Cholesterol - Cholesterol is a dense, fatty substance that found in every cell of your body. It circulates throughout your bloodstream in little bundles called lipoproteins, interior of its is composed of fat, while proteins forms the exterior walls.


 

Types of cholesterol -

1) Low density lipoproteins (ldl) - its considered as a bad cholesterol form, it enables cholesterol to create plaque that build up and harden on the walls of blood vessels.

2) High density lipoproteins (hdl) - it is the good cholesterol, because it helps to reduce ldl levels. Hdl helps to transport ldl cholesterol to your liver, which removes it from the body.

3) Triglycerides - another form of fat in your blood that can raise your risk for heart disease.

4) Very low density lipoproteins (vldl) - it is a type of blood fat. It's considered one of the bad forms of cholesterol, because this can clog your arteries and lead to a heart attack.


 

Causes / risk factors -

* cigarette smoking.

* food that contains highly saturated fat and cholesterol can raise your blood cholesterol levels.

* obesity.

* hereditary / genetic factors.

* lack of exercise / low physical activity.


 

Normal values of cholesterol in adults -

* total serum cholesterol - 130 - 250 mg/dl

* ldl - 60 - 160 mg/dl

* hdl - 30 -70 mg/dl or

* serum triglycerides - 0 - 170 mg/dl


 

Prevention and treatment of high cholesterol -

Lifestyle changes -

* exercise - do 30 - 45 minutes a day of moderate cardio. It will help s to lose weight and boosts your hdl levels.

* diet - eat more fibers, eat healthy fats i. E. Nuts, olive oil, avocado all have fats that won't increase your ldl, limit cholesterol intake, i. E. Reduce high saturated fat foods like cheese, whole milk, red meats. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, low fat or nonfat dairy products, fish, eat low salt diet.

* quit smoking, limit alcohol and caffeine consumption.

* do practice relaxation and breathing exercises.

* garlic - it helps to reduce high cholesterol. In the morning take a small piece of garlic and crush it and take with glass of water. The garlic contains allicin which helps to lower high blood pressure and prevents blood clotting.

* drink 8 - 10 glasses of water, per day.


 

Homeopathy treatment for high cholesterol - the goal of homeopathy is to lower high cholesterol to desired levels to prevent heart diseases.


 

1) Allium Sativum - for lowering high cholesterol + made from garlic, s so it helps in eliminating the excess cholesterol from the body by raising vitality of the patient + increased appetite, craving for meat + suffers from acidity symptoms.


 

2) Calcarea Carbonica - reduces high cholesterol in fat or overweight persons + excessive craving for boiled eggs + sensitiveness to cold air and continuous perspiration on scalp + palpitations also be complained at night or after having meals.

Usually SGPT is high in people who take alcohol. You can control it by reducing the alcohol content. Also, there are various allopathic drugs which increase the SGPT, you should also avoud that. As for your HDL, whole grains, beans, fatty fish, nuts, etc help in increasing it. You should also avoid sedentary life style and start exercising or atleast walk for 30 minutes. It will help in maintaining all these.

No advice will be given to you if you do not Stop smoking ganja! Sorry to say that but your problem(s) are related to this, the moment you stop , you will feel better. Get help from rehab facility if available in your town , otherwise build strong will power to give up on your own.

My dad suffering from shortness of breathing while talking and normal work. We have done many check up angiography ECG etc. All reports are fine. Now doctor told that he has allergy and treating Allegra and ecosprin. But I don't see much improvement. Should I wait or should go to other check ups?

If angiography & ECG are normal , get an Echo test to know % age of heart function. It looks like a case of allergy. You can change tablet , my experience tells me the new llergy tablets are not as effective as good old used for 50 years plus. Ask your chemist to give you Chlorpheniramine malleate tablet , you may find it difficult as it is used in combination with phenaramine given for Dry cough. Both tablets and syrups are available , ask for Solvin combos and get back here to tell all of us about a positive feed back.

thats good u stopped taking alcohal. stop smoking also u have habit. don't take oily spicy fatty food. reduce salt take don't take more than 5 grms salt in 24 hours. avoid stress. share urself with ur friends & family members. go for morning walk. do yoga daily. i think u should also for blood test lipid profile.& random blood sugar

Hello dear High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation,yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods,oily foods,junk foods,alcohol,smoking,fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress,take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Ecosprin gold-10 at night daily.

I am 76 years old. 5years ago pta stent has placed in blood vein to the heart and I am taking ranozex 5oo; cardio plus, and pinomh20 after breakfast, deplatt cv after lunch and after dinner one tablet ranozex 500 though I am comfortable, should I perform angiogram once more to ascertain whether the stent is in right position and whether there is any blockages elsewhere etc. Plesae advice.

You should consult your doctor first. I can advise you to take a very good homoeopathic medicine along with. I am sure that this will surely help you in due courses of time diacard ( madaaus lab germany ) 10 drops in 20 ml fresh water twice daily. Report after 2 years.

What is her temprature? if it is about 100. Ie low grade just paracetamol 500mg 3 -4 times /day. With hot liquids/water and hot fomentation is sufficient. If fever is more than 3 days duration/high grade>101 f. Than antibiotic and antialegic will b required for 5 days.

