Composite Fillings - Things You Must be Aware of

BDS, FICOI, MDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Composite Fillings - Things You Must be Aware of

Tooth decay is treated removing the damaged portion of your tooth and substituting it with ‘fillings’. Fillings can be made up of different materials such as silver amalgam, porcelain, gold or even plastic. Hence these plastic, tooth-colored, glass mixtures that are used to restore decayed teeth are known as composite fillings. Composites are also used for changing the color of or reshaping disfigured teeth.

How are they placed?
The dentist sets the composite in layers employing a specialized UV Laser light to harden each of the layers. After this, the dentist moulds the composite to fit in your tooth. The composite is then polished to prevent premature staining or wearing out of the composite. Good shaping and polishing of the tooth to produces a virtually invisible restoration.

When are composite fillings used?
White fillings can be used for cosmetic options as well.

Esthetic dentistry

  1. Short or spaced out teeth: Composites are able to reshape any deformed teeth or add length to a tooth.
  2. Cracked or chipped teeth: It can fill in any chips or worn down teeth to appear healthy yet again.
  3. Smile Makeover: It does not require for healthy tooth structure to be removed unlike a veneer

Preventive dentistry: The molars in the back have deep groves on the sides that food particles can get trapped in causing infection. The composite can be filled in those areas as a preventative.

Advantages of Composites:

  1. The shade of the composite filling is well suited to match the color of your existing teeth.
  2. They can chemically bond to your tooth structure, rendering additional support.
  3. Composite fillings are also used to mend broken or cracked teeth.
  4. With composite filling, not much of your tooth structure needs to be taken off as compared to amalgam fillings.

Precautions with Tooth coloured fillings

  1. Composite fillings wear faster as compared to silver fillings should be replaced within 3-7 years.
  2. Need regular follow up care or maintenance as they are subject to microleakage.

    If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

Since I have adopted a cap on my one of the inner teeth a foul smell usually comes. What shall I do to remove it.
• Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. • Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. • Reduce your alcohol consumption. • Stop smoking. • Cut down on coffee. • Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. • Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. • Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. • Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment.

Fluoride Treatments - "Extra Protection for Your Teeth"

Fluoride Treatments - "Extra Protection for Your Teeth"

Dental caries (tooth decay) is caused by acid-producing bacteria that collect around the teeth and gingivae (gums) in a sticky, clear film called “plaque.” Without good daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits, teeth become more vulnerable to caries. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between teeth with floss or another type of interdental cleaner help remove plaque. Regular dental examinations and cleanings also are important for keeping teeth healthy.

Another key to good oral health is fluoride, a mineral that helps prevent caries and can repair teeth in the very early, microscopic stages of the disease.

Fluoride can be obtained in two forms: topical and systemic.

TOPICAL AND SYSTEMIC FLUORIDES

Topical fluorides are applied directly to the tooth enamel. Some examples include fluoride toothpastes and mouthrinses, as well as fluoride treatments in the dental clinic.

Systemic fluorides are those that are swallowed. Examples include fluoridated water and dietary fluoride supplements. The maximum reduction in dental caries is achieved when fluoride is available both topically and systemically.

Dentists have used in-office fluoride treatments for decades to help protect the oral health of children and adults, especially patients who may be at a higher risk of developing caries. Some factors that may increase a person’s risk of developing caries include the following:

  • poor oral hygiene;
  • active caries;
  • eating disorders;
  • drug or alcohol abuse;
  • lack of regular professional dental care;
  • active orthodontic treatment combined with poor oral hygiene;
  • high levels of caries-causing bacteria in the mouth;
  • exposed root surfaces of teeth;
  • decreased salivary flow, resulting in dry mouth;
  • poor diet; dexisting restorations (fillings); tooth enamel defects;

undergoing head and neck radiation therapy.

PROFESSIONAL FLUORIDE TREATMENT

If you, or a family member, are at a moderate-to high risk of developing caries, a professional fluoride treatment can help. The fluoride preparation used in the "Smile Up Dental Care & Implant Center " dental clinic is a much stronger concentration than that in toothpastes or fluoride mouthrinses that may be available in a store or at a pharmacy.

Professional fluoride treatments generally take just a few minutes. The fluoride may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam or varnish. Typically, it is applied with a cotton swab or brush, or it is used as a rinse or placed in a tray that is held in the mouth for several minutes.

After the treatment, you may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair microscopic carious areas.

Depending on your oral health status, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six or 12 months. Your dentist also may recommend additional preventive measures if you are at a moderate or high risk of developing caries. These measures may include over-the-counter or prescription therapeutic products such as fluoride mouthrinses, gels or antibacterial mouthrinses.

I got mouth ulcers whenever I eat meat, chicken, eggs, brinjal etc from last 15 years.
Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need Coronoplasty (smoothen teeth edges) along with Multivitamin cap, for five days in the morning after meals & antiseptic ointment or gel on the area of ulcer until then. Mouth sores are common and rarely cause complications.

Sir, you need to contact dentist and undergo for scaling (deep cleaning) of the teeth. Then you need to gargle yours mouth daily twice with mouthwash only after you undergo scaling. Mouthwash you need to do after breakfast as well as after dinner and should not brush or eat food after using mouthwash atleast for one hour.

I'm having bad breath inspite of brushing my teeth regularly & using the mouthwash. What should I do?
Bad breath from the mouth can be of various reasons. Like accumulation of plaque and tartar, decay in teeth, dry mouth, smoking and tobacco chewing, consumption of caffeinated beverages and alcoholic drinks, sore throat, bad digestion. For beginning, go for scaling and polishing of teeth. Use a mouthwash after brushing twice daily. Increase intake of water. Clean your tongue twice daily with a tongue cleaner.
