My mother is 45-46 years old. Her ankle swells most of the times and she feels pain for the same. Sometimes after taking medicines it goes away. But again it comes back. She has been suffering from this pain since many years. Her elbow joints on both the hands are also suffering from same kind of issues. Please suggest is there any kind of exercises she should do to avoid such pains / issues as she and we have lost faith on medicines and all. And also please let us know, should she avoid any such diets or foods which might be triggering such issues /pains in her body.

Hi initially, tell her to rest 1) apply cold pack or ice pack for 20 min. At every 2 hrs. 2) keep her ankle elevated by placing pillow under ankle. 3) wrap elastic bandage around ankle which you can learn from physiotherapist. Also ultrasound therapy will be good for her. And for elbow you have not given enough information do reply back for private consultation and detailed treatment plan.

Here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -Apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --While sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -Find a mattress with back support. A good mattress should provide support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. Medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses. -Do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -Avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -Good posture plays a key role in your spine health, helping to prevent additional back and neck pain and even injuries to spinal structures. Try to be aware of your posture and make good posture part of your normal routine. -head up, shoulders back, rear tucked under -Stand and walk with correct posture -Sit with support -Lift and carry carefully -And finally, keep moving:-Maintaining a static position for too long—more than twenty or thirty minutes at a time—is hard on the back. Prolonged static posture can slowly deplete elasticity from the tissues. By simply moving—be it a change of position, a stretch, or a short walk—the tissue elasticity needed to protect your joints can be restored and the associated discomfort reduced. -Stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -Some Physiotherapy treatment like IFT current can give you relief. -Consult a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your back pain. Best wishes.

Hello hip, knee, ankle jts are weight bearing joints of body. Less physical activity or sedentary lifestyle, obesity, age related factors. Overweight causes weight bearing joints prone to overstressed and limited or restricted movements. You must start knee joint exercises first follow by few mins walk on smooth surface. Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. It is natural to have some degenerative changes in your lower back region seeing your age. But if you do not have any other symptoms like leg pains, numbness, weakness in legs, paresthesias ( electrical shock like sensations) and your pain is only localized to your back region, then I would think the best way to move ahead is with good and intensive physical therapy under supervision. Also kindly tell me how much distance can you walk without pain? do you take pain killers for walking? also take regular calcium medications and vitamin d as required to keep your bone metabolism intact. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Massage with your thumbs from the mid points of the shoulder blades on both sides towards the lower back of your head up to lower level of the ears. Use oil or water for massage. Rotate your head clockwise and anticlockwise, forward and down, left and right a few times. Do for 5 to 10 times morning and evening. Give pressure the dipping point on the portion between the thumb and the index finger on the back of the palm. Press and release for 15 times where the pain is more. This will solve the problem. Further do some wrist rotation exercise. Consult after 5 days. For further guidance and treatment.

I have a back pain I am only 17 years old plzz consult me some medicines or treat ment.

I have a back pain I am only 17 years old plzz consult me some medicines or treat ment.
Back pain may be due to strain, sprain, weather change etc. *Avoid bending forward while working on lap top or for any other work. *Don’t sit continuously working on laptop etc. Get up periodically and move around. *Restrict bike driving as far as possible. *Don’t carry laptop or any load on your shoulder. Carrying very light loads equally with both hands is better *Sit straight so that back bone gets proper support. A dining chair is better than a laid back sofa. *You can use mustard oil for massage which is good in winter season for relieving pain. Eucalyptus oil is also good *Soft bed will not give proper support to your back bone. Hard bed with thin mattress and thin pillow is better. *Get yourself tested whether you have spondylitis problem. Homoeopathy has a good treatment for this without adverse effects. Take Calc fluor 200--once daily in the morning.

Orthopedist,
Hai, I am having knee pain while playing shuttle, any suggestions?
Hi Thanks for your query and Welcome to Lybrate. I am Dr Akshay from Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. Your knee pain could be due to certain reasons but common ones are Chondromalacia, pain due to knee instability, inflammation etc. If there is no history of any injury, and no s/s of inflammation or infection like swelling, skin redness or Local warmth on touching, then i will like to advise you for conservative management initially in form of : - Intensive physical therapy with focus on strengthening of Quadriceps and stretching of other group of muscles - Gentle anti inflammatory medications like Tab Etoshine or Tab Paracetamol can be taken in small doses for 5-7 days - Adequate calcium and vitamin D supplementation as per requirement - Ice packs at home for 3-4 times in a day and see how it goes for around 2 weeks time. If your condition does not improve, then we will have to get certain investigations done. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation. Thanks & Regards Dr Akshay Kumar Saxena Consultant Orthopaedics Fortis Hospital, New Delhi