Hello, CHEST PAIN in your case may be due to 1.acidity. 2. severe anxiety 3. muscular problem A. You can take Tablet Pantocid 40 mg (if no drug allergy) one tablet before food for 3 days B. When we are diagnosed with high cholesterol levels, we straight away start popping pills. Having high cholesterol levels does not mean we are ill, it means that we are not eating right.

By changing our dietary habits and staying away from processed and fat rich food, we can keep our cholesterol levels in check. Here are some indian foods that help in lowering the cholesterol levels:

Methi

Methi seeds are rich in a compound called saponins that reduce cholesterol absorption from food. They also help in lowering the production of cholesterol in the body

How to use:

Roast methi seeds till they turn brown. Make a powder from the roasted seeds. And add one spoon of powder to a glass of to warm water and have it daily

Garlic

Garlic, contains allicin which helps lower total cholesterol, bad cholesterol and triglycerides. It also prevents fat deposition within blood vessels.

How to use:

Crush 2- 3 garlic cloves and add them to a glass of water. Take it empty stomach every morning.

Onion

Onions are rich sources of antioxidants. They also help reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol levels in the body.

How to use

Add sliced onion to your daily salads regularly

Walnuts

Walnuts are rich sources of mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids and help in reducing cholesterol levels. They also help in keeping blood vessels healthy

How to use

Take a handful of walnuts (40g) daily. You can add them to breakfast cereals, fruit salads or take them as a snack. Make sure the walnuts are not salted or sugar coated.

Flax seeds

Flax seeds also called linseed or alsi are packed with omega 3 fatty acids. They are rich in fiber that binds to cholesterol and decreases its absorption from foods. Flax seeds also help in increasing good cholesterol levels.

How to use:

Grind the seeds into a fine powder. Add one teaspoon of this powder to water and have it first thing in the morning daily. You can also sprinkle a spoonful of flax seeds to breakfast cereals, chutnies or salads.

Dear Lybrateuser, -Your father should not strain, do regular exercise like walking for 10-20 min, do yoga & deep breathing for keeping mind & body fit -get his bp checked up also blood sugar, cholesterol, ecg, x-ray chest to rule out any other problem if not done earlier -should have a well balanced diet, sleep well & keep himself busy in some activity during the day -consult a doctor if symptoms do not improve & appear repeatedly.

Even if you have years of unhealthy eating under your belt, making a few changes in your diet can reduce cholesterol and improve your heart health. Choose healthier fats. Saturated fats, found primarily in red meat and dairy products, raise your total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol. As a rule, you should get less than 7 percent of your daily calories from saturated fat. Choose leaner cuts of meat, low-fat dairy and monounsaturated fats — found in olive and canola oils — for healthier options. Eliminate trans fats. Trans fats affect cholesterol levels by increasing the "bad" cholesterol and lowering the "good" cholesterol. This bad combination increases the risk of heart attacks. Trans fats can be found in fried foods and many commercial products, such as cookies, crackers and snack cakes. But don't rely on packages that are labeled "trans fat-free." In the United States, if a food contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat in a serving, it can be labeled "trans fat-free." Even small amounts of trans fat can add up if you eat foods that contain small amounts of trans fat. Read the ingredient list, and avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oils. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids don't affect LDL cholesterol. They have other heart benefits, such as helping to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol, reducing your triglycerides, a type of fat in your blood, and reducing blood pressure. Some types of fish — such as salmon, mackerel and herring — are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Other good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include walnuts, almonds and ground flaxseeds. Increase soluble fiber. There are two types of fiber — soluble and insoluble. Both have heart-health benefits, but soluble fiber also helps lower your LDL levels. You can add soluble fiber to your diet by eating oats and oat bran, fruits, beans, lentils, and vegetables. Add whey protein. Whey protein is one of two proteins in dairy products — the other is casein. Whey protein may account for many of the health benefits attributed to dairy. Studies have shown that whey protein given as a supplement lowers both LDL and total cholesterol. You can find whey protein powders in health food stores and some grocery stores. Follow the package directions for how to use them.

Hi, I just got to know my ldl is 152 and overall cholesterol is 209. I have started exercising past one month. Do I need to take medication or lifestyle changes and avoiding red meat and fatty food will lower it down. The level was 219 exactly one month back it has lowered but I want it optimum. Physical activity will help to reduce the cholesterol. Try not to eat fried foods, change the oil if in case your oil has too much cholesterol ingredients, take fresh juices, fruits, and eat more antioxidants.

Hi - incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet while eliminating unhealthy foods. - if you are working or studying away from home, try to pack healthy lunch and snacks for yourself to avoid eating unhealthy food daily. - don't eat straight from the packet - use a plate or bowl to control how much you eat. - don't delay or skip meals. - cut down your consumption of aerated drinks and sodas. - drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. Drink water after waking up and before sleeping. Being dehydrated may make you feel like you're hungry, so it is important to stay hydrated. - have homemade fruit and vegetable juices - eat 5-6 small healthy meals every 2-3 hours, every day, instead of having a few big ones. This regulates your blood sugar level and your metabolism. - don't skip breakfast, instead, make it rich with complex carbohydrates and proteins, so it can provide you with energy to get through the day.
