I get chest pains and cough many times and I do smoke and I am not able to quit smoking. Please tell.
Dear Lybrate user, smoking is a choice and all choices are made by us. You can quit smoking only if you tell yourself that you can do it. Not when you accept in your mind that "you are not able to quit". You must have taken many challenges in your life - I am sure you don't want to be called a loser at this as well. You have detailed about having cough and chest pains- Its possible that you may develop infection like tuberculosis or later if you don't quit - the risk of lung cancer is also very high. Make the right choice- quit today.

5 Tips From a Top Cardiologist To Help Keep You Away From Heart Problems

5 Tips From a Top Cardiologist To Help Keep You Away From Heart Problems
Cardiac ailments are extremely common these days and surprisingly, 90 percent of these are completely preventable. Utter neglect, inadequate awareness and an unhealthy lifestyle are the major reasons which lead to the development of various problems of the heart such as heart attacks, stroke, inflammatory heart disease, hypertensive heart disease etc. Here are some top tips to keep your heart healthy and keep all cardiac diseases at bay:

1) Keep your weight in check - Obese/overweight people are at a considerably higher risk of attacks/stroke in comparison to people with a healthy body weight. Try and maintain the correct height-health ratio at all times by including a healthy diet and regular exercise in your daily routine. Also, get a weight check every six months.

2) Kick your smoking habit - People who are regular smokers are most likely to be affected by coronary heart disease. Keep a tab on your smoking habit and if possible, leave it completely. If you are above the age of 45 and are a heavy smoker, you should immediately kick the butt.

3) Bring down salt consumption - According to scientists, a food product is said to have an unhealthy salt content if it contains more than 1.5 gm salt per 100gm. High intake of salt contributes to an unstable blood pressure and thus you should try and avoid processed foods that have a high salt content. Also, try and use minimum salt when you cook food at home.

4) Avoid saturated fat - Excessive consumption of saturated fat is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases. Make little but effective changes in your daily diet and substitute saturated fats with their healthier counterparts. Avoid fried food products, full-fat milk and red meat.

5) Minimize your alcohol consumption - Everyone knows that red wine is good for the heart, but everything in excess is harmful. Moreover, other alcoholic variants such as beer will actually add to your body weight and make you vulnerable to a number of heart problems. Try and limit your alcohol consumption to one drink a day.

Your heart is your lifeline. Take good care of it. If you fave any further questions on heartcare, click on consult privately to ask me.

Sinus tachycardia (also colloquially known as sinus tach or sinus tachy) is a sinus rhythm with an elevated rate of impulses, defined as a rate greater than 100 beats/min (bpm) in an average adult. The normal resting heart rate in the average male adult ranges from 60–100 bpm and women 60-90bpm. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance.

Dear Lybrateuser, - High BP could be essential hypertension (where is is no specific problem in the body but bp remains high, maximum cases come under this category, secondary hyper tension can be due to any cardiac defect or due to secretion if a hormone from a tumour in kidney area - get investigations done, blood CBC, cholesterol, sugar, x- ray chest, ECG, echo, consult a physician as medication may be required if bp remains high - in the meantime he should follow some precautions, - restrict salt intake, fried & junk foods, also namkeens, pickles, papads as they have a high salt content - have more of fruits, vegetables, whole grains instead of refined ones, low fat dairy & dairy products, proteins & healthy fats as in olive, canola & sunflower oil, walnuts, almonds, avocados & seafoods - do regular exercise like brisk walking, jogging, yoga, meditation & deep breathing to destress which helps reduce the BP, also should sleep well for 7-8 hrs at night which calms the mind & lowers BP - monitor BP regularly preferably at the same time of the day & try to reduce weight (if more) by diet & exercise.

Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to cardiovascular disease. What you eat has a direct impact on your cholesterol level. In fact, a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol-lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. Working with a registered dietitian and doctor is the key to develop and maintain a successful health program to manage it. I will inform you on how to make diet, lifestyle changes, make you understand instructions for taking medication because it won't work if you don't take it as directed. Consult privately for a holistic dietary therapy to solve your problems.

Hi lybrate user. Chest pain can be due to gas or acidity also. Give her sauf (fennel) and water boiled together. Give her light food. Note for any other symptoms. If it still persists or becomes severe then consult a doctor. Take care.

Good to know that your kidneys are normal in size and shape & ecg report is also normal. Remember, there is a difference between picture of an organ and its functioning, kidneys'appear' to be normal but are not functioning properly as blood urea & creatinine are very high. Kidneys are like a filter of body that retains the useful products like proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins & minerals. Urea and creatinine are by products of metabolism and are excreted in some amounts, but if filter called kidneys, start to fail, the levels of urea and creatinine start rising in blood and this is an indication of kidney failure. You may need blood dialysis/ abdominal dialysis depending upon various factors, as decided by your treating doctor, so that chronic kidney disease does not become worse. Do consult a renal specialist without delay & remember ckd (chronic kidney disease) can have an effect on an otherwise healthy heart.

Dear lybrate-user, cholesterol medicine is given to patients who have moderate to high risk of developing heart problem. Risk is calculated from age, sex, history of diabetes, high bp, smoking, family history etc. Otherwise unless cholesterol value is very high no cholesterol medicine is required. Only diet and exercise will be enough. As regards diet she can take almost all home cooked foods. Avoid oily and high carb foods.
