Tips for Proper Brushing

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Ernakulam
Tips for Proper Brushing

Some easy steps to do to help your teeth keep clean:

  1. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line.
  2. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles.
  3. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth using a back-and-forth, up-and-down motion, making sure to be done gently in order to avoid bleeding.
  4. To clean the inside surfaces of the teeth and gums, place the bristles at a 45-degree angle again and repeat the back-and-forth, up-and-down motion.
  5. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria which might cause badbreath.

Try to brush at least twice a day to prevent acid buildup from the breakdown of food by bacteria. However, if your work or activities prevent you from doing this, thoroughly rinse your mouth with  water after eating to minimize the amount of food that would serve as substrate for the bacteria.

From last 12 years by playing cricket, I have one teeth half broken and almost it is dead I mean it completely became black color but I am not having any kind of pain. I want to replace this with a new one with permanent fixed way, I don't want to remove and fix every day, week or month. Kindly suggest me what I need to do for good treatment and also what it will be for this treatment. Thank you,

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana

Drink tea to improve your dental health
Drinking a cup of tea everyday helps in keeping the gums and teeth healthy as it contains high amounts of fluoride and flavonoids which prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to the teeth.

I have a dry mouth condition (less saliva secretion). I drink lot of water daily but still if I go outside for 3-4 hours at a stretch without drinking water then my lips start cracking. Difficulty in speaking, what should I do?

MDS - Oral Medicine and Radiology, BDS
Dentist, Ahmedabad
Hi, there are many conditions causing dry mouth. Some of the main causes are some medicines, salivary gland disease, dehydration, diabetes, etc. We need to do a complete checkup. Meanwhile, continue drinking water frequently and start taking limcee lozenges 4 to 5 times a day. I would advice you to consult oral medicine specialist for complete diagnosis and treatment. Regards.

For tooth cavity the immediate treatment is to get it fillled as soon as possible. If its paining then it has reached pulp n got it infected. Possible treatrment is root canal treatment along with capping. So go to a dentist and get it done fast. Take care.

Who should be treating you with braces?

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Jamshedpur
Who should be treating you with braces?
Although dentistry has seen tremendous developments in treatment techniques and materials in the last few decades, public awareness exercises have somehow not been able to keep pace with its rise. As a result most people today will be surprised if they are told that dentistry has nine different specialties.

Orthodontics happens to be the first specialty in dentistry. It deals with prevention, interception & correction of malocclusion (improper bite). Common problems like spacing between teeth, crowding of teeth due to lack of space, protrusion of teeth, un-aesthetic smile etc. Can be easily corrected by timely orthodontic intervention.

A malocclusion can result either due to abnormal position of the teeth or lack of harmony between upper & lower jaws. The best person to treat problems of such nature is an orthodontist. An orthodontist undergoes three years of rigorous training during his postgraduate program wherein he treats hundreds of patients having malocclusion of varying severity. After successful completion of the course he is awarded with the degree of mds orthodontics.

However as a consequence of lack of awareness, a lot of patients still do not seek the advice of an orthodontist for their problem. As a result such patient do not get the desired treatment outcome which predisposes their dentition for relapse after treatment. In addition such patients may also experience harmful effects on their occlusion (chewing efficiency) and may develop tmj (temporomandibular joint) related disorders in the long run. It is recommended that an orthodontic specialist be consulted before undergoing treatment of such nature.

How to strengthen gums at the age 78 years in order to go for permanent teeth implant.

To place dental implants, adequate bone height is required along with good healthy gums. Bone height can be surgically increased using bone grafts. Visit an implantologist for a detailed evaluation who ll further guide you hw to manage your gums prior implant surgery. Meanwhile get scalling done by dentist. Use proper brushing techniques. Brush, floss n use mouthwash twice daily. Massage your gums with your finger tips after brushing. Keep your tongue clean. Rinse your mouth well after each meal.

Munching foods like apples, pears, carrots or celery after brushing can help in preventing discoloration as they trigger tooth-bathing saliva which helps in keeping the teeth whiter.

I have got black spots on my teeth. What it would be? How can I remove it naturally? Some are gone already but some are there still.

BDS (GOLD MEDALIST)
Dentist, Jamshedpur
Most probably these black spots may be start of tooth decay or cavity. Go for proper investigation to rule out wether it is drcay or any kind of deposition or discolouration. If cavity then get it filled as early as possible.

Believe dental implants are often more economical than bridges. They are more conservative, have a high success rate, preserve bone and don't decay. In my experience, patients choose bridges over implants not because a successful implant isn't possible, but only because of higher up front cost. Implants are not only the standard of care, but a better value as well.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
Certainly yes. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need replacement with removable or fixed (bridges & implants) type of teeth. Implant fixation depends on the density, length & width of the bone. Cost varies with dentist. You may consult me in person. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.
