. Reason ? Marketing vegetable oils as the Hero
Vitamins A, D, E, and K present in Ghee are fat-soluble. This means Ghee helps is to absorb these vitamins.
Ghee has MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids ) , which is better than PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) found in oils like corn, sunflower, cottonseeds oils etc. Thus Desi Ghee is a better choice than these oils.
Ghee does not contain lactose, hence it is safe for lactose intolerant people.
Ghee is made up of short chain fatty acids which can be digested easily. This nature also helps to break fat.
Ghee provides lubrication to muscles and joints.
It helps improve digestion power.
It nourishes body tissues, suitable for people of all ages.
It strengthens sense organs, immunity,
It improves tone and strength of the voice.
If you have very dry skin, then ghee will come to the rescue very effectively. Just warm up ghee in a pan and massage your whole body with it before bath. Do this treatment regularly, especially during winter time and your skin will be smooth, soft and supple.
Ghee when consumed with high calorie foods will aid in weight gain. If you want to gain weight try consuming calorie dense food along with ghee. The surprising thing is ghee also can help in weight loss. When you consume a little of ghee along with a sensible diet, it actually aids in weight loss

I'm very confused about pros and cons of tea n coffee. Is tea/coffee good for health or not?

Diploma in Anesthesia, MBBS

Any thing in excess is bad including tea/coffee. tea and coffee contain some chemicals if taken in excess will disturb the systems in the human body. so taking one or two cups of tea/coffee is not harmful and some minor benefits to the body, but if you exceed the limit it will definetely affect the health. so beware. good luck

I am suffering from colitis and mucus problem and my weight day to day decreasing. Please provide me the solution.

Dear Lybrate user: One of the most important factors for maintaining healthy functioning is to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural bodily rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing physiological imbalance at the basis of colitis. Avoid dairy products Squeeze garlic into foods as that helps in stimulating antibacterial action Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flaxseed oil are also helpful. Powdered psyllium in cold water followed by another glass of water will help to give stools more bulk. Revert back for Ayurved consultation.

You can enrich foods with real nut butters, whole fat milk, avocado, whole wheat bread, vegetable oils, nuts, potatoes, eat more often. Increasing the amount of calories you eat each day will help to gain weight. Focus on eating each meal containing a protein then do regular exercise for fitness.

I have to loose 18 kgs of weight for army SSB after two months. How can I make it possible. please suggest me methods to loose weight so less time. please help me. Food & Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Being a dietitian my views: there is no single diet chart for everyone. To plan a specific diet we do collect lot of information like height, weight, food frequency, digestive history, medical history, likes, dislike, lifestyle, eating habits. Remember one thing to follow a diet it should be personalized according to person's body type and not generalized. Starting with there is no pills or powder or shake which can help you to lose weight in a healthy way. To lose weight eat an hour within walking up and dinner at least 2 hours before you sleep. Avoiding eating anything after dinner. Breakfast should be your king size have good complex carbohydrates and protein rich. Eat every 2 hours small frequent meal do help in weight loss. And do not overeat. One can come to ideal body weight with few lifestyle modification. Have green tea only 2 cups a day. For exercise I would say diet plays 80 % role and exercise plays 20 % role in losing weight. Personal advise on gym. You should not make your body habituated with machines rather do simple walk or surya namaskar or planks. So only with healthy eating one can lose weight.

Hello lybrate-user, this kind of excess weight (119 kg) is breeding ground for many diseases (blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, certain kind of cancers, arthritis etc), which can affect the quality of your life ahead. It is possible that your skin condition is also due to underlying hormonal abnormality which is at root of your excess weight. It may be a good idea to consult a skin specialist as well as an endocrinologist. This is a lifestyle related issue and it can be surely treated with intensive lifestyle modification program. Most people who are fat are made to feel that it is because you lack will power, you are lethargic and a weak person. But that is definitely not true. It is your your hormones which have made you fat and keeping you fat. Unless we make correct diagnosis and and create a diet and lifestyle plan to correct that hormonal abnormalities you will not be able to lose weight for long term. Most diet fails because they are low calorie and low fat. Instead of correcting metabolism, they make you feel low energy or makes you feel excessively hungry. Calorie counting is useless. If you want to count, count nutritional value of food in terms of protein, fiber, good fat etc. I am sure you did not gain this much weight suddenly but over a period of time. To achieve weightloss - think long term. Weight loss achieved over short term, always comes back. Try this general approach (see below) for 4 weeks. If this works then continue. If you have tried this in past or if it does not work, then approach us for weightloss package of 6 months by lifestyle modification. 1. Do not eat anything sugary or sweet. Zero sweetness in diet. 2. Eat plenty of salad in lunch and dinner along with other foods. 3. Do not drink any liquid calorie like cola or fruit juices. 4. Brisk walks or jogging for 45 - 60 minutes every day. My best wishes.

Sprouts are the cheapest and most convenient source of complete nourishment

M/Sc Dietetics -Outstanding Grade-82%, Registration no-SRD-006/2014, Special Registered Dietician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Pune
Sprouts are the cheapest and most convenient source of complete nourishment. They are food for long-term health and wellness, they can prevent diseases and lifestyle-related ailments.
Sprouting a seed enables it to produce an enormously enhanced bundle of nutrients.

The nutritional changes that occur during sprouting primarily happen because complex compounds get broken down into simpler forms.
Metabolic activity in dormant seeds is initiated as soon as they are hydrated during soaking.

Sprouted seeds acquire natural increased digestibility and nutrients as compared to unsprouted seeds. They provide us with all the essential minerals and vitamins, and must ideally form a part of our daily diets.

Gaining weight is as difficult as losing it, if you are naturally thin. Skinny people complain that they can't put on any weight. If you want to build up weight, don't just eat high-calorie junk foods and rely on unnecessary supplements. Choose foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-dense whenever possible. Following are some tips to follow to increase your weight. You will take some time to gain the weight you need, but be patient.------------------ 1. If you have a rapid metabolism, then you must increase your daily intake of healthy foods (increase your intake of carbohydrates) to compensate for the rate at which you burn energy. Eat six smaller meals a day you should also eat more energy dense foods like healthy oils, dry fruits, seeds, nuts, pulses, etc. Along with some starchy foods like potatoes, cereals, bread, pasta, rice, etc.-------------- 2. Consume more calories than you burn. Choose healthy calorie-dense food to add calories. Drink healthy beverages to add calories. Mangoes are rich in calories and carbohydrates, include them in your diet.------------ 3. Eat healthy food frequently, 5-6 times a day - 3 larger meals and 3 smaller meals alternately. Separate them by at least 3 hours so you can digest each meal fully. Don't go without food for 5-6 hours after having a major meal. For example, if you wish to consume 3000 calories a day, you may eat 3 larger meals of about 650 calories and 3 smaller meals of about 450 calories.------------ 4. Have a balanced diet.--------- 5. Exercise regularly for putting on weight. Some thin people think that exercise is not good for them. This is not true, it keeps the metabolism high. Remember that eating alone is not sufficient. You don't want to gain fat but lean mass, so exercise is important. Resistance training exercises will help to increase your muscle mass, which in turn will increase metabolism. Learn to distinguish between weight gaining exercises and weight loss exercises. Note that if you do not get enough amino acids during exercise, the existing muscle may break down. Amino acids come from protein foods so you should eat such foods after exercise. Keep in mind that excessive exercise without putting back the energy you have used will not help you to put on weight.-------------
