I am 29 years old, got a distracted listening problem with pus from both the ears. I already had a cochlear bone implant on left ear to reduce the pus and improve in listening. But the problem is same as before. Please suggest. I do not wish to prefer any operation at this busy schedules and responsibility.

What I understand from your problem is. You must having what we call as csom in both the ears. What I don't understand is the reason for cochlear implant. Please do consult an ent specialist.

General Physician,
You have frontal and maxillary sinusitis may be associated with nasal septum deviation. Have regular warm saline gargle three times daily. Have homemade freshly prepared lemon juice which is rich in vitamin c thereby increasing your body autoimmune system which prevents infection. And maintain oral and nasals hygiene.

There is a need to examine your throat. If there is follicular tonsillitis or severe pharyngitis and some other antibiotic may need to be started. Till then do hot saline gargles and consult further.

Hi your symptoms look most likely to be common cold. I will advise you to follow some home remedies like warm water gargles (you may add tea leaves or listerine to it), steam inhalation and avoid cold water. In medical practice we say that common cold resolves in 7 days if untreated and within a week if treated with medication! but if you do not feel better after 7-10 days and have fever or difficulty breathing, you should consult a doctor immediately. I hope this helps.

I am a 24 year old male. I have a snoring problem. I snore each time I fall asleep. I also used an app to check my snoring and it showed me that I snore about 75%-80% of the time I fall asleep. I smoke but I don't drink.

MBBS, MS - ENT
ENT Specialist, Chennai
Rightly advised: 1) seek ent consultation to rule out any local pathology 2) get polysomnogram done to rule out sleep apnoea - whether central or peripheral 3) try to reduce your weight 4) most important: - quit smoking - to prevent further damage to your burnt upper respiratory tract.

What are the generally available treatment to reduce snoring and please mention the medicines if any?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in thenose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

No speaking at all over the next 36 hours Use sign language, written words. Steam inhalation  3 /4 times a day through mouth. Be careful while taking Steam. Antibiotic will also be needed . Paracetamol will help reduce pain. Have soft warm food. Is there any pain in throat any cold? Then you may also need antibiotics  Take a multivitamin tablet for a few days. Chicken soup if you are non vegetarian can be included in your meals. Fruits and veggies are a must  too. Al this together can help. But the first two are most important.

Ear discharge - 5 Ways to Manage it at Home!

Ear discharge - 5 Ways to Manage it at Home!

Ear discharge may occur due to several reasons. Injury or trauma to the ear canal, a ruptured ear drum or an infection in the middle ear may be the most common causes of ear discharge. Eczema, swimmer’s ear and other skin irritations may also lead to this problem. While there are some simple home remedies to treat this disorder, always consult an ENT specialist if the discharge does not stop after the application of those treatments. Let us look at some common ways to treat this disorder.

  1. Use gravity: While this method does not treat ear discharge per se, it does help in draining the fluid build-up in the ear. Just lie down on your side keeping the affected ear parallel to the ground. Use your finger to create a vacuum inside your ear and drain the fluid inside it. The finger must be clean. You can also use a cotton wad for this purpose. Another way could be by simply lying on your side with a towel under your ear.
  2. Use a warm compress: This treatment promotes the flow of ear discharge to its outer part, thereby alleviating the pain. Dip a clean piece of cloth in warm water, wring the cloth as much as you can and then place it around your ear for 2-5 minutes. Lie down on your side.
  3. Inhale steam: Inhaling steam, opens up the Eustachian tube, thereby promoting the flow of the trapped ear discharge. Simply mix a little bit of eucalyptus oil with some water, boil the mixture and inhale the steam. Tilt your head to one side so that the fluid drains out. Do this exercise for 5-10 minutes. Cover your head and the water with a towel to prevent the steam from escaping. Repeat this exercise as needed.
  4. Use vinegar and rubbing alcohol mixture: Vinegar and rubbing alcohol have excellent anti-microbial properties. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Put some drops of the mixture in a dropper. Lie down on your side with the infected ear upwards. Insert some drops of the solution with the dropper in your ear. Wait for 10 minutes and then drain out the ear discharge by tilting the infected ear to the other side. Repeat this exercise twice a day for better results.
  5. Use garlic oil: Crush 2-3 garlic cloves and extract its oil. Use a dropper to put 2-3 drops of this extract into your affected ear. Tilt the head to one side so that the juice settles down. Now hold a dryer next to the infected ear and let the warm air blow inside it. Repeat this exercise twice a day for better results.
